A Message from Marcie
Dear Families,
Thank you for a wonderful week and for your continued partnership. Many of you took the time to complete the Goals and Concerns Form, which offers families a way to share their perspective on class placement for the 2025-26 school year. We value your input, and I appreciate the thoughtfulness reflected in your responses.
As I’ve shared in previous communications, the class placement process is incredibly complex. Above all, our goal is to create balanced classrooms—both academically and behaviorally—so that every student has the opportunity to thrive.
This year, we noticed an increase in separation requests. While we understand and respect your insights, these types of requests present a challenge. As a smaller school with fewer class sections, it becomes increasingly difficult to honor multiple separation requests without compromising the overall balance of our classrooms.
Please know that our team will be working thoughtfully and carefully over the next several weeks to make the best decisions for all students. With the rise in separation requests, it is likely that not every preference can be honored, and your child may be placed with a peer you hoped they’d be separated from. In some cases, our teachers may recommend separation based on their observations, but even then, it is not always feasible to accommodate every situation.
It’s also important to remember that learning to navigate challenging peer dynamics is a valuable life skill. Whether in future classrooms, on teams, or in the workplace, we don’t always have control over who we work or learn with. These experiences help build resilience, empathy, and flexibility—traits that serve our students well beyond the classroom.
Thank you for your understanding and support as we work toward placements that prioritize the growth and success of all students. And don’t worry—I’ll be sure to send another friendly reminder about this before we release class lists in August! :)
As always, thank you for your partnership!
-Marcie

RSVP for VIP Day!
Dear South Park Families,
We are excited that South Park will once again be hosting VIP (Very Important Penguin) Day on Tuesday, May 20th and Thursday, May 22nd 2025!
Each student will be able to invite one special guest (family/adult 16+ with state ID) to visit the classroom for thirty minutes to participate in a fun activity at school!
VIP Day Details:
Please RSVP before Friday, May 9th to sign up for VIP Day. Please click the link for your grade level at the bottom of this letter. You will need to fill this form out for each child who will have a VIP.
VIPs MUST have a DRIVER’S LICENSE or STATE ID. We cannot let you in without it.
We recommend that VIPs stop by the South Park office prior to VIP Day
(Thursday 5/15, Friday 5/16, or Monday 5/19) to have their IDs scanned through the school’s visitor management system. VIPs can have their IDs scanned on the day of the event, but they will need to wait in line and they may risk the chance of being late.ONLY VIPs who have signed up in advance will be allowed to attend.
The VIP should arrive through the school's front center doors at least 10 minutes before the grade's specific time to sign in.
If your VIP cannot make the event or changes need to be made to who is coming as a VIP, please contact your child’s teacher prior to their assigned date so we know who to expect or we can make arrangements to ensure all students have a special person available!

It’s almost Earth Day! April 22nd marks 55 years of celebrating this holiday, which was founded by a senator from Wisconsin in 1970. The inaugural celebration led to increased awareness of environmental issues and the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency. Here are some great books to teach your little penguins to care for our home, the Earth!
The Water Walker This is the story of a determined Ojibwe Grandmother, and her great love for water. She walks around all of the Great Lakes to raise awareness of our need to protect water for future generations, and for all life on the planet. Her example inspires and challenges us all to take up our responsibility to protect our water and our planet for all generations.
One Plastic Bag Discover the inspiring true story of Isatou Ceesay, an African woman who started a recycling movement to combat the pollution caused by plastic bags in her community. She began to collect the plastic bags and recycle them into something new. Her efforts not only helped to clean up the environment, but also provided income for women in her community who had been struggling to make ends meet.
Plastic: Past, Present, and Future We all know plastic use is a big problem, but when did we start using plastic? And why? Start a journey through the life cycle of plastic to learn how plastics are produced, the many uses of plastics throughout the last century, how our plastic use has spiralled out of control, and some ideas for what we can do about it. Here's the whole story about plastic- filled with information to empower children to make choices that will affect their future.
Let’s Eat: Sustainable Food for a Hungry Planet All the food you eat, whether it's an apple or a steak or a chocolate-coated cricket, has a story. Let's Eat uncovers the secret lives of our groceries, exploring alternative - and sometimes bizarre - farm technology and touring gardens up high on corporate rooftops and down low in military-style bunkers beneath city streets. Packed with interesting and sometimes startling facts on agriculture around the world, Let's Eat reveals everything from the size of the biggest farm in the world to how many pesticides are in a single grape to which insect people prefer to eat.
Upcoming Erin's Law Presentations
Erin’s Law (House Bill 6193) was signed by Governor Pat Quinn on January 24, 2013. This law requires schools to implement an age-appropriate sexual assault and abuse awareness and prevention curriculum for grades Pre-K through 12. District 109 partners with Childhood Victories, Inc., an organization founded by Victor Pacini who is a motivational speaker and a survivor of sexual abuse. Speakers from Childhood Victories, Inc. provide programming for our students that teaches them basic skills to keep them safe from dangerous or abusive situations. The program, Be Seen and Heard 2.0, is developmentally appropriate, interactive, aligned with learning standards, and will cover the following topics:
Distinguishing safe from unsafe touches
Safety rules at home and school
Saying “NO”
Secrets
It’s not the child’s fault if someone touches them
Telling a trusted adult
The staff from Childhood Victories, Inc. will be presenting to all of our elementary students in Deerfield. South Park students will participate on Thursday, April 24th.
Requests to Opt-Out: If you prefer that your child opt-out of this prevention education session, please email your child’s principal by TODAY, Thursday, April 17.

News From Early Learners
In our Early Learners program, full-day classroom students have been busy learning about plants—watching them grow and using writing skills to label their parts. They’ve also been practicing “how-to” writing, explaining steps for making bunny handprint projects, planting seeds, and even creating matzo snack recipes. We’ve recently shifted from morning-only carpet time to full-day participation, and students are also preparing for our upcoming music show. In math, they’ve been playing a variety of games, including outdoor subtraction with chalk. In the three-year-old classrooms, students are exploring plants through books, songs, and seed observations, and have been creating and selling flower arrangements in dramatic play.
This week in Grady's Group, students talked about the importance of listening when someone has a problem. Listening helps them understand what's wrong and figure out how to help. They read “I Have a Little Problem,” Said the Bear by Heinz Janisch and Silke Leffler, where the grown-ups kept interrupting the bear instead of listening—making the bear feel frustrated. Students learned that being a good friend means truly listening and offering thoughtful solutions. Not listening can feel “scratchy,” just like it did in the story.
Dr. Grady will be doing a presentation on Erin's Law on Tuesday, April 29 during Grady's Group. Erin's Law (House Bill 6193) was signed by Governor Pat Quinn on January 24, 2013. This law requires schools to implement an age-appropriate sexual assault and abuse awareness and prevention curriculum for grades Pre-K through 12. The presentation she will use is very much geared toward our youngest learners and will cover the following topics:
- Distinguishing safe from unsafe touches
- Saying “NO”
- Telling a trusted adult
