NMS Update 1.26.2025
Northfield Middle School 24 -25

Grade 7 Courage Retreat
The entire 7th grade class will be participating in the Youth Frontiers Courage Retreat on Tuesday, January 28th, 2025.
Youth Frontiers (YF) is a nonprofit organization that has been delivering retreats to schools since 1987. They provide schools with experiences that inspire character, civility and community so that our next generation of leaders is grounded in character. On the Courage Retreat, the YF Programs Staff will focus on creating a more positive school community by engaging students in a variety of activities that enhance self-confidence, empathy and connectedness. Here is a link if you would like to read more information about the program https://www.youthfrontiers.org/courage-retreat/
The retreat will take place at Bethel Lutheran Church and St. John’s Lutheran Church in Northfield. On this day, we will divide our 7th graders into two groups to attend this event. Team 1 will be at Bethel and Team 2 will be at St. John’s. All 7th grade students are expected to attend just like a regular school day. They will leave school around 8:30 AM and arrive back to NMS at the end of the school day. No permission form or payment is needed for this event.
Students may bring their own lunch from home. If you would like the school to prepare a lunch for them, please fill out this google form Courage Retreat Lunch Request by January 17th.
If you have any questions, please contact the Student Support Office at 507-663-0664.

Cognitive Science Research Program
The middle school continues to maintain a strong partnership with both St. Olaf and Carleton Colleges, which includes teacher volunteers, tutors, and field experiences. We are excited to share an opportunity with our families regarding an upcoming research project with Fiona Liberge, a senior at Carleton College. Fiona is seeking student participants for her study, and we encourage interested families to learn more below. Please reach out if you have any questions.
Message from Fiona Liberge:
Hello! My name is Fiona Liberge, and I am a senior in the Cognitive Science Program at Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota. I am conducting research on how young minds make connections between narrative stories and am looking for students to participate.
In my study, I will assess what your child remembers from Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief and explore how their familiarity with that story relates to their understanding of a similar myth that I have written.
For more details about the study, please review and complete the attached consent form. Physical consent forms are also available in the school office.
Thank you for considering participation in my research!
Best regards,
Fiona Liberge

Registration fee includes membership to Minnesota Junior B.A.S.S. Nation and all tournament entries. Anglers must purchase a membership for Bass Masters ($10) once they are on the team. Further information regarding training and tournament dates, etc. will be available at the informational meeting Monday, February 3, at 7 pm in the high school auditorium.

Tutoring Hotline
Tutoring Hotline is a volunteer program that matches Carleton volunteers with Rice County students of all ages in need of free, one-on-one academic assistance in any subject. Our program supports students who already have a set curriculum; our tutors are not equipped to assign new content. Approved tutors sign up for specific tutoring requests depending on their academic interests and availability and will meet with students for about one hour, once a week in a public location or via Zoom. Tutoring sessions are individualized to the student’s needs and may include review of concepts learned in school, preparation for upcoming tests, help with homework, etc.
