Principal Message
After School Detention- M-TH- 3:45-4:45
Dear Jefferson Families,
We hope this message finds you well and that you had a restful and enjoyable Fall break. As we continue to work toward our shared goal of ensuring all students are successful and prepared for their future careers or post-high school education, we are making some important adjustments to our school discipline policy starting this week.
Beginning this week, we are implementing after-school detention for students who are not meeting our expectations for behavior, attendance, and academic engagement. After-school detention will take priority over any extracurricular activities, including athletic or performing arts practices, games, or rehearsals. If a student is assigned detention, they will be expected to attend, regardless of their after-school commitments.
Our decision to move detention to after school comes after careful consideration of current trends, including ongoing issues with tardies, class skips, and other behaviors that are not aligning with our high standards. We hope that by increasing the consequences for missed class time and poor behavior, students will be more motivated to make positive changes before being assigned detention.
Key Points:
- After-school detention will take precedence over extracurricular activities, meaning if a student has detention, they must attend, even if they have practice or a game.
- Students must take responsibility for their after-school detention assignments if served.
- We are making this change because lunch detention has not proven effective in deterring negative behaviors, and we believe that after-school detention will have a stronger impact.
- Attendance remains a significant concern, and tardies/skipping are leading to gaps in student learning. Regular attendance is a key factor for success in high school and in preparing for life beyond graduation, whether students choose to enter the workforce or pursue further education.
- Our primary goal is to help students understand that responsible behavior and strong attendance habits are essential skills that will serve them well in both high school and their future careers.
We are grateful for your continued support in helping our students develop the skills they need to succeed. As we look ahead, we will continue to work together to ensure that Jefferson is a place where all students can grow and thrive.
If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us. Thank you for your partnership in this important work.
Sincerely,
Drake Shelton
Principal, Jefferson High School
