“The Geisler Chronicles” named Most Outstanding Middle School Newspaper
The James R. Geisler Middle School student newspaper, The Geisler Chronicles, received national recognition by the American Scholastic Press Association (ASPA) as the top middle school newspapers in the country for the second-straight year.
“I am very honored to once again have The Geisler Chronicles named Most Outstanding Middle School Newspaper so these wonderful students are recognized for their hard work and dedication in creating our monthly newspaper,” said co-advisor Torry Yu.
The Geisler Chronicles was created during the 2018-19 school year and currently has 41 students contributing articles about what is happening at James R. Geisler Middle School. The monthly edition includes school news, world and national items, sports, short stories, and reviews.
“I have learned so many new things about events in our community, new recipes, and things our students interested in like books, musical groups, and video games,” said Yu. “These students are extremely busy with sports, clubs, and keeping up with their schoolwork and the fact they still make time to contribute to this student-led newspaper is commendable.”
Yu and, fellow co-advisor, Linda Bacon also received a Foundation For Excellence mini grant for the third-straight year, which allowed them to professionally print the final issue of The Geisler Chronicles for the 2023-24 school year.

Leah Nelson receives Golden Apple Award
Wixom Elementary food service server, Leah Nelson, will receive a Golden Apple Award at the June 6, 2024 Board of Education meeting.
Nelson was nominated by Wixom Elementary third grade teacher, Cassey Marshall, because she radiates joy and makes children feel that they have one more trusted adult in their lives.
“Leah is an incredible representation of the happiness I want my own child to be welcomed by each day,” said Marshall. “She creates natural connections with every child, every day.”
Nelson is an excellent model of someone who is passionate about the work they do and inspires others to find that passion on the days that it might not come so easily.
“Leah has created an environment in the cafeteria that makes it feel like home,” added Marshall. “She brings our students in on the lunch serving process by having specific jobs that help them contribute to their school community. She makes working FUN!”
Laura Iaquinto receives Golden Apple Award
Oakley Park Elementary resource room paraeducator, Laura Iaquinto, will receive a Golden Apple Award at the June 6, 2024 Board of Education meeting.
Iaquinto was nominated by Oakley Park Elementary teachers Leslie Bielis-Vokers, Lee Ann Prestel and Wendy Rozman because she is reliable, steps-in wherever needed and shows how important work ethic is to students and staff.
Although Iaquinto has been assigned to one child throughout her time as an Oakley Park paraprofessional, she always lends a helping hand and a loving heart to all students whether it is help out with a team meeting or give a hug at the front door.
As a paraeducator to a child with extreme and life-threatening allergies, Iaquinto must consistently coordinate different plans, schedules, and environments to allow this child to fully participate in the daily activities of an elementary school student. She searches for alternatives for supplies and materials in order for this student to feel included and connected with his peers.
Iaquinto “checks in” with students and staff every day making connections and building relationships. She maintains a lighthearted perspective and truly cares about each and every student with her gracious heart.
