We are so excited to share our fabulous collection of books and resources with all of our Pirates at Palencia. Please use this newsletter each month to discover all the exciting literacy programs the media center has to offer this year. You can subscribe by clicking FOLLOW at the top of the newsletter and adding your email or click the link in the Pirate Post each month. Our new year will bring with it a big change in the media resource schedule. It is very important for parents and students to keep track of when they are coming to media resource in order to insure everyone gets a chance to check-out books regularly. Please view the calendar link and note when your student's class will be coming to media resource. You will notice that sometimes it will be more than 2 weeks before your child's class comes for media resource. Students can come to the media center and exchange books during the day with their teacher's permission or before or after school until 3:15.

The mission of the library media program is to ensure that students and staff are effective users of ideas, information and technology. Creating a foundation for lifelong learning is at the heart of our program, so that we are prepared to set sail into tomorrow’s world.

Check-out Policy

• There is a two-week checkout period. Items can be renewed as needed.
• The number of resources students can check-out is based on the following grade level system. 3-5 may be given special permission to checkout additional books for research projects.

Kindergarten Students – 1 book

First Grade Students – 2 books

Second Grade Students – 2 books

Third Grade Students – 3 books

Fourth Grade Students – 3 books

Fifth Grade Students - 3 books

• Classroom teachers distribute overdue notices and occasionally parents will be sent e-mail notifications.
• Fines are not charged, but students are expected to pay for lost or damaged books. To pay online visit www.schoolpay.com.
• Only past issues of magazines are available for check-out.
• Parents can request library cards and check out books with their children.

• Always carry library books in a plastic bag - even in your backpack.
• Handle books with clean dry hands.
• Be careful turning pages.
• Use a bookmark! Never dog-ear pages.
• Keep books away from babies and pets.
• Keep books away from water, food, and drinks.

Our library catalog is online and available from computers at school and home. Visit http://www-pes.stjohns.k12.fl.us/media and select Destiny Library Catalog from the top menu. At this page click on Palencia. Then search to find your favorite book or check to see if we have an Accelerated Reader test available for a book. You can also search our MackinVia e-books from the Follett Destiny Catalog.

Each year students are challenged to read books from the Sunshine State Reader list. There are 15 books on the list for grades 3-5. Once students have read at least 3 books and passed an AR test with 70% accuracy, they are eligible to vote for their favorite book. There will be incentives for reading each of the books. Students who read 10 or more will be invited to try out for the Battle of the Books team. For more information and a printable list of books, visit the PES Media Center Website.

We love our volunteers in the media center! The media center is always looking for volunteers to help with displays (doors and bulletin board), special projects, shelving books, and student book selection. The Book Fair is when we need a large volume of help and we give volunteers a 10% discount on their purchases.If you can't volunteer but would like to send in donations, we are always in need of 2 Gallon Ziplock Bags and Clorox Wipes. Please call or email if you would like to help in the media center.

Did you have a summer reading adventure? We are culminating our Summer Reading Adventures at PES by rewarding students who read over the summer with Book Bucks for the Fall Book Fair. $10 in Book Bucks will be awarded to students who write about the reading program they chose to use over the summer. Parents can help students with the story of their reading adventure. We would love a picture too. The summer program featuring Buncee would be a great way to document your child's story. It doesn't matter what students read and we aren't looking for documentation of every book or minutes. Instead, your child should write about what they did and how they were inspired by a reading program, especially those highlighted in the Summer Reading newsletter. We will share these inspirational stories and pick several to be highlighted on the WPES morning news. Please submit your child's story by August 25, 2017 to the media center or email it to shannon.ayrishbooysen@stjohns.k12.fl.us.

The Palencia Elementary School Media Center’s Birthday Book Club is a wonderful way to commemorate your child’s birthday. Your participation not only enriches the library collection but allows you and your child to be personally involved in its growth. To take part in the Birthday Book Club donate one new undamaged hardcover book (not a board book). This book should be a book that your child enjoys and one that we don’t have in the media center already. You can choose a new book at the book store or a new book from the Book Fair. A quick check of our library catalog (Destiny) will tell you if we already have the book. If you would prefer, you may make a monetary donation of $15 and your child can choose from recently acquired books that are waiting to be put on the shelves.
