#UMNMCH student Kaitlyn Traub (MPH 2022) wrote this reflection on how her deployment with the Title V Maternal and Child Health Block Grant Team at the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) has contributed to her career in MCH. Her work creating briefs at MDH highlighted the importance of describing systems impacting the health of Minnesotans. In this piece, Kaitlyn shares how intentional, equity-based reporting practices can change the way populations are described in Minnesota and the impacts such reporting can have on health.

Join the Cross-Center Collaboration on the Health of Justice-Involved Women and Children (JIWC) for this webinar hosted by our sister MCH Center of Excellence at Emory. Lanetta Garner, a Peer Support Specialist, will discuss her experiences working at Human Solutions Women's Shelters, and Alicia Roach, an experienced doula from Oregon. Jessica Katz (The Family Preservation Project), Lesley Mondeaux (Northwest Mothers Milk Bank), and Carrie Cohen (Portland State University) will also share their work in supporting families and children of incarcerated mothers. This is the third of a four-part webinar series focused on “Support through Separation: Coping with Physical and Emotional Separation.”

This initiative advances health equity across the country on behalf of all racial and ethnic minorities. Each year the Black Mamas Matter Alliance (BMMA) and their allies celebrate the resilience, advocacy, and changemaking of Black birthing people during Black Maternal Health Week (BMHW). Find #BMHW22 events in UMN's CAHRE's recent newsletter. Watch and recap the 2022 Black Maternal Health Week National Call recognizing the fifth anniversary of BMHW. The video discusses the purpose and goals of #BMHW22 and highlights all of the major activities happening online and across the nation.

The Association of Maternal & Child Health Programs (AMCHP) is hosting a panel discussion during Black Maternal Health Week featuring Aftershock filmmakers Paula Eiselt and Tonya Lewis, and maternal health advocate Shawnee Benton-Gibson. The US has one of the highest levels of maternal mortality among developed nations. Black birthing people and families are disproportionately impacted, with Black women being 3 to 5 times more likely to experience a maternal death than white women. Register for this discussion on Birth Justice to learn from the lived experiences of Black communities in memory of those who have passed from maternal mortality.

Education sessions include: Salud Mental 101, Understanding the Children’s Mental Health System, Transitions: Supporting Your Child with Mental Illness into Adulthood, Mental Health Crisis Planning for Families, Understanding Early Episode Psychosis for Families, Ansiedad y Depresión, Mental Health 101, You are the Expert: How to Successfully Advocate for Your Child, Early Warning Signs of Mental Illness in Youth, and Special Education. Two wellness activities, Yoga for Youth and Family members and Art Therapy, will also be included in the day's schedule.

The Public Health Conference of Iowa, presented by CareSource, is the premier convening of Iowa’s public health and environmental health communities and for all those who work in public health, environmental health, primary care, health promotion, health education, laboratory sciences, and exposure to other disciplines within public health. The conference will be a hybrid conference held in-person on May 3-4, 2022, at Scheman Conference Center at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa and will be fully virtual on May 5. All three days will be available virtually on the Pheedloop platform.

Hennepin County is soliciting proposals for community engagement consultant services. The county is seeking a vendor to facilitate and implement community-driven solutions to improve maternal health outcomes. These consultant services will support a community engagement effort to collaborate, develop, and implement a birth justice plan centering on Black and Indigenous birthing individuals, their families, and communities.

Our sister Center of Excellence in MCH at Boston University launched its new podcast, C2: Critical Conversations that Lie at the Heart of Health Justice. These episodes serve to generate conversations in classrooms and living rooms about issues and strategic solutions critical to the health of communities and families, focusing on how to achieve health justice as a collective.

This brief is part of a larger effort by Child Trends researchers to expand knowledge about Black children and families. This effort includes continued work on Black family cultural assets and the development of a new multi-year applied research agenda on Black children and families.

MDH's Family Home Visiting program offers access to and information on a variety of training and professional development opportunities and related resources. During 2021, Minnesota program grantees participated in a continuous quality improvement (CQI) project to improve depression screenings. The Kaiser Family Foundation has released The Conversation / La conversación, which includes 40+ new FAQ videos. These videos address common questions and concerns about the COVID-19 vaccines before, during, and after pregnancy. All content is available rights-free and designed to be shared on social media and can be easily embedded on websites. This community toolkit provides additional graphics and promotions to extend the reach of the messaging.

This newly updated toolkit from the Centers for Disease Control provides resources and tools to help pregnant and recently pregnant people, breastfeeding people, and new parents caring for infants protect their health and help people who serve these communities communicate with them.
