A message from Career Academy Principal, Mrs. Katie Towler
Welcome back!
After an unconventional start to the school year, we are thrilled to have students back in our classrooms on our campus. Things look a little different at the Career Academy this year, but our eagerness to engage in meaningful learning with students is stronger than ever. As with the traditional school campuses, everyone on our campus is required to wear a mask and socially distance. Teachers and staff will be diligent in practicing safe and thorough cleaning procedures. If a student has a fever or is not feeling well, we are asking they stay home until they are 24 hours fever-free without the aid of a fever reducer. If a student starts to feel ill while at the Career Academy we will contact the student’s parent/guardian and will care for the student until they can be picked up. For more detailed information about the Sioux City Community School District’s Student Illness Plan please follow this link: https://www.siouxcityschools.org/sccsd-covid-19-and-illness-protocols-and-practices/
We are certain this year will provide challenges, but are confident that together we can get through them. Thank you for partnering with us.

A message from Career Academy Guidance Counselor, Mr. Jeff Lucas
Welcome back to the school year! It is great to see students back at the Career Academy. Things are a little bit different, but we will make the most of it and have a great 2020-21 school year!
Here are a few back to school items in regards to college and career planning.
** Campus Visits: Many colleges and universities have suspended campus visits due to Covid 19. Virtual campus visits are an option. Check for links within the college’s admission tab or link. The Golden Circle College Fair is the largest college fair in Iowa. This year due to Covid 19 it will be a virtual fair and is open to all high school students grades 9 thru 12. For more details and to register check out https://www.icansucceed.org/golden-circle-college-and-career-fair.
**Internship Opportunities: Students in grades 11 & 12 have the opportunity to be involved in work based learning opportunities through the Career Academy. Internships can be done during the school day depending on openings in a student’s schedule and after school hours. If you are not able to set up an internship for the fall semester there are opportunities to add one in the spring. Contact the Career Academy for more information.
** Financial Aid for College: Seniors you can begin submitting your FAFSA for financial aid to assist with the cost of college beginning October 1st. Prior to submitting your FAFSA you will need to create a FAFSA ID. To begin visit www.studentaid.gov. If you have questions about setting up your FAFSA account contact Mr. Lucas at the Career Academy or your home high school counselor.
** Other College and Career Planning Assistance:
ü All high school students have access to the Iowa College and Career Planning web site. This site has lots of information for grades 9 thru 12 in planning for college and career assessments to assist in career exploration. Students can access the site by logging in thru their Clever account.
ü Iowa College Access Network (ICAN) is another valuable resource for college and career planning. The ICAN home page is https://www.icansucceed.org/
ü The Career Academy offers a one semester course called College and Test Prep. The course gives students an online ACT Prep curriculum to prepare for the exam and curriculum that covers career and college planning, as well as navigating the financial aid process. Multiple sections of College and Test Prep will be taught second semester if you were not able to add it to your 1st semester schedule.
If you have any questions about the above information please do not hesitate to contact me at lucasj@live.siouxcityschools.com or 712 279-6668. You can also follow the Career Academy Twitter account @MrLucasAcademy for college and career planning updates.
I’m looking forward to another great year at the Career Academy!
