Trussville City Schools - Teacher Spotlight
Get to Know Mrs. Katie Johnson, Third Grade Teacher at Paine Elementary
This week, we highlight Mrs. Katie Johnson, third grade teacher at Paine Elementary. Mrs. Johnson graduated from UAB in 2010. This is her 14th year in education and 5th year teaching at Paine.
In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her husband Michael and their two daughters, Taylor (9) and Ella (7). Both of her daughters attend Paine Elementary as well. They love the outdoors!
Paine Elementary is very special to Mrs. Johnson. She says her favorite thing about teaching at Paine is "the strong sense of community we have here. Even though it is such a large school, all the teachers know each other's students and take the time to make the students feel loves and welcome." Mrs. Johnson also loves teaching in the same community where she lives. This allows her to build relationships with families and have the opportunity to watch her students succeed beyond the classroom!

Championship Ticket Information
All ticket prices for the AHSAA State Finals are $12 per day. A ticket includes eight games per day for semifinal action or six games per day for finals action (with no passes out). In addition to the facility rental fee charged to the AHSAA, the BJCC charges $1 per ticket, bringing the total cost of a ticket purchased, at the gate, to $13.
The State Finals is the only AHSAA championship event where GoFan, the AHSAA's digital ticket provider, cannot be used due to the BJCC's contract with Ticketmaster. All fees associated with an online ticket purchase for the State Finals go directly to Ticketmaster, not the AHSAA, bringing the total cost of a digital ticket to $17.22. Therefore, the AHSAA recommends you purchase all tickets at the gate. We encourage fans to arrive early for game times to avoid long delays at the gate's box office.
Again, the AHSAA State Finals ticket is $12 per day. All additional ticket fees are charged by the BJCC and Ticketmaster.

During State Finals, there will be metered parking available along nearby streets (Note: City of Birmingham metered parking is free of charge after 6:00 PM on weeknights and all day Saturday and Sunday) as well as paid parking in surface lots and parking decks managed by 3rd party parking services companies surrounding the BJCC.

HTHS SWENext Attends Auburn University E-Day
The HTHS SWENext Girls in Engineering Club took a field trip to Auburn University to participate in Auburn’s annual E-Day (Engineering Day) on Friday, February 23. Auburn’s E-Day website provides information about this annual event. “Auburn Engineering's annual open house gives students a chance to learn about our campus, our programs and the incredible opportunities Auburn's Samuel Ginn College of Engineering offers. Seventh through twelfth graders have opportunities to chat one-on-one with students and faculty, experience interactive exhibits, and visit classes and labs, including the new Brown-Kopel Engineering Student Achievement Center. They can also tour the beautiful Auburn campus, and learn about admissions, scholarships, financial aid and residence life."
First Graders at Magnolia Visit Anniston Museum of Natural History
Magnolia first graders took a field trip to the Anniston Museum of Natural History. According to first grade teachers, Mrs. Tiffany Reed, Mrs. Cindy Burns, Mrs. Jeanette Cerisano, and Miss Ruth Fiore, "We learned lots of interesting facts during the live animal show and enjoyed touring the amazing museum. The museum recently added an interactive room which was a big hit as well. Field trips make memories that last a lifetime, and we know we will remember this one with a big smile."
Paine Second Graders Get Their Hands in the Soil and Learn about Plants
Mrs. Parker and Mrs. Seeley's homeroom classes at Paine Elementary studied their plant unit through hands-on learning. Each student was able to observe and describe how seeds grow into mature plants by planting and nurturing one of their own. They explored the life and growth by carefully factoring what allowed their plants to flourish: air, light, water, nutrients from the soil, and room to grow.

Mrs. Moore's Class Honored as "Read Bowl Champions"
In preparation for this year's NFL Super Bowl, Mrs. Holly Moore's Fourth Grade class at Paine Elementary participated in the "Read Bowl" Challenge. This reading challenge was created by Atlanta Falcons player, Malcolm Mitchell. As a young child, he struggled with reading and wants to encourage young readers to work hard and persevere. Mrs. Moore's classroom won the championship for the state of Alabama and read the most minutes of any class in their division. Their class will be awarded a prize pack from Mr. Mitchell. Animals Take Over Cahaba!
Second Grade is the place to learn research and presentation skills! Our students studied animal diversity, chose a favorite animal and researched, as a part of their recent writing unit. Our parents partnered with us to help create dioramas at home. The unit culminated with our Cahaba Animal Exhibit and Presentations. Thank you to all our parents and grandparents that came to our show.
Join us on a wild adventure with our 3rd grade Cahaba Animal Researchers as they dive deep into the worlds of the axolotl, narwhal, sloth, okapi, and platypus! Students in Mrs. Vincent and Mrs. Mosley’s reading classes have spent the past five weeks learning about “Animals and Their Habitats” in the Open Court curriculum. To end our unit on informational writing and animal habitats, students used National Geographic for Kids, animal fact guides, MyON, Epic, QR codes, and multiple other resources to guide their research. They also participated in an animal habitat virtual reality session in our learning lab to learn more information. Students then used their research to create presentations with Google Slides to present to the class. Our students uncovered fascinating facts about each creature's habitat, location, life cycle, diet, threats, fun facts, and unique characteristics. From the axolotl's regenerative powers to the narwhal's mystical tusk, each animal offered a lot of ah-ha moments connecting their discoveries from what they learned in our animal unit. Through note taking and creative presentations, our explorers enjoyed working together in learning groups and independently to bring these remarkable creatures to life by incorporating text features in their presentations with vibrant pictures, captions, headings, and maps.
