HRCSD hires Amy McConnell as permanent curriculum and instruction executive director
The Hood River County School District (HRCSD) Board of Directors approved the hiring of Amy McConnell as the permanent executive director of curriculum and instruction in its meeting on May 8, 2024.
McConnell, who has been serving as interim executive director for the 2023-24 school year, brings a wealth of experience and a deep commitment to all students' academic, social, and behavioral success. Known for her reflective, organized, and compassionate approach, McConnell is dedicated to educational equity, inclusiveness, and cultural responsiveness, which align closely with the school district's vision and mission.
McConnell's professional journey in education spans over a decade, including various roles within the HRCSD and Jefferson County School District. Within Hood River County School District, McConnell’s administrative experience includes serving as the assistant director of curriculum and instruction, Westside Elementary School's vice principal, and the migrant summer school assistant director. Before assuming these administrative roles, she was a learning specialist at May Street Elementary School for five years.
At Jefferson School District, McConnell taught kindergarten and third grade for four years. She began her educational career as an elementary learning specialist for two years in Jefferson County.
McConnell earned a Master of Education in education administration from Concordia University and a Bachelor of Science in education from Western Michigan University, majoring in special education and elementary social studies.
McConnell's journey in education began as a special education teacher, providing her with a comprehensive understanding of students' diverse needs and the importance of differentiated instruction. Her subsequent roles as a teacher and administrator have further broadened her perspective on different educational levels and the importance of collaboration and inclusive environments.
As interim director of curriculum and instruction, McConnell spearheaded the development and implementation of data-driven strategies, leading to significant improvements in educational outcomes across the school district. She is passionate about initiatives such as AVID, Integrated ELD, equitable grading, and the science of reading, which she believes will improve outcomes for all learners.
"I am excited to continue working with the amazing group of leaders and educators at Hood River County School District," said McConnell. "I am eager to further contribute my leadership and expertise to enhance educational excellence and equity in Hood River County."
McConnell's appointment as the permanent Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction reflects the school district's commitment to fostering positive change and ensuring the success of every student.
