The Grove Gazette
September Newsletter
Walnut Grove Families,
As we embark on the 2024-2025 school year, I am delighted to share that it has been a fantastic start! With a few weeks under our belt, it feels like we are truly in the groove, and everything is running smoothly. I am excited about what this year holds for us and genuinely believe that this will be Walnut Grove’s best year yet.
I want to extend my heartfelt thanks for your continued involvement and support. Your engagement is crucial in helping Walnut Grove be the best school it can be. It was wonderful to see so many parents participate in our recent Curriculum Night. Your feedback was invaluable, and the level of involvement from parents was fantastic. It helps us stay aligned and communicate more effectively, ultimately benefiting our students.
Looking ahead, please mark your calendars for our annual PTA-sponsored EagleFest on Friday, October 18th, starting at 5:30 PM. Our PTA has been working diligently to make this a memorable event for both the school and the community. We have many exciting activities planned, and we hope to see you there. More details will be shared as the date approaches.
Additionally, please remember that September 20th will be our first digital learning day of the year. Students will participate in asynchronous lessons, and I encourage you to reach out to your child’s teacher if you have any questions about the work or expectations for the day. You can find their contact information here.
Finally, parent conferences will be taking place on October 23rd and 24th. We will provide more information and registration instructions soon, so please stay tuned.
Thank you once again for your support and involvement. I look forward to seeing you throughout the school year and at our upcoming events!
Sincerely,
Dr. Dale Pugh

Early Learning Spotlight 🔦
LLA September 25 Session
Our first Little Learners Academy will be a field trip! McDaniel Farm Park is hosting a Fun at the Farm day from 9:00am-2:00pm, with the Gwinnett Building Babies' Brains outreach program. See flyer for more information. Please complete the survey if you are interest in attending and meeting up for a "play date."
**This is for families with children ages 0-5 that are either already in Play2Learn, wish to be in Play2Learn, or who are not able to commit weekly to the Play2Learn program, but would love to explore early learning development and meet families with children of similar ages for friendship and support once a month. It does not require to be enrolled at WGES.
Ms. Lundon Soper the lead for Play2Learn will be at the park from 10-11.
Yearbook 📗
The Walnut Grove Elementary School yearbook order is open. There is no guarantee that there will be extra yearbooks to purchase later. Secure your yearbook by ordering one today!
ParentSquare
We are excited to continue the use of ParentSquare for another year! ParentSquare is designed to keep parents and guardians informed.
ParentSquare provides a safe way for district administrators, school principals, teachers, staff, and parents to receive and send information, such as:
- Weather-related closings & delays
- School and class information
- Upcoming class activities
- Transportation Delays
School Visitation
During school hours, the entrance for visitors is restricted to designated doors near the office, which are locked until the visitor is granted access. To notify school staff of their arrival, visitors push the bell button on the visitor management panel found outside the main entrance door.
Once “buzzed in,” at that time, adult visitors entering the building for the first time this year will go through the check-in process. Office personnel will check a visitor’s driver’s license or other state-issued ID, comparing information to a national sex offender database, alerting school administrators if a match is found, or issuing a detailed visitor badge if the person is cleared.
Upon entering the waiting area, visitors will be asked to present an ID such as a Driver’s License, which can either be scanned or manually entered into the system. If a parent or guardian does not have a US government-issued ID, the school staff member can use any form of identification and manually enter the person’s name into the system.
Please allow additional time for this safety process when visiting or checking your student out of school.
Healthy Meal Information 🍉🍑🍇
Dear Parent/Guardian:
Children need healthy meals to learn. Gwinnett County Public Schools offers healthy meals every school day. Breakfast costs $1.75; lunch costs $2.50 for elementary and $2.75 at middle and high schools. Your children may qualify for free meals or for reduced-price meals. The reduced price is $.30 for breakfast and $.40 for lunch. This packet includes an application for free or reduced-price meal benefits and a set of detailed instructions. Below are some common questions and answers to help you with the application process.
Attendance
September is Attendance Awareness Month. According to the Georgia Department of Education, “data indicates that missing more than five days of school each year, regardless of the cause, begins to impact student academic performance and starts shaping attitudes about school.” Please reach out to your student’s teacher if your child is struggling with health, social or emotional issues impacting their attendance and academics.
