Message From Mrs. Merivirta
Students in grades K-6 have begun taking their fall NWEA assessment for ELA and math. These assessments, which are given three times a year (fall, winter and spring) help identify students who need extra support and to individualize instruction. Results of the fall NWEA testing will be shared with parents during our fall conferences.
Our Parent Volunteer Group will once again hold a FUN RUN Fundraiser. Students will be bringing home information. Collections for the event will run from September 27 to October 11 . The money raised from this will help fund field trips for students, provide schoolwide assemblies, as well as support materials and resources for classrooms. The group will kick off the event with an assembly on Friday, September 27; students will bring home their packets that day from school.
Thank you for your patience and support as we navigate parking, particularly on game days. This past Friday was Eisenhower's Homecoming, and we had added support. Friday, October 4th, will be Utica High's Homecoming and we will again have additional support. Blue flyers will come home on WEDNESDAY, October 2nd; please look for one in your child's backpack. If you do not receive one, have your child request one on Thursday. They will be necessary to get into our lot that day.
We continue to ask for your help in utilizing the drop off/pick up lane at beginning and end of day.
A few reminders to help us: Students in grades 3-6 are encouraged to walk from the SAM suite doors (where they are dismissed) to meet parents in the pick up line. Students in grades 1-2 may also utilize the pick up lane; please let teachers know that you will be picking up. Adults will be outside to assist. Please let your child know that you will circle around until they are visible.
To keep the line moving, if you do not see your child, instead of parking and holding up the line, you may enter the drive through lane and re-enter the pick up lane at the far end of the parking lot (north end near the field) and come back around.
We also ask that you adhere to the following expectations:
- NO ONE is to get out of their car if they are in the Drop Off/Pick Up lane. If you need to get out you must park your car and walk up.
- Children may only enter a car from the passenger side, along the curb (the pick up lane); they may not walk out to the drive through lane.
- If your child is not visible/out yet, please continue to loop around until you see them.
- Once you are in the lot, you can only TURN LEFT (from whatever row you are in). Turning right will mean that you are driving into oncoming traffic.
- Please be patient and model behaviors that your child and others will be proud of.
Reminder, students should not arrive before 8:50 AM. They are to wait outside their door, as there will be teacher supervision. Students will enter the building when the bell rings at 9:00 AM. The exception to this is if your child is coming for breakfast; they may enter the building through Door #4 beginning at 8:40 AM.
If you are arriving late, you and your child must enter through the Office Door; you must sign your child in.
Please note that you can access past issues of the Wiley Way by clicking on the buttons at the end of this newsletter or by visiting the Wiley homepage online.
As always, we look forward to working in partnership this year to help every child succeed! If you ever have a question or a concern, please contact me.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Merivirta
National Hispanic-Latino Heritage Month
As we continue to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month please take this opportunity to share a story with your children. Learn how a little girl, Alma, learns how she was named.
WILEY COYOTE VOLUNTEER PARENT GROUP
Please take a moment to review the upcoming events sponsored by our Parent Volunteer Group. The group meets on a monthly basis and encourages participation by all! We hope that you can volunteer to support some of the planned events and share your ideas as well. The next meeting will be held on October 8th, at 7:00 PM in the Media Center. We hope to see you there!
Safety remains a priority for our schools. Wiley Elementary will once again be providing training to our students on our safety protocols. The protocols identify actions that students may be asked to take in the event of a potential incident: hold, secure, lockdown, evacuate and shelter.
The training is provided through a short, animated video. In the video, the teacher – Mrs. Appleton – and her students walk through the different responses in a very relaxed and engaging way for younger children. The script was written by our staff.
The protocols will continue to be part of the training while practicing our regular school safety drills, such as fire drills, security drills, tornado drills, evacuation procedures, etc.
The video is available for you to review at this link: UCS School Safety: Standard Response Protocol - Elementary - YouTube If you have any questions, please contact our office.
LUNCH DELIVERY REMINDERS
While we understand the appeal of having fast food delivered to school, we prioritize the health, safety, and well-being of our entire student body. Allowing outside food deliveries creates logistical challenges, disrupts the school environment, and can lead to unfair advantages for some students. For these reasons, fast food deliveries during school hours will not be permitted. We encourage all students to either bring a packed lunch or enjoy the free meals provided in our cafeteria.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation!
SECURITY PROCEDURES
We are asking for your assistance to ensure that our security procedures during the school day are effective and efficient. When you wish to visit Wiley Elementary, come to front door marked OFFICE. At this door we have a security camera, intercom, and buzzer. To help us assist you when you would like to enter our school:
- Please press the buzzer to speak with someone in the office
- You will be asked to state your name and reason for visiting
- You will be asked to show your photo id into the security camera
- Office staff will buzz the door for you to enter the building
- Please pass through the lobby and enter the office
- Office staff will help you with your request
In addition, we are asking you to not let any visitors in the door as you enter (as they come up behind you) or as you exit the building.
The teachers and staff are committed to student safety and security, and we would like to thank you for your assistance in helping keep the students of Wiley safe.
CELEBRATING BIRTHDAYS
The teachers and staff at Wiley support and encourage the recognition of a child’s birthday during the school day. It is an annual milestone in every child’s life that should be celebrated not just at home, but in school as well, where children spend one-third of their day with teachers, classmates, and peers. While there are many wonderful and creative ways to celebrate a child’s birthday in school, birthday celebrations at Wiley will not include food treats. Instead, the focus at Wiley will be recognizing the day in a variety of special ways that do not include food treats. Some possibilities include:
· Class sings “Happy Birthday”
· Happy Birthday Recess/Gift
· Morning “Happy Birthday” PA announcement
· Parent makes a donation of book to class library or a classroom game
· Student reads favorite book to class
· Parent/special someone reads story to class
Your child’s teacher will have more information on how birthdays will be celebrated in the classroom. As educators, caregivers and loved ones we all want the best for our students. Thank you for joining us in giving students healthy opportunities to celebrate important events and achievements.
We LOVE our Volunteers!
Any prospective volunteer of Utica Community Schools including those who will be supervising students, working with students, chaperoning field trip, etc. must complete a Criminal History Check Form and be cleared prior to any volunteer services.
Volunteer background checks must be completed annually. If a parent has students in more than one school, only one volunteer form must be completed.
Click on the link below the photos, complete the form and return to Wiley Office.
