What We're Reading: VPL Book Chats
Virginia stopped in this week and recommended Tess Gerritsen's Martini Club series: 'The Spy Coast' and 'The Summer Guests.' We have both books available at the Vinton Public Library in regular print and large type. Happy reading!
'The Correspondent' by Virginia Evans is a tender novel told entirely through the handwritten letters of its main character, Sybil Van Antwerp. This epistolary format is both charming and intimate, allowing readers to gradually piece together the arc of Sybil’s life—from her accomplished career as a law partner and chief clerk for a judge to her experiences as a mother, friend, and correspondent. She writes to friends, family, customer service reps, and even famous authors, offering witty, and often, quite blunt advice, but her letters also quietly reveal the lingering sorrow of a child lost decades ago—a grief that has never fully healed. Now in her seventies, divorced for decades, and losing her vision, Sybil reflects on her past, her regrets, and the enduring beauty of connection through the written word and one that made me miss the days when I received something besides junk mail in my mailbox. Happy reading, friends. ~Heather
I recently read 'Mrs. Plansky's Revenge' by Spencer Quinn and I loved it! The setup is memorable; Loretta Plansky gets a late-night phone call from her 'grandson' needing her bank account information and password to help him pay for a recent DWI. In less than 24 hours her checking account, savings account and pension have all been drawn down to zero. Embarrassed by her naivete, discouraged by the lack of assistance from the authorities, and driven by the desire to honor her late husband's financial legacy, Mrs. Plansky is determined to find this 'grandson' and right some wrongs.
The cover boasts a glowing endorsement from Stephen King. The book is fast-paced, full of whip-smart internal and external dialogue, and it left me cheering for the courageous Mrs. Plansky. Published in 2024 with a sequel on the way, I consider this a must-read for fans of Richard Osman's 'The Thursday Murder Club.'
It currently has 3.7/5 stars on goodreads.com, and is available for checkout in regular print at the Vinton Public Library.
Happy reading!
