Hero Cards - Here's the Scoop!
All of our social and academic behavior expectations are taught within the framework of our HERO Standards. We talk about what it looks like to be a hero in all parts of the building (in class, in the cafeteria, on the bus, during social time, etc.). The standards are:
H - Here to Learn
E - Engaged in Learning
R - Respect for Self & Others
O - Own it! (Taking responsibility for your actions/behaviors/attitude)
Hole punches are visual reminders for students who are not meeting our school wide expectations for behavior. Hole punches start over every 3 weeks. Our goal is for students to reflect and create habits that ensure learning for all students in every class.
The first hole punch is just a warning. Most middle school students will need a reminder at some point in the year.
The second hole punch is a parent conversation so that we can all work together as a team to find a way to meet these behavior expectations.
The third hole punch in a three week period will result in a lunch detention.
The fourth hole punch in a three week period will result in an AM or PM lunch detention to reflect and come up with solutions to correct the behaviors.
Further hole punches indicate the student needs more individualized instruction on appropriate behaviors. The student might be assigned a behavior academy to relearn behaviors, participate in a parent/teacher/student meeting, or have an individual behavior plan.
Arrival/Dismissal Reminders
- Our Crosswalk Safety Guards during dismissal and arrival have one MAIN purpose - to get students across the roads safely. Student safety is their priority. He/she MAY direct traffic to expedite the process. Slow down and be aware of all staff on duty.
- Do not use your cell phone in a school zone - this is an Arkansas state law.
- Be courteous to your fellow drivers - do not try and "cheat" the system - be patient. When you hurry, student safety is compromised.
- 6th grade side - alternate (1, 2, 3) entering the turn-around.
- Pull all the way forward - your child can walk to get to you/or the entrance.
- Use your blinker - communicate when you are ready to pull away from the building.
- Please do not arrive for dismissal BEFORE 2:30pm - we use all of our campus for classes.
- Lastly, if it is ever raining/storming, we will open all side doors in the morning, so your student can enter as quickly as possible from any side door. If it is storming during dismissal, it will typically take much longer to dismiss, be patient with us.
Snack Pack Programs
The Samaritan Community Center is partnering with schools to provide sacks of food to eligible children on a weekly basis through the SnackPacks for Kids program. The program will provide 8-10 food items to students so they will have food available for the weekend. The following is a list of the types of foods that could be provided: Shelf Stable 1% Milk, Pudding Cups, Fruit Snacks, Cereal, Slim Jim, Cheese and Crackers, Easy Mac, Ramen Noodles, Shortbread Cookies, and tuna or chicken packet.
If you would like for your child to receive snack packs this year at Hellstern, please email aashworth@sdale.org or lmckee@sdale.org.

Conferences are around the corner...
- Teachers will be sending out invites this week for Parent-Teacher Conferences. You will receive either an email or text asking you to select a time in the online app "Sign Up Genius". If you have trouble, please contact your student's advisor.
- If you are bilingual and would like to volunteer as an interpreter for Hellstern MS, please reach out to our ESL Center at 479-750-8706. Be sure and let them know that you are interested in serving Hellstern.
- Home Access Center (HAC) - We will have a station to help you get into Home Access Center during conferences. Many of our parents have tried and are having trouble, and we need to sit with you and trouble-shoot the issue. We have been working with students this week to get them into HAC. Once your student logs in and changes his/her password - the student can always log in for you and show you his/her grades.
As we wrap up the first three weeks...
The first three weeks of advisory have been dedicated to students "earning their passport". We have been teaching expectations in all of the spaces in our building, along with best practices for academic and social behaviors. As we complete these lessons, students have been getting a stamp on their "passport". When your student has earned all of his/her stamps, he/she will receive passport flair that can be pinned to his/her lanyard. Ask your student about it!
Lanyard Update
All students who have athletics first block can still buy replacement ID's. Please place $5 in an envelope with the student name and advisory teacher and turn it into the office. ID's will be printed in the morning and delivered to advisory.
From PTO
We have a PTO meeting on Tuesday, September 2nd @ 8:30am.

Be a Sonic Drink Hero! We treat our teachers and staff to Sonic drinks once a month. If you’d like to contribute to the cost of drinks for a month (about $120 per month) and help deliver the drinks to school, please sign up here. This is a great opportunity for several families to work together to support our teachers and staff each month!
