Maplewood Memo
May 15, 2024
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Greetings Maplewood Families,
I sure am looking forward to the Maplewood Carnival tomorrow! The money raised from this fun community event goes directly to hiring Reading Results for Maplewood. Reading Results is a non-profit program that hires adults from the school community, trains them and then provides students with reading tutoring one to two students at a time. This year has been our first year with Reading Results and we have been able to meet so many additional students’ needs. First grade, for example, runs 24 small reading groups in just 40 minutes three days a week. This is incredible that we can provide this much targeted tutoring for our young readers. So, please buy those carnival tickets this Friday!
PTA is working on filling their board for the 24-25 school year. They are still looking for a secretary and also a DEI (diversity, equity and inclusion) coordinator. Please consider reaching out to PTA if you are able to help. Maplewood simply wouldn’t be as special a place without the help from our parent volunteers on PTA.
Your current ballot will include a vote to pass a levy. There is more information below about this for your reference. HERE is a one-pager overview. Please be sure to vote and help our schools.
Every year we have a volunteer tea. This year it is going to be on June 3rd from 7:50 - 8:30 in the library. If you are a volunteer, join us for some tea and treats to thank you for your generous gift of time. Please RSVP HERE for the Volunteer Tea.
Lastly, but certainly not least, our Maplewood End-of-Year picnic is around the corner. Please mark your calendars for June 10th starting at 5:00. We will have a food and dessert truck. Our Maplewood Band will make an appearance and there will be live music from a local parent band, Sefferaine, from 6-7pm. This is an event you won’t want to miss. So, pack a picnic, grab a blanket, and join us!
Before we know it, summer will be here. Be sure to soak up these last few days of school.
If you have any questions or concerns, be sure to let me know. I can’t fix it if I don’t know about it.
Thanks all,
Kit

Successful School Survey
Each year, we gather student, staff, and family feedback through the Successful Schools Survey. The results help our school understand the needs of your students, staff, and families, as well as support the development of your school continuous improvement plans (SCIP). We want to hear from you! Your voice matters! On May 6th, the survey window opens. Be on the lookout for emails and texts with the link to the survey. Thanks!

Levy
Please visit this website or check out this one-pager to learn more about the levy vote. This letter details how it would affect Maplewood specifically. Please be sure to vote. Thank you for your support.
Cafeteria/Nutrition
A reminder that breakfast and lunch is now FREE to ALL students at Maplewood! If your child has not had a meal with me before, I can walk them through the process. Students are very helpful showing new kids how to go through the line also. Even if they have breakfast at home, they can get breakfast here and use it for snack later. Please remember, milk is NOT free unless getting the whole meal.
As we near the end of the school year I will need to be using up things in my freezer. So, there may be days when I serve 20 burgers, for example, with whatever is the main menued item that day. If the main menu is different, I will try to get notice out. I just letting you know there may be days when I have small amounts to offer. Not everyone will get that offer but everyone will still get the menued options.
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Thanks for your support.

Lastly, please purchase punch cards or raffle basket tickets at the Maplewood Store or check in with Ms. Cunningham if your family needs support to attend the Carnival. Ida B Wells Production of The Lightning Thief
Now playing at Ida B. Wells-Barnett HS: The Lightning Thief!
As the half-blood son of a Greek god, Percy Jackson has newly-discovered powers he can't control, a destiny he doesn't want, and a mythology textbook's worth of monsters on his trail. When Zeus's master lightning bolt is stolen and Percy becomes the prime suspect, he has to find and return the bolt to prove his innocence and prevent a war between the gods. But to succeed on his quest, Percy will have to do more than catch the thief. He must travel to the Underworld and back; solve the riddle of the Oracle, which warns him of betrayal by a friend; and come to terms with the father who abandoned him. Adapted from the best-selling book The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan and featuring a thrilling original rock score, The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical is an action-packed mythical adventure "worthy of the gods" (Time Out New York).
The Lightning Thief performs May 16-18 on the Mainstage of the IBWHS Cosgrove Auditorium, and is appropriate for ALL AGES.
