Be the Change
Sylvan Middle School September 16-20
Principal's Message
Greetings, Sylvan Families,
I hope you are having a wonderful weekend. I am reaching out to you today with a few updates regarding safety at Sylvan Middle School.
Effective Monday, September 16, 2024, the back gate will be shut immediately at 8:00am when the bell rings in the morning. All late students will need to be routed through the front of the school. Please do not drop students off at the back field cat-walk after 8am. Please also make sure your child who walks to school understands that if they are late, they will need to go around to the front gates. We are changing this protocol so that we can provide additional security to our campus.
Once again, we are encouraging parents to please utilize Sylvan as your pick up and drop off location for school, rather than the surrounding businesses. We want our students to be safe before and after school. We have opportunities before school that provide them safe spaces to hang out with friends including Breakfast Club and the ARC, both of which run five days a week starting at 7:00am. Additionally, we have after school enrichment opportunities including sports, clubs, and the Bridges after school program. There is truly something for everyone. Please check out our school offerings that provide our students a safe and supervised location to hang out.
Please continue to have conversations with your child about social media and please continue to monitor your child’s use of social media. It’s important for the safety of not only your child, but our entire school community. If you see something concerning, please loop us in at the school level. We want to keep everyone safe and appreciate your assistance in this matter.
Lastly, each student received a copy of their first quarter progress report on Friday to bring home for your review. Please review those grades and join us for Parent/Teacher conferences on Wednesday from 12-2:30pm. You can meet with all teachers in one location to discuss academic progress.
Please enjoy your Sunday. See you in the morning.
Respectfully,
Nicole Latimer

LiveSchool Behavior System
Dear Families,
We are off to a great school year! This year, one of our big goals is to create a learning environment where every student is respectful, responsible, and prepared.
This year we will be using LiveSchool, an app that will help us share behavior feedback with you and your child. Your child will receive positive points in LiveSchool for hard work and good behavior. We will also give feedback on negative choices your child may make.
You will be able to access all of this information right from your computer or phone by downloading the free LiveSchool app. If you provided the school with a valid email, you were sent an invitation to receive weekly recaps of your child’s behavior too.
We also want to make learning fun for your child this year! As part of our use of LiveSchool, your child will be able to spend his or her points on various Cougar Den treats and earn the chance to participate in school-wide rewards. We are going to be focusing on positive reinforcement and encouragement and hope that your child earns lots of exciting rewards!
We will be working hard to make this the best school year yet for your child! To learn more, please visit the following web address for a short video introduction to the service: https://www.whyliveschool.com/
If you have any questions, please feel free to email me.
Sincerely,
Michelle Schuermann

Math Block
What is Math Block?
You may have heard from your student that we had our first Math Block rotation on Friday. Math Block is an embedded support time that we use to provide targeted support in Math for our students. Math Block occurs everyday except for Thursday and each cycle is 5 weeks long. The Math Block is scheduled after 3rd period, but the class itself rotates, so that students will have an opportunity to be with each of their scheduled teachers for a Math Block rotation. We also have some students being pulled into other Math Blocks where the teacher is targeting a specific math skill. The rotation seems confusing at first, but the students get the hang of it quickly and we have staff members out during passing period, helping to remind them where they go as well as announcements over the intercom and on our school news. The current Math Block class is your child’s 1st period teacher. This Math Block will run until September 20th.
The schedule is as follows:
1st period
2nd period
3rd period
Math Block (with 1st period teacher)
1st lunch/4th period
4th period/2nd lunch
5th period
6th period
