Weekly News, Updates, & Opportunities from SRMS
A Message from Dr. Ortiz, Principal of Sandy Run
Good afternoon, Sandy Run Families,
It is hard to believe that March is upon us, but the sunnier days and warmer weather is much appreciated. This week at Sandy Run, we have recognized students in several ways (see below), continued to expand our academic skills in class, and had lots of exciting opportunities. We also were fortunate to engage in several important topics and conversations: students across Sandy Run and Upper Dublin High School completed the Belonging Survey to help guide strategies for the schools to best support our students. We are also grateful to the Upper Dublin Education Foundation for supporting a very important and powerful assembly on Social Media Safety - a topic that is continually present in our society. Sandy Run also practiced one of our safety and security drills as well. These events serve as a good reminder that while we continue to make growth in the classroom, we also are proud of the work our students are doing as members of the greater school community and taking care of each other. A major highlight of the week is the annual 7th and 8th grade musical, Matilda, Jr. which will be performed 3/1 - 3/3 (see below) - we hope to see many of you there!
Please see the updates below for some important, new information, and I hope that you and your families enjoy the weekend.
Sincerely,
Dan Ortiz
Mr. Doan's Annual Car Race
One of the highlights each year in Mr. Doan's technology education class is the team design and creation of a car, then testing it's speed. In this picture, the class winner for speed gets to test their car against Mr. Doan. In a close race, Mr. Doan edged out the students for another victory!
SRMS Student of the Month
Our value of the month of February was Leadership. These students' teachers, counselors, and peers voted them the SRMS students of the month for their consistent display of leadership day in and day out. We are very proud of all of our students' success - not only in the classroom, but as young citizens in our school community.
6th Grade Gold Team
The sixth grade Gold team recognized the strong work of a number of students across the four core content areas. These team-based recognitions and celebrations occur throughout the school and we are grateful for our staff for putting them together. Congrats to all of the students who have shined this month!
7th & 8th Grade Musical is this Weekend!!
Matilda The Musical is a multi-award-winning musical from the Royal Shakespeare Company, inspired by the beloved book by the incomparable Roald Dahl. Matilda the Musical is an inspirational musical tale of an extraordinary girl who discovers her superpower and summons the remarkable courage, against all odds, to help others change their stories, whilst also taking charge of her own destiny. Standing up for what's right, she's met with miraculous results.

Free Tutoring from UD Students
This tutoring group called SSOS (Students Supporting Other Students) offers free tutoring to elementary and middle schoolers by qualified high school students. The tutoring takes place at Upper Dublin Public Library at a convenient time for both student and tutor. We took over this group because we understand how expensive tutoring is to parents, and how easy it is for some students to fall behind without extra help.
The QR code brings you to the Google form for the parents to fill out but here is the link as well https://forms.gle/4XmhZeGN9ZibyJwh9

PJAS
This past Saturday, February 24, 2024, 4 of our young Sandy Run STEM researchers presented their research findings at Souderton Area High School for the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science Regional Competition (PJAS).
The competition hosted over 275 students from Montgomery County area high schools and middle schools. Each of these students should be commended for their hard work and perseverance in the research, design, experimentation, analysis, and presentation of their own research project. Judges of the fair include STEM area teachers, university professors, and industry professionals.

Cancer Support Community
Greater Philadelphia has been providing FREE support to those impacted by cancer for over 30 years. This means someone they care about has/had cancer, they themselves have/had cancer or their person died from cancer. Here is a brief overview of what we are offering this spring along with a few attached flyers.
Teen Essay Contests: Open to 6th-12th graders who have or had cancer in their life. Encouragement from trusted teachers and counselors often inspires students to share their experiences through writing. As you know, writing is a very helpful way to process thoughts and feelings about what has happened to them. The attached flier contains all the requirements and registration details, with the essay deadline set for Monday, April 1st.
Kid Support Groups: In person sessions starting in March for families with cancer.
Living with Loss Groups: Monthly in-person groups for K-6th graders, along with a parent group and virtual groups for middle and high school students.
Straight Talk about Cancer Groups: Tailored for teens, these groups take place both inside schools and virtually.
Snowy Spectacular with Friends Party: A winter celebration for families to anticipate, providing an opportunity to connect with others who have faced or are facing cancer. The event includes a DJ, games, food and crafts.
Cancer can be an isolating experience, and at CSCGP, we firmly believe that no one should face it alone.
