West Wing PTSA Annual Fundrasier - APEX is Here!
Dear West Wing Community,
We're excited to announce our upcoming West Wing PTSA fundraiser, APEX, a fantastic opportunity for our school community to come together and support our students' learning environment.
The funds raised through APEX will be used to purchase much-needed resources for our students and teachers, including:
- Campus Improvements: Improving our outdoor classroom spaces, playgrounds, and shade structures.
- Classroom Furniture: Ensuring our students have collaborative and functional spaces to learn.
- Technology: Enhancing teaching and learning with updated classroom devices such as document cameras.
- STEAM & Technology: Providing our students with the tools they need to develop skills and engage in effective lessons that include science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics.
Your participation in APEX is crucial to the success of our school. We encourage you to join us in supporting our school and making a positive impact on our students' educational experience.
We are inviting our parents to attend our K-6 kick off assembly, K-6 Obstacle Course, and our 7-8 Color Battle!

Dear Parents,
As we enter the second quarter of the school year, I want to take a moment to remind everyone that regular school attendance is crucial to student’s success and growth. Please know that we are fully committed to ensuring your child's academic success.
Unfortunately, we have experienced an excessive amount of student absences and tardies during our first quarter of this year. We have more than 155 students who have missed 3 or more days of school.
We know that students who attend school consistently perform better, stay on track, and achieve high levels of learning. Studies show that when students are frequently absent or late to school, they miss out on important learning which can affect their academic performance through high school.
We want to remind everyone of the state guidelines regarding attendance:
A student is considered “habitually truant” after 5 or more unexcused absences.
A student has “excessive absences” if they miss more than 10% of the school year, regardless of whether the absences are excused or unexcused.
In Arizona, parents are responsible for ensuring that children between the ages of six and sixteen attend school regularly. If a student reaches 5 unexcused absences or 18 total absences (excused or unexcused), parents/guardians and/or the student may be required to appear in court under Arizona Revised Statutes A.R.S. 15-802 or 15-803.
We want to encourage parents to prioritize attendance for the remainder of the school year. We know that doctor appointments during the school day cannot always be avoided. Please utilize the district calendar to schedule vacations. We have lots of breaks coming up and we know that family time is important. If your child is experiencing challenges that impact their ability to attend school please reach out to Mr. Hancock, our assistant principal at 623-376-5000.
Thank you,
Mrs. Schubert
Principal

Thanksgiving Lunch!
Dear Parents and Grandparents,
We are excited for our annual Thanksgiving Lunch on Thursday, November 21. Parents and Grandparents are able to join their children at their designated lunch time. Prepayment will be required for all adult lunches and cost $4.50 per adult. Parents may come into the front office or send in cash or check (made out to DVUSD) to purchase an adult meal on or before 10/25. If you are sending your student with cash, please send in the exact amount. Students who bring in a check or cash to the cafeteria to purchase an adult meal will bring home a receipt for their adult meals. Prepaid adult meals will present their receipt on the day of our Thanksgiving Lunch to receive their adult lunch. Last year we served almost 300 adult lunches so we want to make sure that we have enough food for everyone! Unfortunately, we are not able to accommodate any children that are not enrolled at West Wing. We appreciate your understanding.
No adults will be permitted unless they have a prepaid meal receipt at the cafeteria door. All adults will need a prepaid ticket. If you have any questions please call our cafeteria at 623-376-5014 and speak with Blanca, our amazing cafeteria manager!
Volunteers are needed to serve during our Thanksgiving Lunch. A sign-up link will be shared by PTSA soon.
Crossing Guard Needed
West Wing School is in need of a crossing guard. This is such a great way to give back to our community by ensuring our students' safety as they travel to and from school. If you are interested or know someone who is, please help us! Our incredible students need you and they are a lot of fun too!
Thank you!
Certified Substitutes Needed
West Wing School is in need of certified substitutes. We are looking for anyone interested in subbing for our incredible classrooms. If you are interested and would like to learn more, please call our front office and speak with Mrs. Owsley at 623-376-5000. We are happy to answer any questions you have!
Mustang Store Donations Needed
Dear Parents,
We are in need of donations for our wildly popular Mustang Store. Our students receive tickets when they deomonstrate our school-wide expectations, Respect, Compassion, and Integrity. Each month they have an opportunity to exchange their tickets for items at our Mustang Store. This year we have added some exciting "experience" items to our store. Students recently purchased time with their teacher to eat their lunch or a movie at end of the day.
Hello Parents and Guardians!
Deer Valley is conducting a curriculum materials adoption for all 8th grade Science classes. We are committed to a transparent process and encourage you to take a few minutes to look at the materials that are being considered and provide feedback for the adoption committee. Information about the materials can be found on our District website at https://www.dvusd.org/Page/89987.
The materials will be available for review until November 1, 2024.

During our 2:00 pm dismissal time teachers meet in together and we call these Collaborative Team meetings. West Wing is a PLC school (Professional Learning Community). Our 90 minute early release days support planning for student learning, interventions, and targeted support. This time is invaluable to our teachers, and our students, as it gives critical time to our teacher teams to design skill-based instruction and assessments, review student progress data, and design supports and interventions. Learn more about what happens in PLC at DVUSD.org/PLC.
