October 2023
Message from the Superintendent
Hello Emery community,
October is an important month where we recognize the significance of mental health and how we can best support our school district community. I would like to share that our counselors, health staff, and teachers are here for students always. You are never alone, and our team is here for you. I encourage parents and guardians to have conversations with children about taking care of their mental health. Please reach out to your school for further support.
With the increased spread of the flu during this time of year, it is important that all students regularly receive wellness checkups from their health care provider. I encourage parents and guardians to read the latest update from the California Department of Public Health on when to keep your child home if they are showing symptoms of illness. You are welcome to contact the Emeryville Health Center to have your child seen by a medical provider.
In recognition of Week of the School Administrator, I thank all our administrative staff, including our Principals, Ms. Burke, Mr. Animuntu, and Ms. Goode, for their support of our schools, staff, students, and families. We appreciate your unwavering commitment to excellence.
Thank you to our Emery community for your continued support of our school district.
Sincerely,
Dr. Quiauna Scott

Emery Students Exceed State Average CAASPP Scores
The California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) test scores have been released for the 2022-2023 school year. Congratulations to our 11th graders who exceeded the state average for English Language Arts (ELA)! 58.97% of our students who took the exam met or exceeded the standard for ELA. That is higher than the state average of 55.41%!
We celebrate the hard work you put into preparing for the exams. More scores are available by school and school district here.
Red Ribbon Week
Our students are celebrating Red Ribbon Week! Red Ribbon Week highlights the importance of living a drug-free life. It presents an opportunity for parents, educators, and communities to reinforce the drug-free messages they share with their children throughout the year.
During Red Ribbon Week, students around the nation pledge to increase their knowledge by learning more about the destructive effects of drug abuse, such as prescription drug misuse, and renew their commitment to live a healthy, drug-free lifestyle.
Week of the School Administrators
National Bullying Prevention Month
Attendance
Safe, in-person learning is critical to the well-being and development of children. However, when a student arrives at school with symptoms of illness or develops symptoms on site, action must be taken to ensure the health and safety of staff and students.
We encourage our students to submit the consent form to receive services from the Emeryville Health Center on campus in case of an emergency. We also encourage parents and guardians to take into consideration the health of their child before sending them to school.
The first priority is to evaluate the need for emergency medical attention. If the child does not require immediate medical attention, a decision must then be made to either send the child home (i.e., temporarily exclude) or allow them to remain on site.
Many factors will be considered when making this decision, including how to limit the potential for spreading harmful diseases to others and how to limit educational, social, and other losses that might occur due to unnecessary or excessive absence.
Let's work together to make sure that all students are ready for school every day! We are here to help! Email attendance@emeryusd.org for more info.

Flu Shots and COVID-19 Vaccine
Now is the time to get a flu shot! Students can receive the flu shot at the Emeryville Health Center, in partnership with the Alameda County Health Care Services Agency.
A dose of the updated COVID-19 vaccine is recommended for everyone 6 months of age and older. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it is safe to get both the COVID-19 vaccine and flu shot together. Call the Emeryville Health Center for more information: (510) 833-7050.
Anti-Bullying and Social-Emotional Learning
Anna Yates Elementary School classrooms are using a Social-Emotional Toolbox in support of their mental health and social-emotional learning. The Toolbox is a set of strength based common language rooted in resilience, self-knowledge, self-awareness, and non-violence.
The Toolbox enables us to use the inner “Tools” for social-emotional support that already exists inside us. Students can practice these techniques at home as well.
We are also partnering with BART and the Emery Police Department to host a student mentorship program with emphasis on anti-bullying to support our students.
Filipino American History Month
Filipino American History Month (FAHM) in October commemorates the first Filipinos to arrive in the continental United States at what is now Morro Bay, California on October 18, 1587. In 1992, the Filipino American National Historical Society introduced FAHM, and in 2009 U.S. Congress officially recognized October as FAHM in the U.S. We recognize and celebrate the contributions of Filipinos in our community. Learn more here.
LGBTQ+ History Month
This month we recognize LGBTQ+ History Month! Our school district is committed to providing a safe school environment where all LGBTQ+ identifying members of our community feel validated and welcomed. When students feel safe, they can focus on learning and growing. For instructional resources from the California Department of Education for educators, students, and families, click here.
