Manitou Springs High School
Mustang News - September 13 , 2024
From The Principal
It has been an exceptional week at MSHS. During our Professional Learning Communities on Late Start Wednesday, it was so inspiring to work with staff on developing ambitious goals that center student achievement. Additionally, it has been powerful to focus on how we can continue to strengthen relationships, deep learning, and opportunity so that all of our students are supported in ultimately excelling in their postsecondary pathways and contributing meaningfully to a dynamic world!
Also, congratulations to Elisa K. and Keyaira M. for both breaking the existing girls cross country school record! Elissa is now our new school record holder!
As a reminder, we have a Staff Work Day on Friday, 9/20; thus, students do not have classes. Also, we are really looking forward to Homecoming Week: 9/23-9/28.
Enjoy your weekend!

A Word From The Counselors
School counselors Mr. Lewis (last names A-K) and Mrs. Strupp (last names L-Z) met with all 9th grade advisory classes to introduce ourselves to freshmen and explain our roles (Academic, College and Career, Social/Emotional support). We explained how to request to see us using the electronic request online or via the iPad in the counseling center. We also reviewed MSHS graduation requirements which are below:
Class of 2024+ MSHS Graduation Requirements
English – 8 credits
Math – 6 credits
Science – 6 credits
Social Studies – 6 credits
P.E. – 3 credits
Health – 1 credit
Fine Arts/Practical Arts – 6 credits

A reminder to all students and families that there are 3 components to earning your diploma from MSHS, these include 1) Passing the 54 required credits with at least a 60% 2) Having a documented ICAP (we use Naviance) and 3) Demonstrating mastery in both English and Math via the CO Menu of Options. Please ask your 9th grader about this advisory lesson. Please contact your students' school counselor if you have any questions about your students' graduation status. Chris Lewis: Clewis@mssd14.org (last names A-K) Alisha Strupp: astrupp@mssd14.org (last names L-Z) We will be in Senior Advisories starting next week to discuss Post-secondary Options/ Naviance and the College Application Process and walk them through Navaince.
From The Art Department
"This summer I had the amazing opportunity to go to MCAD’s summer college program. While there I took the painting program and learned more about color theory and painting from life. Even though I have been painting for many years I learned a lot of new things. Any student who is considering going to college to study art should try this program, it gives you the opportunity to experience it before you make a decision." - Madison S
A Word From Social Studies
Can it get any better? It's an election year and the students in Government class have been engaged in the election process, at the highest level. So far students have taken a political view survey revealing which political party they lean towards, created their own electoral college result map based on past election results and current issues, and developed their own political platform based on their personal issues of importance. Mr. Brown has been overwhelmed with how much the students are engaged in class and their interest in the politics of today. Great job students!
Come And Learn About Being A Phlebotomist!
Hello Students!
Have you ever had your iron levels checked? Or wondered what your lactate level is during a hard workout? Or what your white blood cell count is when you have a major infection? Come and learn about being a phlebotomist -- the technician who draws your blood as pain free as possible so that these labs can be identified. This job pays $20/hr or as a full time job around $40,000 a year and only requires a certificate of training. Come learn about this pathway for a summer job or a career starter on Thursday Sept 19th in the media center from 9-10. You need to sign up with the QR code listed on flyers found around the building or the Google doc here. Please email or see Mrs. Trainor for questions. There will be snacks.
Healthcare presentations will happen each month this semester so check out the link to sign up.

Game Club has started at MSHS! Game Club will be on Tuesdays at lunch in Mr. Gillard's room (Room 9). Come by and bring friends for your weekly time of non-digital fun. There are groups playing card, board, and role-playing games.

Save The Date!
After gathering community input, we’re excited to announce that the Manitou Springs School Board of Education has officially approved renaming our stadium "George Rykovich Stadium" in honor of our legendary coach, George Rykovich!
Join us for a special dedication ceremony during our varsity football game on Friday, October 11th at 7 PM as we celebrate Coach Rykovich's incredible legacy. We want to pack the stands to honor the man who led the Mustangs to 222 victories and two state championships (1987 & 1990) during his 36 years as head coach.
Coach Rykovich was also formally inducted into the Colorado High School Activities Association Hall of Fame on January 23, 2023—an honor only two Mustangs have received.
Let’s come together as a community to honor Coach Rykovich’s extraordinary contributions to our school and the state. More details will be shared soon—stay tuned! Be part of this historic moment and cheer on the Mustangs!
