Engineering/PLTW
Senior engineering capstone students Zach Coon and Kyle Gutfreund, test the structural strength of their 3D printed phone case designed to replace a more expensive GoPro action camera.
New this year to the EC Engineering and Technology Department are Hydraulic and Pneumatic trainers. These training modules enable students to learn how these systems work and how they can be manipulated to perform various tasks. These trainers broaden the students practical knowledge that will help them to understand more complex machinery in the future.
Principles of Engineering students are currently involved in creating Vex Robotic Test beds. This project gives them an introduction to Machine Control where they will connect multiple analog and digital inputs and outputs. Testing these inputs and outputs will give them the background knowledge needed to construct a more complex robotic device that can be remotely controlled. This remote controlled device will have to perform a series of tasks and be put through challenges. The creator's skill and creativity will be put to the test to succeed.
English
The English Academic Team qualified for the IASP Indiana Academic Super Bowl competition, and they will compete at Purdue University’s Loeb Playhouse on Saturday, May 4. The competition team is Captain Molly Graham, Hannah Weiler, Jackson Ketcham, and Aly Bailey, and they are supported by their fellow teammates Nicole Crawley, Grace Lyness, Paige Lyness, and Lara Moster. This year marks the fourth time in four years that the English Team has reached the state meet, placing 1st in 2018, 3rd in 2017, and 1st in 2016.
The competition is a big moment for the two seniors. Captain Molly Graham said, “I’m excited about going to the state meet for the fourth time with my team. I love working with my peers, though I’m sad it will all be over for me this week.” Senior Hannah Weiler said, “I’m really excited to experience my first Academic Super Bowl. Mrs. Trossman, my teammates, and I have made some great memories and I definitely wish I would have participated all four years.”
This year’s contest theme is “The Fertile Crescent,” which for the English Team includes the Sumerian story The Epic of Gilgamesh, the Egyptian short stories “The Tale of the Shipwrecked Sailor” and “The Tale of Sinuhe,” and five Hebrew psalms.
The Social Studies team also qualified for the Academic Super Bowl. Led by team captain Dylan Schutte, the team consists of Elizabeth Busha, Sara Hartley, Luciano Montazemi, and Oliver Moster. The team is coached by Mr. Tim Maluvac.

Introduction to Fashion and Textiles: The Fashion Students are currently finishing their sewing projects for this semester. We will be posting pictures in the May Newsletter of our completed projects. The students have learned many additional skills and techniques about sewing this semester.
Advanced Child Development: The students in the Advanced Child Development Classes completed their “Playschool” experience for 3-5 year old children on Tuesdays and Thursdays in April. The Playschool is operated just like a preschool and the children participate in both large group instruction as well as working through centers around the room ranging from dramatic play, science and math activities, crafts and a healthy snack. The Playschool Graduation was held on Tuesday, April 30, 2019. The entire program is an outstanding experience for both the preschoolers and the high school students to understand the operating of a child care program as well as understanding how preschoolers development socially, emotionally, physically and intellectually. We would to thank the parents/caregivers who brought the children to our school for each session. We appreciate your time and support!

Foreign Language
La fin de l’année: It’s Finally Here?!
It’s already May! How did we get here so fast? It feels like we started the 2018-2019 school year only yesterday. It has been an amazing year for French students at East Central. We have learned about French foods, discussed French culture and politics, and we’ve been reading our hearts out (en français, of course!). I am very proud of my students and their achievements this school year.
A major accomplishment that my levels 1 and 2 have been able to achieve is reading novels in French. My French 1s completed their first novel in quarter three (Jean-Paul et ses bons amis). They learned about Jean-Paul and his crazy adventures to avoid cleaning his room and play soccer with his friends. We had some discussions and we focused on reading the novel for enjoyment instead of only reading to learn vocabulary (although they did build upon their already expanding vocabulary!). My French 2s are currently reading through their second novel of the year, Les nuits mystérieuses à Lyon. We have weekly discussions over the chapters we read and we learn more about French culture in context of the book each Friday. “The story is interesting to read and not as predictable as others we have read before,” one of my students said about the book. I am thrilled that they are able to read books IN FRENCH that actually keep their interest. It’s pretty cool, if I do say so myself.
I haven’t forgotten my fantastic French 3s and 4s. This year’s group of upper level French have taken on F200/250 offered by Indiana University. It has been quite a challenging years for them, but I am so proud of how much they have accomplished since day one. I am truly going to miss my seniors when they walk out of my class for the last time! As seniors completing level 3 or 4, they will receive a special pin to wear on their gowns. A picture of the pins are below. It is a great honor to complete three to four levels in French and I hope that this reminds them of all they have achieved the past three to four years! Je suis si fière de mes étudiants!
This year has been a whirlwind of ups and downs all around. As I reflect on the year, I realize how much my students have grown in their acquisition of the French language. At the start of the year, my French 1 students could only copy words off my walls. Now they are writing full length sentences with little assistance. They are reading full length articles that use complex language that I have never given to a level 1 class before. They are even able to talk about specific topics IN FRENCH! Using comprehensible input has truly changed my outlook on teaching a foreign language. I am eager to continue teaching this way and see how far my students go in their French language learning adventures! On y va!

The Physical Education Department teamed up with the Guidance Department in setting up a day to present and discuss Teen Dating Violence. Representatives from Safe Passage came in to share information on recognizing healthy and unhealthy relationships. Types of abuse can be physical, emotional, verbal, digital and sexual. Students were given ways on how to recognize this and how to help themselves, a friend, or a peer.
Detective Carl Pieczonka spoke with all health classes on Tuesday, April 30th. Carl is with the drug enforcement division for Dearborn County. Officer Pieczonka was extremely informative as well as very engaging in discussing different drug issues. He also shared some of his personal experiences in dealing with these situations/offenders. The presentation was very interactive. Students appreciated Officer Pieczonka's approachable and informative demeanor.
Science
Tim Maluvac - tmaluvac@sunmandearborn.k12.in.us
Mr. Lamb’s Biology classes dissected fetal pigs to gain a better understanding of the anatomy and physiology of mammals. The body systems of a pig are very similar to that of a human which helps students get a deeper understanding of their own body systems and how they function.
Mr. Maluvac's Anatomy & Physiology students dissected a sheep's heart, lung, and liver. They will be challenged to identify these parts and list their functions on a lab practical in a few weeks.
Social Studies
