The Fence and the Gate
“Showing up is not about being perfect. It’s about being present, consistent, and kind—even when it’s hard.”
— Unknown
There was once a small village nestled between rolling hills and winding rivers. The people who lived there were kind, but like many communities, they didn’t always see eye to eye. Over time, disagreements over small things—a dog barking, a fence line, a forgotten “hello”—began to grow.
Neighbors started building taller fences, thinking it would give them peace. What they didn’t realize was, the more fences they built, the less they knew each other.
One day, a strong storm rolled in. Trees fell, rivers rose, and the power went out. The people found themselves outside, trying to clear debris, help the elderly, and care for children. They couldn’t do it alone.
Something remarkable happened.
One by one, people began cutting gates into their fences—not to remove the boundary, but to make space for someone else. They passed through those gates to help, to listen, to lend a hand. The fences were still there, but the gates made all the difference.
After the storm passed, many of those gates remained. They reminded the village that being on the same team didn’t mean being the same—it meant being there for each other. It meant showing up when it counted.
We’re Better When We Show Up
At Newaygo Public Schools, we are a team—and more than that, we are a family. We won’t always agree. But the real measure of community is not how alike we are, but how willing we are to show up for each other—especially when it's hard.
Let’s keep building gates. Let’s listen more, assume the best, and remember that our kids are watching how we treat one another.
We don’t need perfection. We just need presence. That’s how we move forward.

Mondays Well Spent – Thanks to You!
Dear Newaygo Families,
As we wrap up our Late Start Mondays for the 2024-25 school year, I want to extend a heartfelt thank you for your continued support. These weekly PLC (Professional Learning Community) sessions have allowed our educators to collaborate, align curriculum, and grow professionally—all with the goal of improving student success.
From implementing Heggerty Reading & Writing and Bridges Math, to piloting upper elementary programs and strengthening our Guaranteed & Viable Curriculum, the progress made this year has been remarkable. We've also deepened our commitment to Capturing Kids’ Hearts, PBIS, and grade-level and departmental alignment. Your support—especially with our Late Start drop-off option—has been instrumental, and we’re proud that many families took advantage of this resource.
Thank you for partnering with us as we strive to provide the best for our students.
#BetterTogether.
With gratitude,
Ben Gilpin

Calendar Dates:
Dear Newaygo Families,
I hope this message finds you and your loved ones well.
As we approach April 18th, I want to take a moment to share a note about that day on our school calendar. Friday, April 18th is a half-day of school for students. We also recognize that this day holds significance for many in our community, as it is Good Friday.
At Newaygo Public Schools, we are mindful of the many beliefs, values, and traditions represented in our district. Our aim, always, is to honor those beliefs while also balancing the needs of the instructional calendar. Sometimes these goals align perfectly—and other times, like this one, they may overlap in ways that present a challenge.
As parents and guardians, you know what is best for your family. We absolutely respect your choice to determine whether or not your child attends school on this day.
Please know this decision was not made without care. We remain committed to creating a school environment that is respectful and understanding of all of our families. Your continued partnership helps us achieve that goal, and I am grateful for the trust you place in our schools.
With appreciation,
Ben Gilpin

