Ms. Rivers traveled to Lawrence, Kansas on Thursday, November 15 to attend a reception for the KC Scholars at KU. Last year’s graduate Yun Dong was being honored along with KC Scholars from throughout the Kansas City Area. The reception was held at the Chancellor’s home.

The 5th Annual SMN "Trivia Night for the Tribe" will be held on Saturday, January 19th, 6:30pm at St. Pius Church in Mission This event is co-sponsored by the SMN PTSA and the SMN Booster Club. If you haven't heard.... "Trivia Night for the Tribe" is a fun night full of trivia, prizes (Best Table Decorations, Best Team Theme/Costumes) and a huge prize raffle. Cost for this adults-only evening is $30.00 per person/$240 to reserve your table if you sign up prior to the deadline. And, if you sign up as a table, you can designate $100 of your registration to go to the SMN club, group or team of your choice!

Coaches and sponsors, please consider pushing this info out to your parents and ask them to designate YOUR group or team.

Space is limited so get your table reservation in ASAP. Proceeds go to support SMN students!

In an effort to raise awareness of pressing issues that we are facing in our community, give parents/guardians access to knowledge and resources, as well as bring community agencies to the parents/guardians, East Antioch has organized North Area Parent Information Nights. Each quarter there will be a different topic and speaker arranged.

SPEAK UP (http://speakup.us) a local non-profit united in breaking the silence and reducing stigma surrounding all mental illness and suicide. They will be presenting on Thursday, November 29th at 6:30pm at Hocker Grove Middle School.

On November 5, North was privileged to host a US Department of State Visitor Program delegation. Guests of the government included representatives from Hungary, Morocco, Japan, Argentina, South Africa, and South Sudan. The group interacted with students individually, in small groups and in a large group forum. In addition to IB classes, the delegation was able to visit with students from US History and Student Council classes.

The delegation’s objective was to understand the development of democracy and civic education in the western tradition. Various discussion topics were voting, civic education, conflict, government, democracy, the influence of money in elections, student perspectives and involvement on society and politics, the rights of minority people and groups, and youth engagement.

We sought to accommodate the delegates and their interests and highlight the work happening here at North to engage students and foster current and future citizen involvement.

Tina Keith's Practical Law classes took a field trip to the Johnson County Courthouse and Jail on Friday. They toured both facilities and had the opportunity to see court proceedings first hand. They saw how the court uses interpreters and conducts criminal and civil court cases.

The Focus on Foods classes made 50 pumpkin pies which were donated to the St. Mary’s Food

Kitchen in Kansas City, KS, for their Thanksgiving meal. The kitchen serves between four and

five hundred people on Thanksgiving Day. Donating pumpkin pies has been a tradition for more

than two decades. Mrs. Diann Eber is the instructor but the tradition started with Mrs. Louise

Lloyd, now retired from SMN.

Mrs. Eber and all of the Focus on Foods students would like to thank PTSA for their generous contribution that paid for allthe supplies needed to make the pies. We are overwhelmed with gratitude.

After Jan. 19, only 65 extra overstock supply of yearbooks will be available for $65. These will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis. Once they are gone, none will be available.

SMN Choral department is proud to announce that seven students were selected by blind audition on November 3rd to be members of the East Central KS Music Educators High School Honor Choirs. Julia Diaz, Drew Madden, Ryan Russell, Alex Arnold, Alyssa Freeman, Delaney Piker, and Kayla Warren will participate with this choir on December 1 and are eligible for All State Choir.

Our holiday dessert show, Sweet Sounds of the Season is December 6 at the Lenexa Community Center at 7 pm. Tickets can be purchased at smnchoirs.org/fundraiser. Doors open at 6:15. Come join us for an evening music and treats!

SMN Chorale will be featured as part of KSHB’s Sounds of the Holiday this year!

Tune in to KSHB-TB on December 25th between 4-6 am or 10 am to noon so see the choir perform.

The performance will also air on Channel 28The Spot from 7-9 pm on December 30.

Congratulations to Maggie Cooper for receiving an Award of Excellence in the SM North PTA Reflections contest for her Visual Arts entry “The Women Around Me.”

Her work advanced to the district level and will be on display at the SMAC PTA Reflections Open House on Monday, December 3 from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. at the Center for Academic Achievement. The work will remain on display at the CAA until mid January,

A lot of exciting things have been happening in the visual arts department lately.

On Thursday November 8, several art students traveled to Ray-Pec high school to participate in their art competition with students from several other area high schools. Evey Goering was awarded 2nd in the still life drawing category. Alex Bennett was awarded 3rd place in drawing in the art show that accompanied the competition.

In addition, several North students had work accepted into Merriam's annual High school art competition at the Irene French Community Center. Those students are Ellie Brenneman, Madison Dunham, Oliver Fowler, Fiona Linn, Alex Bennett, and Penny Pepper.
