Principals Message:
Kia ora whaanau,
Welcome back to Term 3. We hope you all enjoyed some family time and the students are back refreshed and ready from another packed term. Last term we finished with a fantastic positivity afternoon. It really highlighted the uniqueness of the school with the Year 1-13 students interacting positively with each other and enjoying spending time together. This term we will continue the focus with the students working towards another goal as well as individual, small group, and whole class rewards.
This term we have conferences in week three. They are a great time to get everyone around the table and have discussions about learning. If you can’t meet on those days, please contact the teachers directly to arrange another time. They can also meet via zoom or a phone call if that is more convenient.
We have a teacher only day on the 10th of August. This is one of the assigned days for our NCEA teachers to receive development in the upcoming changes to NCEA. The Junior teachers will be working with our Mathematics mentors.
This term we also have cross country, our culture and art evening, and ag day. The dates for these events can be found in the school calendar on the app or website.
We have welcomed two new teachers to our staff this term. Demelza Zandbergen joins the SLT as Deputy Principal of student achievement, Year 1-6 Pastoral care, and SENCO. Miriam Curnow joins the Mathematics department. Welcome to them and their families.

General Reminders:
It is great to have had a good break over the school holidays and all our students seem refreshed and ready for a great term ahead. Given that it is the start of the term we want to send out a couple of reminders to keep the positive behaviour going.
Uniform
Having a school uniform is a really important way for us to show whanaungatanga, and demonstrate that our students are part of the OAS team. We do have a school uniform guideline and policy (you can access this via the school website) and it is greatly appreciated when whanau support their children to be the best they can! At this time of the year with the cold and the wet, it can be tempting for students to bring in non-uniform sweat-shirts, jackets and shoes. We do understand that at times there will be accidents or misplacements of items, and in this case just send in a note with your child explaining the reason for the non-uniform item. Here is a reminder of our uniform policy:
Year 1 to Year 8 for all seasons:
- Royal blue school polo shirt
- Navy blue long pants with school logo
- or Navy blue shorts
or Navy blue culottes (girls)
School sweatshirt (royal blue) - PE Top (royal blue, or house colours) optional
- All blacks shoes or sandals
(No Jandals or boots to be worn) - Black or navy socks to be worn with shoes
(no football socks or similar) - School hat / cap or plain black or navy blue cap (compulsory in summer)
- School Beanie or plain black or navy blue beanie (optional, winter only)
- School Jacket (optional)
Year 9 to 13 for all seasons:
- White school shirt or blouse or royal blue polo shirt
- Navy blue long pants with school logo
or navy blue shorts
or navy blue skirt - School sweatshirt (royal blue)
or Navy blue fleece jacket (years 11 to 13) - black or navy ankle socks to be worn with shoes
or black stockings (girls)
(no football socks or similar) - All black shoes or sandals
(no jandals or boots for anyone. No sports shoes with colour other than black) - PE Top (royal blue or house colours) compulsory and black shorts
- School hat / cap or plain black or navy blue cap (optional)
- School beanie or plain black or navy blue beanie (optional, winter only)
- School Jacket (optional)
Mobile Phones
We thought it would also be a good time half way through the year to send out a reminder to students and their families that there is a clear mobile phone policy which guides the use of phones during school time. The purpose of this is to support students concentration on learning during class time. The following expectations apply:
Years 0-10:
No visible Mobile phones allowed at Onewhero Area School. OAS does not allow Years 0-10 students to use a Mobile phone at school for any reason. If a student brings a phone to school it must be kept out of sight and turned off until the end of the school day. If a student is observed with a mobile phone any time before 3pm, the phone will be confiscated and the student must hand it to the staff member immediately when asked.
Years 11-13:
Mobile phones allowed at school but not allowed in class If a student does bring a mobile phone to school, the following guidelines apply:
• Students must turn their phones and keep them out of sight while in class.
• Mobile phones may be used at break times only (this does not include between classes), although we advise against this. If a staff member observes a student with a Mobile phone any time outside of break times, the phone will be confiscated and the student must hand it to the staff member immediately when asked.

As a consequence of this review, ward and community boards boundaries are likely to change. There is a current proposal to split the current Onewhero/Tuakau Community Board and replace the “western” side of the river with a community committee. We NEED to hear whether you agree or disagree with this. If you disagree, we want to hear what you WOULD like to see. We are now taking submissions - you have until Friday 20th August 5pm to enter a submission. Council facilitated community drop-in sessions have been planned for Tuesday 3rd August, Pukekawa Hall 6pm and Tuesday 10th August 5.30pm Tuakau Town Hall.
