The Pritchett Post -- 9/20/24
Home of the Panthers!
Dear Pritchett Families,
We want your child to be successful in school and that means supporting and encouraging their whole development. While excelling in academic classes is important, children also need skills to take on learning challenges, make good decisions, manage strong emotions, and get along with others.
This month we began Second Step® Elementary, a research-based social-emotional learning program designed to improve children’s social-emotional skills. Second Step skills and concepts are designed to help children both in and out of school. Four units will cover the following:
- Growth Mindset & Goal-Setting: Children learn how to pay attention and manage distractions, develop a growth mindset, and apply goal-setting strategies to their social and academic lives.
- Emotion Management: Children learn how to identify and label emotions and use emotion management strategies—including stress management for older students—to calm strong feelings.
- Empathy & Kindness: Children learn how to recognize kindness and act kindly, have empathy for others and take others’ perspectives, and recognize kind acts and empathy as important elements of building and maintaining relationships.
- Problem-Solving: Children learn how to identify and state a problem, recognize if a problem is an accident, and use the STEP problem-solving process:
- S: Say the problem
- T: Think of solutions
- E: Explore the outcomes
- P: Pick a solution
For an overview of our first unit, Growth Mindset & Goal Setting, please click the grade-level link below. You’ll receive weekly communications from your child’s teacher to help you reinforce Second Step language, skills, and goals at home. If you have any questions about Second Step Elementary, please don’t hesitate to contact me or your child’s teacher for more information. Thank you for your support as we work to build a safe and supportive school community.
For your children,
Dr. Matt K. Moreland, Principal
The Zones of Regulation
In addition to our implementation of the Second Step program, like previous school years, we will be utilizing The Zones of Regulation with our students. Created by author Leah M. Kuypers, The Zones of Regulation helps children acquire skills to help them regulate their actions. This in turn leads to increased self-control and problem solving. In essence, there are (4) colors associated with various feels. Our goal in using The Zones of Regulation is to create a common language for all students and staff to utilize. Below are the colors and associated feelings. Families may want to incorporate this at home as well.
Peace Week
This week our school celebrated “Peace Week”. This Pritchett tradition was started in 2012 on the 11th anniversary of 9/11, now known as Patriot Day. The goal was to bridge September 11 with an emphasis on patriotism and heroism, with the message of creating peace at school, home and in our world. We want our students to think about the freedom we have as Americans and how we can use our freedom to be the change we wish to see in the world. We encourage social action as well as simple acts of kindness. Please spend some time talking to your child about what peace means and how you can share peace in your lives.
Today, September 20, children will create a pinwheel and throughout the day more than 400 students will place them in the school's front lawn as part of the international effort, "Pinwheels for Peace". It will be inspiring to be a part of such a wonderful event!
