Mr. Kirschenbaum, ELA
This week, we will explore Vietnam and its history and we prepare to begin reading Inside Out & Back Again. We will also begin a new research project based on student interest. In addition, we will practice use of pronouns in sentences. If you want to practice with pronouns, you can work on the Pronoun Activity Pack on Quill (Clever).
On Wednesday, students will take ANET 2 to demonstrate their knowledge of literary analysis. We have been practicing these skills in ELA Class with RACE Body Paragraphs. There is nothing that students need to study in advance of this assessment.
Mx. Gomez, Math
Tutoring this week will be on Tuesday after school due to a staff meeting this upcoming Wednesday. Retakes for RCT’s will be held on Thursday after school. Please encourage your scholar to stop by tutoring for a refresher if they plan on retaking their RCT this upcoming week or in preparation for their Formative in Math 6.
This past week in Math 6, we engaged in applying the distributive method, substitution of variables and how to plot coordinates in the coordinate plane. We will build on this next week when we begin writing equations for given tables and real-world scenarios. We will close out the week with a Formative.
This past week in Math 7, we began Unit 6 on Expressions, Equations, and Inequalities. The Zearn Lessons began in class is to help solidify student’s understanding with Expressions and Equations before we move into Inequalities.
Ms. Wesselhoft, Geography
Next week, students will begin the theme of Unit 5: Population Growth & Urbanization. Students will begin the week with an interactive look at how the population has grown over the last 200 years. We will then read, annotate, and answer questions that help explain why the population grew the way it did. At the end of the week, students will complete a formative assessment to explain the cause and effect.
Ms. Sagan, Science
Hello and Happy Valentine’s Day, scientists!
We had a short week this week with no school Wednesday (snow day!) or Friday (professional development day). Students completed their Earth’s Place in Our Universe Summative test and began learning about historical understandings of our solar system by drawing out scientific models from various time periods.
Next week we will compare geocentric and heliocentric models of our solar system and discuss the beliefs and institutions which influenced astronomers and the public when these models were developed. We will end the week with a scale model activity to help students to visualize the true scale of our solar system and the universe.
Our root words for next week are:
*aqua = water (think: aquarium, aquatic)
cumulo = heap (think: cumulative, cumulonimbus)
*cirrus = curl (think: cirrostratus)
*photo = light (think: photosynthesis, photograph)
nimbus = dark cloud (think: cumulonimbus, nimbostratus)
Keepers are: angle, deci, semi, alp, morph, sed, gram, hydro, iso
