Eagle Connect: April 2025

April 2025
A Message from Principal Dr. Chris Botts
April 2025
It seems like I just finished writing the newsletter for March and yet, here we are getting ready to start April. As mentioned before, the end of the school year is extremely busy with spring sports and activities, state testing, prom, finals, and graduation. As an educator, parent, and spouse, I know how often I can get caught up in the race of life. While we are all busy, I truly hope your pace can slow down so that you can enjoy the little moments in life that will make a lifetime of memories. I recently came across this quote and hope you find some peace in reading it:
Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under trees on a summer’s day, listening to the murmur of the water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is by no means a waste of time.
John Lubbock
News and Notes:
In anticipation of Prom, we are having a spirit week for students and staff:
Monday: PJ/Comfy Clothes Day
Tuesday: April Fools...mismatch, clothes backwards, etc.
Wednesday: Favorite musician/singer/band or concert shirt
Thursday: Jersey Day or favorite sports team
Friday: Hat Day and Country Club Day (get ready for the Master's)
Prom: This will take place at The Cotillion on Saturday, April 5th from 8-11pm. Prom is for all juniors, seniors, and their dates. Be on the lookout for ticket sales soon. As always, tickets can be purchased at myschooldance.com
After Prom: This event is for all MHS students in 11th and 12th grade (and their dates) for a safe activity for them to do after prom on April 5th. It runs from 11-2am at MHS. However, the committee is short on some funds. If you are able, I know any contribution made to After Prom would be greatly appreciated and go to an amazing cause. You can send financial donations directly using Venmo: @maizeafterprom
Congratulations to the students who performed in the 5A-6A All-State Orchestra:
Johanna Speer, viola
Lyla Lansdown, violin I
Jack Bowen, violin II
Kathryn Dayley, bass
The Senior Art and Awards show is on Thursday, April 19th starting at 6pm at Heartland Credit Union on Maize Road. Come out to see the creative work created by our senior artists!
The class of 2025 seniors will have their cap and gown pictures taken on Tuesday, April 1st at MHS. The cameras will be set up starting at 7am. This is also an opportunity for students to sign off on their picture for the graduate panel and ensure their name is correctly spelled for the graduation program.
We have started the Kansas state assessments. Students in grade 10 will complete assessments in English Language Arts and Math, while students in grade 11 will take the science assessment.
On Friday, April 4th, we will NOT have early release from Flex. Students will report to their Flex class after Block 2 as they would on a regular school day.
Our last official day off from school for students will be on Monday, April 21st. This is a teacher professional learning day and students will not have school.
Graduation for the class of 2025 will be on Wednesday, May 14th at 6:30pm. Like last year, the ceremony will take place at Park City Arena (formerly known as Hartman Arena). Information about graduation and their activities will be coming out soon.
Finals Schedule
We will once again have a finals schedule at the end of semester.
Starting the week of May 19th, we will send out a form for parents to excuse students on the afternoon of the testing day May 21st (if they so choose).
During finals, we will NOT call students out of class in order to limit interruptions.
Please see below for the finals schedule
Congratulations to the students who made the Term 3 honor roll! Your hard work in the classroom is admired!!
Congratulations to the boys basketball team on their 3rd place finish in class 6A!

Attendance Matters for Credit!
Students may have 5 absences per class, per 9 week term. Students will risk losing credit for classes after the 5th absence. Professional documentation is the only way to have an absence excused and not count toward credit and/or Truancy.
If you need to call out a student for an appointment we ask that you call in as early in the day as possible. We start answering phones at 7:00am. By doing this, we can ensure that your student has a pass to leave at the time you need them to leave.
If your student needs to miss an extended amount of school days please contact the attendance office in advance. We can help!
MHS Lunch Policy
Maize High School does NOT have an open lunch policy. Any student called out during 3rd block will be marked absent for the entire block unless returning with professional documentation. Parents/guardians wanting to take their student to lunch without an absence may do so by coming into the office, signing your student out, and having that student back within their 30 minute lunch period.
MHS does not accept food deliveries or outside food to be delivered to a student. Outside food may NOT be taken into the commons area during lunch time.
Flex Fridays
Flex is a for credit class for graduation. On Fridays, students have the opportunity to leave Flex early if they adhere to the following rules:
1. Students MUST check in with their flex teacher before leaving.
2. Failure to check in will result in an absence in Flex and a 1 hour detention.
3. Students can not leave if they have more than 5 absences in the current term.
4. Students can not leave if they have a tardy in any block.
5. Students must not be on the D/F list.
6. No disciplinary issues for the week.
"Flex Week" starts on Friday and runs to the following Thursday. Example, If a student is tardy to 3rd block on Friday that will count for flex NEXT Friday and not that day.
Students who do not have an immediate ride or ride the bus must stay in flex class until the final bell rings.
If you need to call out your student for flex class we ask that you do so as early in the day as possible.

