Nurse Sarah's News!
As you help your child make new friends, learn new concepts, and try new things, there are also some steps you can take to keep them healthy. This is important not only to prevent illness in your child, but also to make sure they attend as many school days as possible. Below are some tips to help keep your child healthy and learning this school year.
Protecting Physical Health Practice good prevention Have your child wash their hands for 20 seconds frequently throughout the day. You can sing songs like “The ABCs” so that they understand how long to wash for. Demonstrate to your child how to cough or sneeze into their elbow. Also remind your child to keep their hands away from their eyes, nose and mouth. Keep your child home when they are sick. This is important for keeping other students from getting sick. Some illnesses are contagious even after your child is feeling better, so contact the school to find out when your child can return. Staying up-to-date on childhood vaccines can prevent your child from missing school days during an outbreak of a communicable disease, such as chicken pox. Know your resources Some symptoms may require a doctor’s note before your child can return to school. It can be helpful to have a doctor established in advance. If your child has an existing health condition requiring care at school, make sure you talk with their school nurse to get a plan in place. Important dates in September
Social Emotional Team
We have started teaching Second Step Curriculum in classrooms.
Second Step is a social emotional curriculum that has the goal to build success for students kindergarten through fourth grade. .”The programs help children learn social-emotional skills such as responsible decision-making, working together to solve problems, managing strong emotions, and getting along with others. These skills can help children succeed academically and socially.” The team is so excited to get to spend time each week in every classroom. Be sure to pay attention to Class Dojo for follow up HomeLink activities parents can do with their children to help reinforce these important concepts.
Feel free to read and learn more about Second Step! at https://www.secondstep.org/families

Grade Level Tid Bits
Kindergarten
Kindergarten is excited to have Grandparents Tea again this school year. This has been an annual event that invited grandparents into our classrooms to meet the teacher and classmates. You don't want to miss it on September 26th!
1st Grade
We are thrilled to kick off the year with our new reading curriculum and can't wait to see the progress our students will make! We're starting with an exciting unit on Fables, where students will learn valuable lessons through these classic stories.
We look forward to a year of growth and discovery!
2nd Grade
We are super excited about our new team this year and would like to give a warm welcome to Bre Slipke and Shirley Arnberger! Our second graders are also loving the new CKLA Amplify curriculum. Not only are we enjoying it, but the students seem to be really engaged as well.
So far, we've been reviewing first grade skills, such as vowel and consonant sounds, to help our students become more fluent readers. We've had a great time exploring Fairy Tales and are now diving into Tall Tales. The students are getting the chance to listen to quality stories and discuss the components that make up each genre.
We're currently assessing students to best serve their reading needs, and it's truly been a fun adventure for everyone! We look forward to the months ahead and watching the incredible growth our students will make.
3rd Grade
September is going to be an exciting month for our third graders! We’ll be diving into cursive handwriting, enhancing math fluency in preparation for multiplication, and exploring animal traits and how they survive in their environments. It’s going to be a fun-filled month packed with unique third-grade experiences!
Keep an eye out for the first reading calendar, which will be coming home in clear "kiwi" bags soon!
Thank you for your continued support!
4th Grade
We’re excited to share that our fourth graders are diving into a new ELA unit all about the Middle Ages! They’ll explore fascinating aspects of this historical period, and we can’t wait to see their curiosity grow. In science, we’ll be investigating the concepts of momentum and force, engaging students in hands-on activities that make learning fun and meaningful.
It’s going to be a fantastic month of discovery and learning!
P.E. with Mr. Miller
Colby Elementary is replacing the annual spring field day with a Fall Field Day.
Fall Field Day will be held on Friday, September 13th. This is a fun filled and
active day that the students look forward to every year.
During the month of September, Kindergarten through 2nd grade will focus on a
unit called “Building a Foundation” that incorporates locomotor skills and movement
concepts.
The 3rd and 4th graders will participate in a football unit. The students will
work on throwing, receiving, punting, and flag pulling skills.
Looking forward to another fun filled school year!
Mr. Miller
Harmony with Ms. Hockett
We’ve had a wonderful start to the school year, establishing our routines and diving into some exciting music lessons! Kindergarten through Third Grades are currently working on rhythms and exploring our classroom instruments. Meanwhile, Fourth Grade students will soon begin learning the fundamentals of playing the recorder.
I’m looking forward to a fun and musical year ahead!
Mrs. Austin & the ESOL Team
The ESOL Department has been busy supporting our students in the classroom! Our three dedicated ESOL aides are working hard to help students navigate the English-speaking world, and we’re grateful for their efforts. Miss Abby, Mr. Martin, and Miss Savannah are providing invaluable support at the Grade School, and we feel fortunate to have them on our team!
Thank you for your continued support, and we look forward to a successful year ahead.
Becoming 'Monet' with Ms. Miller
I hope you all had a fantastic summer!
I enjoyed plenty of sunshine, pool days, and, of course, creating art! I was thrilled to see so many wonderful comments about your children's artwork displayed at the Prairie Museum and the 4H building at the Fair.
If your child’s art was kept over the summer, please feel free to stop by my classroom to pick it up. I’m excited for a year full of creativity, fun, and imagination.
Thank you for your continued support, and I look forward to another great year with your young artists!
Library News from Mrs. Brown
Kindergarten, First, and Second Grades will enjoy both Activity Days and Book Days in the library! Activity Days will be on either Monday or Tuesday, depending on whether it's an "A" week or "B" week. During Activity Days, we'll read a book and engage in a related activity that ties into our lesson. Book Days will be on either Wednesday or Thursday, when students can check out one book from the library. They will have the book for a week and can exchange it for a new storybook on their next Book Day.
Third and Fourth Grades will start checking out two library books in September! One book will be their "reading" book, which is a chapter book at their reading level. The second book will be a "fun" book, which can be either a graphic novel or a nonfiction book. Alternatively, students may choose to check out two reading books.
Coming Soon: The Fall Scholastic Book Fair is scheduled for October 21-25. Stay tuned for more details!
