Dean's Note
"Our work, our relationships, and, in fact, our very lives succeed or fail gradually, then suddenly, one conversation at a time." Susan Scott's quote is the basis for her book Fierce Conversations: Achieving Success at Work & in Life, One Conversation at a Time. She provides the motives for and the structure to have those difficult conversations that we often avoid. She urges each individual to be present in EVERY conversation. She defines a fierce conversation as "one in which we come out from behind ourselves into the conversation and make it real." If we are not truly present for every conversation, then we will miss the details . . . the cues from others that allow us to genuinely connect and nurture those relationships. Perhaps today is a good day to take the first step toward having that fierce conversation that you have been avoiding for quite some time.
Giving Challenge Blow Out
Center for Health and Social Issues looks to improve quality of life in Oconee Heights neighborhood
Georgia College’s Center for Health and Social Issues (CHSI) is working to address blight in one Milledgeville neighborhood with the goal of increasing the well-being of the people living there.
Dr. Damian Francis, director of CHSI, and his team spent hours surveying residents of the Oconee Heights neighborhood to find out the most important challenges they see in their community.
“The idea came about that we should begin by assessing the community needs, and so it started out of a conversation between the CHSI and the county commissioners working to find out what needs communities have,” said Francis. “We used grant funding to meet and survey people living in the area.”

Coming Summer 2021:
The School of Nursing has recently added a graduate-level enrichment course that allows undergraduate seniors and graduate students enrolled in any COHS program an opportunity to explore opportunities in forensic nursing/healthcare. The goal of this course is to encourage a deeper understanding of the history of forensic science as it relates to healthcare, crime, vulnerable populations, and the epidemiology of violence. Students will explore theories and frameworks that contribute to the practice of forensics in healthcare, the role of the healthcare worker as it relates to forensics, and how to collaborate with various multidisciplinary professionals, including victims’ advocates, coroners, law enforcement, attorneys, and pathologists.
This three-credit-hour online course will only be offered in the summer semester and departmental approval is required for registration. Please contact Dr. Josie Doss for additional information at josie.doss@gcsu.edu.
Alumni Chatter
Staying Safe During COVID -19
Fifteen individuals participated in a virtual seminar titled “Medical Professionals and Life During COVID-19” in September. The event, hosted by the Georgia College Nursing Alumni Council, was conducted by a panel of health care leaders, who shared their thoughts on staying protected during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Sarah Parker Tarr, ’05, is a full-time lecturer of nursing, including lab and clinical, at Belmont University and secretary of the Georgia College Nursing Alumni Council. She chose to participate in this forum because COVID-19 has greatly impacted the health care environment.
“As health care professionals, we are all in this together,” she said. “It’s important we have opportunities to share our experiences, learn from one another and reflect on the challenges and successes we’ve encountered during this time.”
The discussion is vital for health care workers as they experience COVID-19 in direct and unique ways.
“As those on the front lines of care, we have a responsibility to remain educated about COVID-19 to provide the best possible care for our patients,” said Tarr. “Health care professionals are overwhelmed, overworked and exhausted from this experience, and it’s far from over.”

Student Activities
The School of Nursing: Doing Our Part to Help with COVID-19 Vaccines
Undergraduate nursing students and faculty have been actively involved in assisting with COVID-19 vaccination clinics. In partnership with Atrium Navicent Healthcare, 8-9 students and 2-4 faculty assist each week with vaccinations at the Navicent Wellness Center on Northside Drive in Macon. Through this effort, students get first-hand experience on pandemic response and conversion of a community site into a mass vaccination clinic.
Simulation Center News
The School of Nursing received six new exciting wearable simulation devices that can be used in the Skills Lab for core competency training and will increase the students’ ability to apply what they learned throughout the semester in a real‐life setting. Incorporating the Avkin wearable simulation devices in conjunction with standardized patients at the Simulation Center will provide students with the highest possible fidelity, putting the patient back at the center of the learning experience. This requires the learners to not only focus on muscle memory and dexterity, but also on empathy and compassion.
The six wearable simulation devices are paired with the easy-to-use Avkin App to allow instructor control over the appropriate auscultation sounds for the learning experience. The standardized patient will receive a haptic vibration in the straps to ensure the appropriate response to the preformed procedure. The six wearable devices allow students to insert an IV, provide tracheostomy or chest tube care, insert a Foley catheter (male or female), access a port-a-cath, and provide central line care with no harm to the standardized patient wearing the devices. These devices include pressurized systems to ensure that accurate circulation, tidaling, fluctuation, and more to support the realism of the learning experience.
Below are images of some of the devices.