April and May can be busy, stressful times for students, parents, and staff members as we prepare for the end of the school year. Seniors get some special attention as we double-check transcripts, plan graduation, and prepare for the transition to post-secondary life. Staying on track with grades and attendance can be challenging once spring weather hints at summer, so extra vigilance can pay off in dividends as all students work toward individual goals. NCAA Eligibility for Student Athletes
Many student athletes wish to compete at the highest levels in college sports; however, NCAA Division I and Division II sports have high standards of academic achievement that require special attention to class selection and GPA throughout a student’s high school career. Please click on these NCAA Division I and Division II Fact Sheets for a quick overview of current standards, and contact your school counselor early on with questions regarding potential eligibility.
College and Career
College & Career Center
We have started the last nine weeks of the 2024-2025 school year! What does that mean for you?
It is time to assess the success of this school year. How did you do? Can you do more, or should you scale back? Will you become more involved in clubs and organizations next year? Don’t forget about building your resume. This will pay off when you begin applying for scholarships in your senior year.
It is also time to think about how you will spend your summer. Will you take a summer class, find a job to develop new skills, look for volunteer opportunities, or look for some type of internship?
Summer is a great time to begin looking at colleges. It is never too early! You often need to plan ahead when you are visiting colleges. Call the Admissions office and set up a tour.
For this year's juniors, the college application process opens up on July 1st. Will it be a goal of yours to complete college application(s) before you get busy with your senior year?
There are still opportunities to attend Junior and Senior Days at many local colleges. If you need assistance, please stop by and see your College and Career Advocate. We are happy to help!
Visits scheduled through the College and Career Center:
April 10th- Registered sophomores, juniors, and seniors will visit Pittsburg State University.
April 16th - Senior Job Fair from 9:00 a.m. - noon for seniors interested in entering the workforce full-time after graduation, as well as those who would like to work full time while they attend college. Students are asked to bring a resume with them to the career fair. Our business partners attending the Career Fair currently have full-time employment opportunities available for you upon graduation. The College & Career Center is a great place to create or finalize your resume's details.
April 23rd - sophomores, juniors, and seniors will visit Buter Community College. Registration will be emailed out soon.

Maize Illness policy from the Student Handbook: 15.1 Illness
Students who are ill should never be sent to school. Students who come to the nurse and have a temperature at or above 100 degrees will be sent home. Students must be fever free for 24 hours without the help of fever reducing medications before returning to school. The school health rooms are set up to give first aid to the sick and injured, do screenings, and administer medications and care to students with chronic health issues. Ill students need to be picked up quickly to prevent the spread of disease to others. The school attempts to provide a safe and accident- free environment. For further policy information please visit the Maize District website.
- If you are unsure, always call the school nurse before sending an ill student to school at (316) 350-2123 or (316) 350-2137.

Zero Reasons Why
You are no doubt a parent or caregiver who deeply cares about the wellbeing of a teenager. As an adult who cares, there are many ways you can help improve the mental health of the teens in your life.
Zero Reasons Why is a teen led organization seeking to break the stigma of mental health. The teens involved in the campaign believe one of the biggest barriers to their mental health is when parents or caregivers don’t recognize mental health as a real or valid health concern. Having an honest, empathetic conversation about mental health with their parents can be challenging, let alone accessing additional support like therapy when needed. For information on the Zero Reasons Why campaign and for support in having conversations related to mental health with your teen please visit #zeroreasonswhy.org
Do you know the mental health supports available at Maize High School? Did you know there is a mental health intervention team member in each school grades 5-12? For more information on the MHIT program please email your behavioral health liaison Ashleigh Hughbanks at ahughbanks@usd266.com

Chris McKinney, LMSW District Therapist of High Schools
Hey! I'm Chris. I'm a K State grad and have been in the mental health field for over 10 years now working in community mental health, private practice, and child welfare. My role as a district therapist for Maize is through a grant from KSDE that allows me to provide individual therapy for students at school during their school day. The idea is that students receive support that they otherwise may not receive due to time, transportation, or financial barriers. I'm married to my wife of 6 years, 2 children and we live in Maize. You will often see us out riding bikes, running, shooting hoops, splashing at the maize splash pad or taking in a blizzard on the dairy queen patio as those are some of our favorite activities!

