Team Berlin Update 16
December 6, 2024

Week 15: December 6, 2024
Save the Date
12/7 -12/8: Deal Winter Market (see below for more info.)
12/20: Last day of school before break (YES WE HAVE ASSIGNMENTS ON THIS DAY)
Absences
Gentle reminder that our curriculum moves at a set pace and with that, students who are absent will have to find a way to make up assignments outside of class. Furthermore, any student traveling over seas should be aware that Canvas does not work overseas. This means they will have to download their assignments in advance, or have a friend email them the work.
Thank you for your support in this.
How to Get & Stay Caught Up with Assignments:
Let Term 2 be "WS" free for Team Berlin students! There is no need to have missing assignments with the numerous opportunities for extra help. Decide what works best for your student. Given that two of these options are on Thursday, it might be best to set aside time each Wednesday evening to take a look at Aspen with your student and make a plan for success.
Lunch Recess Support: Both Mr. Gawthrop & Mr. Brown make themselves available daily for extra help or just time and space in getting assignments done.
Thursday Homework Club (3:20-4:20) Team Berlin teachers alternate hosting this one-hour afterschool on Thursdays.
Thursday, December 12: Ballentine (W101)
Friday, December 19: Trenkle (W104)
Thursday Academic Advising: During Advisory students have the opportunity to work on assignments in their Advisory class or may arrange to visit a particular class and teacher to complete an assignment.

Earth Science with Ms. Ballantine
Hello Scientists!
This past week, students explored landslides and topographic maps, learning about how the Earth's surface changes and how we can represent these changes on two-dimensional maps. Next week, we will conclude our Rock Transformation Unit. Students will have a summative assessment covering weathering, erosion, and deposition on Wed. Dec 11th . To help prepare, they should complete the study guide, which is due on Wed, December 11th , the day of the assessment. Students can also review using the following Blooket links below (also on Canvas). Additionally, on Fri. Dec 13th, students will take Roots Quiz 2.5, this week’s words are listed below. The last two days of next week will be spent starting off our mini Mars Geology unit, taking our rock transformation knowledge to space!

This week students worked on division of fractions and related real-world application. In the coming week, students will continue working on dividing complex fractions and real-world application of the concept in taking a Formative Assessment. Included in our virtual classroom is a link to a portion of Illustrative Mathematics website curriculum dedicated to allowing parents to give support of current topics from home. Students should take advantage of their time off from school and complete and/or redo any outstanding non passing assignments
Math7
This week students continued with calculating mathematical relationships connected to circles. In the coming week, students will continue working on calculating circle relationships and finish the RCT/End of Unit assessments on the current concepts. included in our virtual classroom will be a link to a portion of Illustrative Mathematics dedicated to allowing parents to give support of current topics from home. Students should take advantage of their time off from school and complete and/or redo any outstanding non-passing assignments.
Language Arts with Ms. Byrns & Mr. Gawthrop
This week we started Tuck Everlasting. In class, students were about to read Chapters 1-6. With this reading students focused on finding the mood of a scene and then on writing objective summaries of the events. You can see how we use the “5Ws” to construct short summaries in the weekly homework page students should have in their red folders.
Additionally, students began working on short grammar lessons using Quill (a program they access through Clever). Before Thanksgiving Break, students completed a diagnostic and l then assigned lessons based on individual student needs. Students should complete 10 of these lessons before Winter Break. Most lessons take about 5-10 minutes to complete and there is some time in class to do this work.
Next week we will continue reading and practice constructing literary response paragraphs using the RACE model (Restate the question, Answer the Question, Cite Textual Evidence, Explain Evidence).
Congrats to Owen, Alex, and Sofia J. for completing the 40 Book Challenge! I am so impressed with these readers! To see what else Team Berlin students are reading, check out the Term 2 book recommendations HERE.

Geography with Ms. Trenkle
Congratulations to all Team Berlin students who attended our Three Religions Trip on Monday. Students represented themselves well and asked great questions and participated well! For students that were absent, they can take a virtual trip of the three sites by going to Canvas>Geography>Assignments>Three Religions VirtualVisit. The virtual visit should be submitted at the start of class on Tuesday.
On Wednesday, Ms. Eva from the German Embassy shared her day with us, making comparisons between Berlin (in Germany) and DC! She also handmade salt dough ornaments for students to color and keep, as well as gave them a pocket map of Germany! We look forward to her next visit at the start of February! Thank you Ms. Eva!
We continued to build on our knowledge of the three Abrahamic religions through reading. Next week we will discuss how Jerusalem is a holy city for all three religions. We will begin to write our summative essay in class.
Students turned in CEA #8 on Friday and CEA #9 is due on Friday, 12/13. It’s exciting to see their writing and analysis getting stronger! Keep up the good work Team Berlin!
Congratulations to 5th period who earned their incentive award this week!
We continue to hear from community partners who we wrote our Community Action Letters! Ezra received a letter from Robert White, DDOT visited us before the Thanksgiving break, and ANC Representatives Courtney Carlson and Mitchell Baer came by to meet with students who wrote them this week.
We also have a ton of photos to share! Please find Team Berlin photos of our students in action here: https://www.icloud.com/sharedalbum/#B1g5IRuBxGAvG9 It will be updated as we go along!
Thank you for continuing to send in postcards! We had a small break from reading them in class due to the busy schedule but will commence next week! Really awesome and thank you for spreading the word to friends and family! 😊
I’ve been meaning to share, and have told the kids I would—on Orientation Day students chose a song or songs to include on our Team Playlist. We listen to this playlist sometimes while we work in small groups. The Playlist can be found here: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6XGJMmooyuna2fwFQ9pj9A?si=416e41ad228f4c11
