Tim Nguyen, Director of Career Services Retirement
It is with mixed emotions that ESUHSD CTE announces the retirement of Tim Nguyen, who has served as the Director of Career Services since 2015. Under his leadership, CTE experienced renewed growth with a focus on relevant technical skills, career skills, and work-based learning opportunities to empower students to succeed in diverse careers. Mr. Nguyen led with integrity, vision, and an unwavering commitment to the values that define the East Side Union High School District and has been an inspiring figure for both faculty and students, always placing the needs of the learners at the heart of every decision. While Mr. Nguyen will be greatly missed, his legacy will continue to guide CTE as it moves forward. We are deeply grateful for his 42 years of service and dedication, and we wish Tim Nguyen all the best in this well-deserved next chapter.

Independence High School - Academy of Finance (AoF)
- MADE I & II Academy by Deloitte - May 2023, January 2024, April 2024 - AoF partnered with Deloitte to pilot the MADE Academy I & II, part of their initiative to diversify the accounting field by supporting students from high school to early college. Academy I began with a career exploration workshop led by Deloitte volunteers at Independence High. In April 2023, 46 students participated in Academy II at Deloitte’s San Jose campus, engaging in workshops, a career panel, and networking opportunities. They also toured the office, built their personal brands, and received career advice from a recruiter. Students are now preparing to complete the final Academy III workshop in March 2025.
“Thank you to all of the volunteers and people at Deloitte for making this field trip possible. I am grateful for the panelist that really opened up my eyes when I came to accounting and business in general. I enjoyed the one-on-one conversations I had that really gave me lots of insight into how workplace life is. I also appreciate the tour of the place which showed how Deloitte operates; lots of collaboration to get the work done. From this experience, I learned that accounting is not just reporting net and gross income on a spreadsheet, but it's more than that. Accounting comes in forms of financial support or funding ventures a business has. During a conversation with an accountant, I learned smart strategies when filing tax. In all, I appreciate the effort you all put into making this possible and for us to experience this.”

Plus, OGHS is officially a HOSA chapter, unlocking leadership opportunities in health science!
William C. Overfelt Engineering Academy
William C. Overfelt's Engineering Academy took its 10th-grade class on a trip to Monterey Bay. The first stop was at High Scores Interactive Arcade Museum. There, the owners Shawn and Megan Livernoche gave students an in-depth look into their passion for retro arcade machines and showed them the inner workings of different types of cabinets and machines - from CRT displays and complex-yet-fragile circuit boards to more modern Raspberry Pi / Arduino builds. Students were also shown schematics and components - and of course, got to experience the machines for themselves! One student even made the Q*Bert high score list!
The next stop was CSU Monterey Bay, where students were given a tour of the campus and got to see some of the new buildings and amenities the university had to offer.
The Engineering Academy students arrived back at school excited in anticipation of the subsequent projects that still await them, as they are preparing to look into designing, building, and programming their own machines inspired by their visit to the museum - and of course, for many of them, sharing the excitement of their first of hopefully many college visits!
Andrew Hill High School Medical Magnet
Seven members from our HOSA chapter, along with our advisor Mr. Shih, attended the FLC at Ygnacio Valley High School. It was a great experience with a variety of health-related workshops and delicious food. I had the chance to participate in four workshops: CERT, CPR, First Aid, and Suturing. Before attending the CPR workshop, I already knew the basics, but I’d never actually performed it on a dummy. I learned some important steps, like ensuring the scene is safe, checking if the person is conscious, and feeling for a pulse before starting CPR. One challenge I faced was that I had trouble pushing down two inches during chest compressions. However, I realized that I wasn't leaning over the dummy properly, and once I adjusted my posture, I was able to apply more pressure. The CPR and suturing workshops were definitely my favorites because they offered the most hands-on experience. In the suturing workshop, I learned how to sew the needle through the skin, but I had some difficulty with the knotting. I found using a monofilament suture (a single thread) much easier than the braided suture, which has multiple threads twisted together. Overall, attending FLC was a great opportunity to meet new people from other HOSA chapters and I learned new skills that I wouldn't have sought out on my own. I would highly recommend that other members in our chapter should attend FLC at least once to get the experiences before going to SLC and even participating in workshops that could help with their events.
Silver Creek High School Business & Innovation

Piedmont Hills High School Dual CTE Field Trip - Manufacturing and Marketing & Entrepreneurship Programs

When Kyle Dobrenz saw that his students had the opportunity to visit Mike & Niki's Honey Company during Manufacturing Week, he knew that not only would his manufacturing students benefit from the trip but so would Marketing & Entrepreneurship students. Students were given the details of how the business came to be including hurdles faced while also hearing about future goals and the manufacturing process. The students not only walked away with a new mentor in Niki, but also with free samples of honey sticks!
Yerba Buena High School Law & Society
Law & Society students had the opportunity to attend the Family Justice Center in downtown San Jose. Students rotated courtrooms and got to observe drug and mental health court proceedings. We got to observe a courtroom where offenders participate in a diversion program and receive services to help support the insecurities they face and reduce their chances of committing a crime again. Students then had an opportunity to ask questions during the hearings and a separate opportunity to hear from the court sheriff officer about his educational experience, and career pathway, and learn more about his daily job. This was a great trip and a wonderful opportunity for students to learn about future careers in the law pathway!

Insane Ink student enterprise had the opportunity to interact with their sales representative from their goods supplies. Andrew Hill High School - Graphic Design
This Lunar New Year project is a career-focused exploration of cultural storytelling through visual art. Students are tasked with creating an artwork centered on the Year of the Snake, using symbols and imagery that convey meaningful narratives tied to Lunar New Year traditions. Through this project, students develop professional skills in concept development, visual communication, and symbolic design, reflecting cultural themes and personal perspectives. By crafting a project statement and showcasing their work, students practice articulating their creative process and the significance behind their designs, preparing them for future careers in art, design, or creative industries that value thoughtful and impactful storytelling.