Playing the Game .... Or Changing it Together
Recently, I listened to a podcast by my friend Danny Bauer, a nationally recognized educational leader and author. In the episode titled “Playing the Game by Your Own Rules”, Danny shared a powerful story from his time as a student.
He recalled writing a poem as his final essay—pushing boundaries, thinking creatively, and expressing himself in a unique way. But instead of being met with curiosity or encouragement, his teacher saw his effort as defiant. He even felt she disliked boys, and he knew what he had written wasn’t going to be “good enough” in her eyes. As Danny reflected, it wasn’t about learning—it was about playing the game of school. He knew the rules: conform, comply, and check the boxes. His story stuck with me.
Because the truth is, school should never feel like a game our kids are trying to survive. It should be a place where they are known, heard, and supported—not where they’re navigating rules that feel disconnected from who they are.
At Newaygo, we believe that home and school are not on opposite teams—we are partners. And like any strong partnership, communication, support, and trust are key. When families and educators work together—truly together—we build stronger relationships, deepen understanding, and eliminate the feeling that students must “play the game” to succeed.
I choose to believe that every parent, every guardian, and every educator wants better for our kids. Let’s continue showing up with open minds and hearts, forging stronger connections, and reminding our students that their voice, their creativity, and their uniqueness all belong here.
Together, we can change the rules.
Together, we are #BetterTogether.
Giving Thanks...
Spring brings renewal, sunshine, and the perfect opportunity to say thank you to the incredible people who make our schools thrive. Whether it’s a kind word, a handwritten note, or a simple smile, small gestures of gratitude go a long way. At Newaygo, we are proud of the dedicated staff and volunteers who serve our students each day—and we encourage our families to join us in celebrating them!
Here are the upcoming appreciation days this spring:
📅 April 2 – Paraprofessional Appreciation Day
📚 April 4 – School Librarian Appreciation Day
🎓 April 7–11 – Assistant Principal Appreciation Week
💙 April 21–25 – Public School Volunteer Week
🗂️ April 23 – Administrative Professionals Day
👩🏫 May 1 – School Principal Day
🍎 May 2 – School Lunch Hero Day
✏️ May 5–9 – Teacher Appreciation Week
🩺 May 7 – School Nurse Day
Let’s remind our staff and support teams just how much they matter. A heartfelt “thank you” can make someone’s entire season.
Testing Season is Here - Let's Give Our Best!
As we enter April and May, our students will participate in state assessments such as MSTEP, Mi-Access, and the SAT. While these tests are part of the academic journey, we want to be clear: our students are more than a number. A test score does not define them—and it never will.
At Newaygo, we believe in giving our best not because of a score, but because of who we are. Giving your best is about pride. It’s about character. It’s about showing up and rising to the moment with courage and care.
💡 Families can help by supporting healthy habits at home:
- 🌙 Prioritize rest – A full night’s sleep helps students stay focused and alert.
- 🥗 Eat a healthy breakfast – Nutrition fuels the brain and body.
- ❤️ Minimize conflict and stress – A calm morning and encouraging words can make a big difference.
Together, let’s remind our students that their effort matters—and that we believe in them every step of the way.
What's New in Newaygo?
💙 A Story of Courage and Community
This past week, our Newaygo community was reminded of the strength that comes from unity. One of our recent graduates, Lyda, faced an immense personal challenge—and stood tall with grace, courage, and determination. What’s been equally powerful is how our Newaygo family has rallied around her with love and support. This is what it means to be #BetterTogether.
🏗️ Bond Project Webpage Coming Soon
In the coming weeks, Newaygo Public Schools will launch a dedicated webpage for updates on Phase 1 and Phase 2 of our Bond Project. This will give families and community members a clear view of the progress and planning taking place across our district.

💙 Congratulations to Mrs. Lisa Piccard – Newaygo’s 2025 iCare Award Recipient!
Some people leave a lasting mark not through recognition, but through quiet dedication and the countless ways they care. This year, we’re proud to announce that Mrs. Lisa Piccard has been named Newaygo’s iCare Award winner, a recognition given by NC RESA to individuals who go above and beyond in service to students, staff, and community.
Lisa has spent over 25 years in education and is so much more than a high school counselor. She’s a mentor, advocate, career advisor, scheduler, PBIS leader, NHS sponsor—and the list goes on. She supports students through life’s toughest moments, organizes key events behind the scenes, and leads with heart in everything she does.
If you know Lisa, you know this honor couldn’t be more fitting. Her compassion, humility, and strength truly represent the best of Newaygo.
Please take a moment to congratulate her. We are lucky to have her.
