Mrs. Cathy Coy is our Family Advocate. Cathy is committed to supporting the social and emotional health of our students and their families. She works hard to provide family engagement opportunities as a way to strengthen relationships between the school, the students, and their families and is available to help families connect with services and resources. She strongly believes there is a significant and positive impact on our students when we are all working together.

On November 13, LAES families were invited to celebrate World Kindness Day by creating Kindness Yard Signs, writing Christmas Cards to patients in hospitals or nursing homes and contributing to our school Kindness Chain.

At Las Animas School District, we celebrate the first step to success...showing up! Through our Attendance Counts system, students with perfect attendance each month receive a coupon for a free small cone at the Las Animas DQ. In addition, we celebrate the grade level with the highest attendance percentage by decorating a portion of the "Big A" traveling trophy. Special thanks to Las Animas Dairy Queen for sponsoring Attendance Counts.

The LAES Building Accountability Committee meets quarterly to offer feedback & guidance on school initiatives. This year, the committee is particularly interested in the following topics:

• Communication & partnerships with families and community organizations
• Recruitment & retention of high quality staff
• Being a "school of choice" in our area with high academic standards
• Implementation of Social Skills & Life Skills lessons

Each newsletter offers family engagement ideas to do at home. We invite you to set aside time to do the activity and submit a photo of your family to engagement@la-schools.net with December Engagement in the subject line. All families that email in photos will receive a prize!

• Go on a walking or driving tour of holiday lights
• Donate gently used toys
• Write Thank You notes
• Build a gingerbread house
• Celebrate with a cultural or family tradition