Ashleigh Hughbanks, LMSW Behavioral Health Liaison
Hello! I'm Ashleigh, the behavioral health liaison for MHS and Complete High School Maize. This is my 4th school year in the Maize district. I have a bachelor's in psychology and a master's in social work. I'm 8 years into my career and in that time I have been blessed to serve in community crisis, hospice care, juvenile detention, schools, and in private practice. My role at MHS is to connect students to mental health resources, be a positive support to students and families, and problem solve ways to best help students be successful. My goal is to create an environment where it's ok to not be ok, and make students and families aware of the many supports available in our district. I am thankful to have been a sponsor for the Zero Reasons Why Club, working with students from MHS and MSHS to remove the stigma surrounding mental health. I've been married to my hubs for 27 years and live in Maize. I love football and wrestling and miss watching my 3 boys compete now that they are all adults. I love the outdoors, rain or shine, I'm outside! And I'm so thankful to work for a district that is so supportive of mental wellness. Thank you for allowing me to support your students!

Jennifer Mackey, LMSW, LMAC
I am the substance use / mental health therapist for USD 266. This is a new position created this year. My role is to assist kiddos that have violated the school substance use policy or have a
direct need for assistance with their substance use. What my goal is, is to keep kiddos in school and be the contact and advocate to assist them in what the students' individual needs are to help
them be successful. I can refer to community resources, provide therapeutic services, be a check in for stress relief, assist with maneuvering their school probation requirements and just be a safe
place they can come to and vent.
I have worked in the substance use world for over 15 years and have advocated for persons with drug use / addiction to not be viewed as "bad" but rather just need to figure out how to adapt to
the issues that make them choose a drug as a coping mechanism.

Summer Driver Education
2025 SUMMER DRIVER EDUCATION
USD 266 Maize Schools will once again offer summer driver education. Any student who
turns 14 on or before Monday, May 16, 2025 will be eligible to enroll in summer driver
education.
Students will have 25 days (April 16th - May 11th) to complete the coursework online
through Google Classroom. Students failing to complete the online portion by May 11th
will be dropped from the class and forfeit the entire enrollment fee. Students will also
complete four, one hour driving sessions (schedule to be determined after class begins).
The student’s assigned instructor will be in contact about available driving days and
times. We prefer that students get an instructional permit at the DMV in advance of the
class and spend as much time as possible driving in safe locations with their parents.
Practicing with parents before class starts is a plus considering that driver education is
only four hours of driving. Students with 5+ hours of driving time are much more
successful in passing the driving portion of the class, than those with only 1-2 hours of
practice.
Enrollment will be offered on a first come, first serve basis with enrollment limited to the
first 150 students to register. Enrollment registration will open at 8:00 AM on Monday,
March 31, 2025 and will close on Friday, April 4, 2025 or when enrollment capacity has
been reached. Please enroll early as the class will fill up fast. To register go to
https://forms.gle/ZpF9gZPF3X91FgXw5
(form not accessible until April 1st at 8 AM).
Mandatory Enrollment Meeting
The first 150 students to register will receive a Google invite to attend the mandatory
enrollment meeting on Wednesday, April 16, 2025 at 6:00 PM in the Maize South High
School Auditorium. A parent or guardian and the student MUST commit to attending this
meeting. Failure to attend the meeting will result in the student being dropped from the
class.
At the meeting, we will discuss the driving schedule, the Kansas Driver's Handbook Test,
online class expectations, answer questions regarding the online enrollment form,
collect the $250 enrollment fee, administer eye tests (please bring corrective eyewear if
needed), and have you sign the enrollment forms. Students will need to bring any type
of license or permit they might already have to the meeting.
The cost of summer driver education is $250 with payment due in full on the date of the
meeting. Students who qualify for free or reduced lunches may apply for a reduced fee
of $100 during the enrollment process. No registrations or late payments will be
accepted after the mandatory enrollment meeting on Wednesday, April 16, 2025
Kansas Driver Handbook Test
Students who don’t have a valid instruction permit or who have an instruction permit
that will expire prior to the end of the summer drivers education will be required to take
the Kansas Driver Handbook Test - Wednesday, April 16, 2025 at 6:00 PM. This test will
be administered in person AFTER THE PARENT ENROLLMENT MEETING in the commons
of Maize South High School. Students who are required to take the test must pass the
Kansas Handbook Test at a minimum Mastery Level of 80% in order to complete the
course. The student will be given three opportunities to successfully complete this test.
For a digital copy of the Kansas Driver Handbook, please click the link below. Print copies
of the handbook may be purchased at any local Drivers License Exam Station.

Morning Bus Traffic Reminder
Please be mindful and YIELD the right of way to the buses when they arrive in the morning. Please DO NOT try to dart in between the buses. Allowing the buses to pull into the parking lot and proceed to the south entry doors is priority. Thank you - Crossing Guard Staff
2nd Chance Breakfast
The second chance breakfast is a great opportunity for our students that arrive late. The kitchen will be open 9am to 9:20am,we ask that students only come down during their block 2 passing period (if they missed early morning breakfast which is 7:10am to 7:30) and not their bathroom breaks.
