PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
We sure hope you are all enjoying this 3 day Memorial Day weekend! However you might be enjoying your time, we all join together in honoring those brave souls who made the ultimate sacrifice and lost their lives while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. The Joan MacQueen community honors these men and women, and their loved ones.
Last week was a special one at JMMS. Our Intrepid 6th Grade Campers returned from their camp experience on Friday, a little tired, but excited to be home with their families. The trip to the SDCOE Innovation Center was a huge success. SBAC testing came to a close as the final testers completed their assessments.
We hope you enjoy this latest edition of the Dust Devil Weekly!
Happy Memorial Day!

6th Grade Camp a Huge Success!
Another successful week of happy campers from JMMS! Our 6th graders and teachers had an amazing week of fun and friendship at Camp Cuyamaca! They spent the week learning about the great outdoors as well as, hiking, playing games, going to a campfire, learning to make fire, and so much more! They had a blast and were ready for the 3 day weekend when they returned on Friday!
Sighted on Campus...
- Mrs. Galvez running "Camp Learn A Lot" for the 6th graders that stayed at JMMS this week! They had a blast playing games, making crafts, cooking and learning about camp!
- Students in Mr. Walker's room making miniature golf courses to learn about surface area and composite shapes!
- Mrs. Tompkins' Engineering students racing their Solar Sprint cars on Friday! Amazing work!
KONA ICE TRUCK WILL BE HERE FOR OUR FINAL LUNCH ON THE LAWN!!
The Kona Ice Truck will make another stop at JMMS on Friday, May 31 at our final Lunch on the Lawn. Students love having the option of buying a shaved ice or a frozen treat and with the weather warming up this will be a perfect way to celebrate our last Lunch on the Lawn!

8th Grade Promotion 2024
It is time to prepare for the Promoting Class of 2024! We will celebrate with our Promotion Ceremony on Tuesday, June 11th at 8:30am in the JMMS Gym. Please read the letter to families linked below for all of the details about the Promotion Ceremony!
Focus on: FOOTWEAR
We realize “footwear” sounds like an odd thing to focus on in a middle school newsletter. However, now that the weather is quickly warming, and testing is behind us, students are increasingly opting to wear “slides” or slippers to school. Now, while we believe these are not appropriate footwear for school–accidents can and do happen–we would like to address a connected issue.
Recently an increasing number of students think it is fun to “mess around (Mr. Bailey’s least-liked phrase)” and take one another’s shoes off and throw them, sometimes AT other students. This has been addressed in our Leadership Assemblies, but some students have not gotten the message.
There are many possible hazards on campus for those not wearing appropriate footwear. Hidden sharp stone, staples, paper clips, other students with sturdy shoes, and certain weeds, can cause harm to unprotected feet.
Please monitor whether the footwear chosen by your child is school appropriate, and remind them that any student removing another’s shoes and throwing them will receive consequences. School is an important place where important work is done, and it deserves appropriate dress.
