Participatory Budgeting - Cast your Vote!

Every year our school participates in the Department of Education's Civics for All initiative. Student council is excited to announce that we have been granted $2,667 that the community can decide how to spend. Our student leaders have thought about some issues and the best way to spend this money that would benefit the most students.

Classroom Spotlight: Science

6th Grade- Human Impact on Earth’s Climate

In our "Human Impact on Earth’s Climate" unit, students explore how human activities affect the planet’s climate. They’ll ask questions, analyze historical weather data, and learn how energy influences global and regional temperatures. They’ll also investigate how human actions change the way energy moves through the Earth’s systems. As part of this unit, students will identify weather patterns, use technology to predict severe weather, and work on solutions to help reduce human impact on the environment. This hands-on approach helps them apply scientific concepts to real-world climate challenges.

7th Grade-Cells and Body Systems

In this unit, students will explore the fundamentals of cell theory and learn how to use microscopes to examine various slides for the NYS Mandated Alive lab. They will gather evidence supporting the idea that all living things are made of cells. Students will also study and draw cellular organelles, learning about their structure and functions, and will compare animal and plant cells. Additionally, the unit includes a body systems module, where students will dive into the digestive, respiratory, circulatory, and nervous systems. To understand how these systems work together, students will first focus on learning about each system and its parts in detail through several lessons.

Grade 8- Genetics and Biotechnology

In this unit, students will explore exciting questions about genetics, such as why offspring resemble their parents, how we use genetics to create organisms with desired traits, and how DNA influences the traits of individuals. They will also learn about the importance of protein structures, how mutations affect traits, and how they occur. Additionally, students will investigate how advancements in biotechnology have impacted humans and our understanding of genetics.

Basketball Game Popcorn Stands

The popcorn stand at our home basketball games have been a huge success so far this year! If you are able to help out for any games, please complete the form below! We are hosting a stand at the game this Friday, bring money for popcorn and snacks!

We have partnered "PRACTICE" to offer free, on-demand, virtual tutoring and homework assistance for MS 50 students! Tutoring is available in English, Spanish, or Mandarin, Monday to Friday, 4-8pm, starting NOW! You can book a session at the link below up to 24 hours in advance. Booking a session is simple; click on this video link to see how to sign up. Once you've submitted the form, you will receive an email confirmation with the Google meeting link for the session. Please note: student DOE emails are not compatible for session scheduling.

All MS 50 students are eligible for a FREE internet hotspot through T-Mobile's Project 10Million. This provides 100GB of yearly data for 5 years in addition to low-cost laptops and tablets for your student. When you apply online, use "NYC Chancellor's Office" for the school district and "Jhs 50 John D Wells" for school name.
