Notes From The Desk Of Mr. Herman
Welcome to the 2024-25 School Year
2024 Sunflower League Gymnastics Champs!!!
Notes From the Principal's Desk
October 18, 2024
Olathe North families,
Welcome to the ONHS Admin Corner: Notes From the Desk of Mr. Herman.
Thank you to all the parents that attended Parent/Teacher Conferences. If you were unable to attend and would like to visit with a teacher please feel free to reach out and schedule a time or shoot them an email. Also, please keep an eye on StudentVUE and ParentVUE to keep up with your students grades.
Speaking of grades, remember that GPA is considered, in high school, by semester grades. No matter what the 1st quarter grade was your student can improve their standing in the class with their effort 2nd quarter. Please make sure you understand how each teacher determines the semester grade. Some will average 1st and 2nd quarter grades and other teachers keep a running grade for both quarters. Have this discussion with your student if they do not know I recommend checking with the teacher.
Attendance, Grades and Behavior are the three keys to success in high school. Now that first quarter is over the administration will be pulling data in these three areas. Students that are not meeting the minimum expectations in any of these areas, my administration will be reaching out either through email, phone calls, US mail or home visits. Please be on the look out for these communications. There could be an expectation of an in-person meeting to ensure that we team together as a school and a family to make sure your student is successful.
**See the 2nd Quarter Attendance Challenge below. It is more than attendance, but is in place to motivate our kids!!
A Principal's Rant!!! After the last principal's rant about senior skip day I received many compliments and comments of support. So lets keep the principal's rant alive. I have always lived by the words that 10 minutes early is 5 minutes late. Being on time is respectful and responsible. When you are late you do not respect the time of the people around you. Getting to school on time seems to be a perpetual issue. Olathe North has a tardy policy in place that gives students 3 opportunities to be late without consequences. Which I recommend saving for the start of the school day. Our policy does state they need to be at a tardy table by 7:50am, anything after 10 minutes is an absence. I am challenging our community to take a closer look at your morning routine. What can you do to support your student? Can you make them go to bed earlier? Can you create a new process that will inhibit better habits to be to school earlier? Lets help our students understand the importance of not just being on time, but being early.
We have a lot of events that occur at the beginning of the school year, please make sure that you are always checking https://www.sunflowerleague.org/g5-bin/client.cgi?G5genie=403 Sunflowerleague.org to see the building live calendar. I will also try to get many of the events on important date information below.

AP Exam Registration
Hello!
You are receiving this email because your student is enrolled in one or more AP classes and is eligible to take AP Exams this May to potentially earn college credit for those courses. Please read through all of this email carefully, as there is a lot of important information! Registration will close Monday, Nov 4th, so we are a little over a month away! The attachment gives step-by-step directions for registration and payment and includes QR codes for the websites needed. The AP Exam schedule is also included in the attachment.
Exam registration and payment requires 3 steps:
- Join AP Classroom for each AP class you are taking
- Indicate “Yes” or “No” for the exam for each class. The default is set to “Undecided” https://apstudents.collegeboard.org/
- Log into Touch Base and add each exam you are taking to your cart and complete payment. You will be charged $104/exam. https://ks-olathe.intouchreceipting.com/
A few important things to note:
*If you are on Free/Reduced Lunch, you still need to follow all 3 of the above steps, however you will not be charged for the exam(s).
*If you choose “Yes” for an exam, but do not pay by Nov 4th, no exams will be ordered for you. You will have to re-add them with a $50 late fee.
*If you miss the deadline and wish to register after Nov 4th, you will be charged a $50 late fee, making the cost of each exam $154.
*If you register/pay for an exam and later decide you no longer wish to take the exam, you will only be eligible for a partial refund of $54 ($104 minus the $50 cancellation fee)
*If you are on a 504 or IEP and have testing accommodations, you must notify me that you want to apply for those accommodations through your College Board account. The deadline to apply for accommodations is January 24th, 2025

$5 Gift Card Drive
& 2nd Quarter Attendance Challenge
As a way to celebrate our students that are recognized by staff with a positive referral, students on spirit days and student section heroes we like to give the kids $5 gift cards to QT, Starbucks, McDonald's, Subway, etc... I am not allowed to use district funds to purchase gift cards, so I am reaching out to the supportive Olathe North community to request $5 gift cards, cash donations or larger amounts to support the 2nd Quarter Attendance Challenge Prizes. Please feel free to swing by the front office and drop off any donations directed to Mr. Herman. I truly appreciate the support of our community to celebrate our kids. Thanks to this amazing community!!!!
With the 2nd Quarter Attendance Challenge we also need donations of prizes students aspire to win. Air Pods, Flat Screen TV, larger $$$ gift cards. If you have any questions or can get me a lead on any of these items please reach out either through email or call the school. jhermanon@olatheschools.org

Class of 2025 FASFA Information
We are trying something brand new this year that could result in you winning Airpods, an Amazon Fire tablet, or a Kindle!
So what do you have to do? Create an FSA ID!
To get a head start on the FAFSA for this year, every Senior and their parents are encouraged to create their FSA ID as soon as possible! You will use your FSA ID to log-in and complete the 2025-2026 FAFSA when it is open. If you are a parent or a student that wants to create your FSA ID at home, you can do so by visiting StudentAid.gov.
Please note that if you are a parent who already has an FSA ID from when you or one of your older children went to college, you DO NOT and CANNOT create a new one. If you do not remember the log-in information for your old account, follow the steps to recover that information!
I have created my FSA ID and so have my parents. Now what? Send screenshots that show you have created these accounts to Mr. Van Winkle at lvanwinkle@olatheschools.org (use the subject line: FSA ID Raffle Entry) or stop by his office to show him in person. For every FSA ID that is created between you and your parents, you will be entered into the raffle.
*Maximum of THREE entries allowed! Entries will be deemed eligible for the raffle if received by Friday, September 27th at 3:00 PM! Names will be drawn the next week!*
I have a special circumstance that prevents me from getting three entries – what do I do? We know that every family is different and there may be reasons that you are unable to have three entries that are completely out of your control – you live with a legal guardian, you do not have contact with one or both parents, you live in a single-parent home, etc. If you know that you have a special circumstance that does not allow three entries, reach out to Mr. Van Winkle and we will work together to see what we can do!
If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to Mr. Van Winkle at lvanwinkle@olatheschools.org! Good luck!
