"Have Grit and Never Quit" - Dr. Jon Sheldahl
How Solid Grading Practices and Teacher Clarity Can Help Instill Grit
Our best students are great at covering up their weaknesses with "fluff"; extra credit, grade chasing, and point chasing. They are not always as good at being gritty because they have been trained to say "just give me the answer" or "how many points is this worth" or "if this isn't graded, why should I do it?" - the answer to all of these should be "the value in this is not points or a grade it's the opportunity to learn and be challenged to master a new concept or idea; that is the value in education and WHY we are here. The opportunity to be lifelong learners and learn our entire life is a tremendous privilege. I care about your learning and growth".
The article below is an excellent article from a psychological perspective on grit and perseverance and the "growth mindset". We can change the whole conversation about education literally one conversation at a time when we are introducing the learning target daily; instead of emphasizing how many points an item is worth or the grade value, emphasize the application of the knowledge (why is this important to learn?) and the value in the opportunity to learn something new and the challenge that comes along with pursuing this new learning. Create lifelong learners one conversation at a time.
If we don't change the conversation now and continue instilling that love of learning in our students and the love of the challenge and grit it takes when we are learning, when will we start?

It is August 2018, and ….
Use the present tense to describe what reaching our BLT goal(s) looks like, sounds like, and feels like in the school in June of 2019.
Because of Capturing Kids’ Hearts and Jensen’s work - Discipline Issues are way down and decreasing
80% of students are proficient on any given summative (final) classroom assessment
Students are actively involved in school sports or activities and this number is increasing based on the survey given annually
Our annual student growth on ISASP far exceeds the annual growth of area schools
We are following the MTSS (Multi-Tiered Systems of Supports) intervention system with fidelity = when kids need support we are giving it to them and responding immediately.
Student and parent/community survey on climate and their overall feelings shows that CKH is working and that students feel safe and that their input is valued and taken seriously - repeat this to look at growth
Student D’s and F’s are down drastically = student learning and growth is being monitored and maximized by our PLT’s
