Overview
The Chelsea Public Schools are proud of the opportunities that we aim to provide students beyond the school year, ranging from deepening their academic investigation to second chances on academic success.
Our programs are rooted in the needs and interests of our learners and help create experiences that re-ignite students excitement around learning.
As we continue our efforts to know students by name, strength and story we are doing the real work of shaping intentional, valuable and energized programming for all learners.
Middle School Acceleration Academy
The Middle School Acceleration Academy was designed to offer a well-rounded learning experience by combining teamwork, creativity, art, humanities, and STEM applications. This approach helped students connect different areas of learning and supported their overall academic development.
Project Adventure for 7th and 8th was a program designed to enhance students' teamwork and creativity skills through a variety of engaging projects each day. These projects provided a practical application of their classroom knowledge, and real-world problem-solving.
In art class, students explored self-expression by creating portraits that went beyond physical appearances. They used a combination of drawings, photos, and words to craft collages that reflected their inner selves, allowing for a deeper exploration of personal identity.
This summer, the Humanities class focused on the graphic novel The Unwanted, which addresses the Syrian refugee crisis. For their project, they developed their own graphic novels, integrating researched refugee stories with personal family histories, statistical data, and fictional narratives.
In STEM, students engaged in engineering challenges centered around prosthetic limbs for animals. These activities emphasized the role of innovation in improving design and functionality, providing a hands-on approach to solving real-world problems.
Calculus Project
The Calculus Project is an innovative educational initiative designed to accelerate middle school students' understanding of advanced mathematics.
Targeting 7th and 8th graders, this program aims to prepare young learners for high school calculus by fostering a deep comprehension of foundational concepts.
This summer, through engaging lessons, interactive activities, and real-world applications, students developed critical thinking and problem-solving skills, equipping them for future academic success in mathematics and beyond.
The project emphasizes collaborative learning and individual growth, ensuring that each student can achieve their full potential in a supportive and challenging environment with a few field trips and an innovation lab thrown in.
Awards Ceremony
Students were recognized at the end of the program with an Awards Ceremony!
High School Acceleration Academy
This summer, the High School Acceleration Academy piloted two transformative programs: 3DE and Xterra/Virtual Reality. Through both of these programs, students worked to enhance their collaboration, problem- solving, communication, and technological proficiency.
Through the 3DE program, students worked with Delta airlines in order to solve a real-world business problem. Students came up with solutions to Delta’s case study in small groups and presented their projects to community business leaders for feedback. Two finalist groups presented at the JA Innovation Center during the final week of the program.
In their classes, students also designed their ideal travel itinerary, researching destinations worldwide to plan a trip that would immerse them in the culture of each country.
The Xterra/Virtual Reality program allowed students to experience and create their own virtual reality worlds.
The High School Acceleration Academy's summer program this year showcased a dedication to innovative education, providing students with useful skills and experiences that will help their academic and professional futures.
Transition Program
The 8th to 9th Grade transition program gives incoming freshmen the opportunity to get a glimpse of what a high school classroom could look like when they arrive to CHS.
Students engaged in multiple project-based learning experiences, including preparing for a scientific debate, creating their own research project, and even running their own campaign to be elected as president. Each teacher took different topics from their content areas, and added fun twists to them to have students be more hands-on.
In addition to what happened in the classroom, students were able to explore and learn outside of the school. Trips this year included visits to the Harvard Natural History Museum, Bunker Hill Community College, and a scavenger hunt around the city. In particular, students were able to learn a lot about early college/ dual enrollment programs that CHS offers to its students, which got these incoming freshmen already thinking about their post-secondary education.
Extended School Year
This summer students entitled to participate in Extended School year worked hard all July. Students continued working on their IEP goals, participated in any services indicated in their IEP, and continued learning in a structured school environment.
MLE Summer Enrichment Program
MLE Summer enrichment Program is designed to continue to support middle school and high school emerging language learners in their transition to our school and city community during summer months when language learning regression is most anticipated.
In addition, while delivering daily opportunities to engage students to practice using English language in all language domains in structured and academic environment, teachers are creating a smoother pathways for students’ transition to the next school year.
High School Credit Recovery Program is ensuring that high school MLE students have an opportunity to recover credits and graduation requirements not obtained during the school year. One of the MLE counselors is the support teacher. 12 students have completed 1 or more classes already!
Our Final Week: Community and Belonging
This program culminated with numerous presentations that tie to the theme of the program: Community and Belonging.
It was a great feeling of pleasure, hope and pride to see students presenting their work and brochure about what they learned about the Chelsea community, each other, and the English language. Hope our students will continue to enjoy and benefit from these programs in the future.
