Wiggin Street Parent Update
May 17, 2024
Better Together
Dear Wiggin Street Families,
What a wonderful week of field trips and May fun! We also learned this week that although the contractor will be on site after Memorial Day for the Roundabout, the road closure is not expected until June 3rd, so transportation may not be affected for this school year.
Next week is our last full week of school for this school year. There are still lots of fun things planned for our last 8 days of school, so make sure you check out our upcoming events.
Have a great weekend,
Christy Grandstaff
3rd Grade MV History/Community Services Field Trip
4th Grade Ag Day
Heartland 5th Grade Camp
Having a Tea Party!
Mrs. Pugh visited Mrs. Clippinger's class and had a Tea Party. They practiced having appropriate conversations with each other.
Ms. Clippinger and 3rd Grade Board Game Day
While Mrs. Treber is away, we have the pleasure of having Ms. Clippinger as her sub. Yes, she is Mrs. Clippinger's daughter who just graduated with a teaching degree! Also, the 3rd grade enjoyed a Board Game Day.
4th Quarter PBIS Event: Duct Tape and a Frozen Treat
Students are working this quarter for 50 PBIS points. The reward is a piece of Duct Tape to participate in Duct Taping me to a wall. While I'm hanging out, LOL, they will enjoy a frozen treat at recess. The culminating event will be when they come back in and pass through the hallway to see me all duct taped!
Field Day is May 22nd!
National Park Camping
As the culminating event for the Kindergarten City Project, as Travel Agents, 5th graders are planning a "camping vacation" to a National Park for the Kindergarten and 3rd Grade Buddies. A simulation will be held on the school playground that includes roasting hot dogs and marshmallows over a real campfire, Camp Music, Camp Games, Wading Pools, a Storyteller, Birdwatching, and a National Park Trail to learn about each one!
The campfire has been approved by the Mount Vernon Fire Department with the following guidelines:
1. size - three feet in diameter by two feet in height.
2. Only clean seasoned firewood or the equivalent can be burned (to keep the smoke down).
3. Need to have an extinguishing agent, water hose, sand or some other extinguishment method on site. (would suggest a water can extinguisher or two)
4. Constantly attended until extinguishment.
5. I would recommend a fire ring, or some other way to contain the fire not just on the ground. and precautions taken to keep the fire from spreading.
The campfire will be manned the entire time.
Good News! Road Closure slated to now begin June 3rd!
Update: It looks like the contractor will be on site after Memorial Day but closure is not expected until June 3rd so transportation may not be affected for this school year.
Village council held a special session on Monday April 22nd at 7pm to update the community regarding the construction at the intersection of Route 229 and Wiggin Street between May 28, 2024 and November. The construction will require road closure, and the session covered how travel will be impacted to and from the village. KnoxPages covered the session and published this article. More information can be found here on the Kenyon website.
Lost and Found
Our Lost and Found is overflowing again! Please have your child check for missing coats and sweatshirts. All items will be donated in June.
Kids to Parks Day this Saturday
Come and enjoy some local recreation at the Kids to Parks Day on Saturday, May 18th! The goal is to promote and engage youth and families in actively pursuing the outdoors of Mount Vernon. Come and play some fun noodle activities with Mrs. Barbour and Mr. Evans, Mt. Vernon PE Teachers. You can also learn about bike safety and receive a bike helmet from PAK United. Bring your bike and your tennis shoes! Hope to see you there! The event is at Harmony Playground and goes from 8:45-10:45 am.
