Irmo Elementary Family Updates
#HeartoftheHive October 3-7
A Note From Your Principal
Dear IES Families,
Although it was a little shorter week than planned, I hope you all stayed safe during our Friday eLearning day and throughout the weekend. Please take note of the information shared below if you plan to chaperone your bee on a field trip this school year. You must complete the linked form at least two weeks in advance and drop it by IES along with your state issued ID. This update is in place to keep safety as the top priority for all students. We love having you with us on our field trip experiences and we don't want you to miss out because this process was not complete in time. Thank you for your support!

D5 Volunteer Information:
The goal of the volunteer program in School District Five is to utilize the wealth of knowledge, experience, and talents prevalent in our community to ensure continued educational excellence. To attract, maintain and fully utilize the services of volunteers, effective management is crucial. A professional approach must be maintained as the needs of the schools and the motivations of volunteers expand.
In order to become a volunteer, please complete the Volunteer Application and Confidentiality Agreement for School Volunteers found below and return to the volunteer liaison at the school at which you wish to volunteer. In order for your application to be considered, please provide an official photo ID when submitting the required paperwork.
If you plan to be a volunteer tutor, volunteer coach, assist with the band/step program or plan to chaperone a field trip, you must fill out the district Volunteer Application and Confidentiality Agreement.
These applications are approved for three years but are subject to review. Also, your application may be submitted to the S.C. Law Enforcement Division (SLED) for a background check, a sex offender background check and the Department of Social Services (DSS Child Abuse Registry). Based on information received from these agencies, you may not be permitted to become a volunteer.
All daytime school volunteers and visitors should check in at the school’s Lobby Guard station and wear the issued identification badge while in the school. This process eliminates the need for daytime volunteers to fill out the district volunteer application.
Volunteers seeking approval for overnight/daytime field trips should submit an application at least two weeks before the trip. The school will be sent a list of approved chaperones.
Volunteers should obtain permission to visit other classrooms, students or teachers while working in schools.
Volunteers should dress appropriately for the school setting.

Lunch and Visitor Reminders for Families
Lunch in the Hive:
All visitors are required to sign in through our Ident-a-Kid system using their state issued ID in the front office and walk through the metal detectors (please leave all extra items in the car outside of your keys and cell phone)
For the safety of our children, please keep your Ident-a-Kid sticker visible while you are visiting.
Parents who wish to come in for lunch need to notify the homeroom teacher at least a day before (24 hours) so that we are able to offer a more accurate lunch count to our cafeteria. This helps ensure that enough food is prepared to cover students and guests.
Lunch visitors will wait in the sitting/standing area and hallway by the cafe (near the “Together We Can Do More” blue rug) for their child’s class to pass through. For safety reasons and a priority on instruction, families should not wait outside their child’s classroom or stop by the classroom.
Parents & their child will sit at designated bistro tables during lunch times (please do not bring in outside/restaurant food or ask other children to join you and your child). This is a special time for you and your child and our bees love the bistro tables and the one-on-one time with you.
Visitors in the Building:
To honor instructional time, classroom visits should be preplanned. We love having visitors for scheduled guest readers, volunteering in the classroom, guest speakers, volunteering for schoolwide events and more as appropriate to the individual needs of the classroom and grade level. Please reach out to your child’s teacher for specific details for how you can support the heart of the hive!
All visitors are required to sign in through our Ident-a-Kid system using their ID/driver’s license in the front office and walk through the metal detectors (please leave all extra items in the car outside of your keys and cell phone)
We encourage independent learners at IES. Parents typically walk their children to class on the first and second day of school in August. After that time, students follow our typical protocol of being dropped off through the car rider line or by bus transportation unless they arrive tardy to school in rare cases. If your student is tardy, you will come to the front office to sign them in. Thank you for supporting our bees with this process.
