For this reason, we want to alert you to the possibility of the School District of Philadelphia deciding to give our students, staff and their families the chance to witness history. If this does occur, Northwood Academy Charter School and administrative offices will follow the School District of Philadelphia's closing date and times.
Additionally, Northwood will observe a 2-hour delay on Monday, February 13th for all staff and students. The School District of Philadelphia will also be operating on a 2-hour delay on Monday, February 13th. As such, all Transportation services will also operate on a 2-hr delay. Go Birds!

Imagine a Clean Energy Future student contest- Grades 5-8 (Deadline 2/28)
As you know, solar is one of the fastest-growing energy sources. To help students engage with a sustainable future, Philadelphia Solar Energy Association (PSEA) has launched a student contest to Imagine a Clean Energy Future. In order to build a sustainable future, we have to see it. T
he contest has three categories:
1. Visual Arts: all visual media accepted: drawings, paintings, collages, etc.
2. Language Arts: 500 words or less essay, poem, or other written format
3. Video: 90 seconds or less showing an invention, concept, learning center, or other ideas that will help us build a clean energy future.
The contest is open to all students in grades 5 - 8. Students may submit entries in one, two, or all three categories. Prizes will be awarded in the spring during Earth Week. PSEA will also be exhibiting the students' work at a venue in Center City Philadelphia this spring.
The deadline is February 28, 2023.

This Internet safety webinar for parents and guardians, Family Tech Talk, is free for our school community and helps parents and guardians learn what kids are doing online and how to help keep them safe. Registration is free!

Winter Reading Challenge
Please Touch Museum: Pixar’s Inside Out Exhibit January 27 – May 7, 2023
The first-ever museum exhibition based on Disney and Pixar’s movie Inside Out comes to Please Touch Museum! Explore emotions including Joy, Sadness, Anger, Disgust, and Fear through hands-on interactives, including glowing memory spheres, a train of thought, emotion blocks and mirrors, and more. Access to Emotions at Play is included with museum admission. The exhibition visits the Please Touch Museum through May 7, 2023, and was developed by the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh in collaboration with Pixar Animation Studios. About Inside Out:
Pixar’s hit animated feature Inside Out is the story of 11-year-old Riley, who like all of us, is guided by her emotions — Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust, and Sadness. The emotions live in Headquarters, the control center inside Riley’s mind, where they help advise her through everyday life. Riley and her emotions struggle to adjust to a new life in San Francisco as Joy, Riley’s main and most important emotion, tries to keep things positive. Inside Out was released in 2015.

This is a great opportunity if you have older children 16-24 years old.
Screenings and training are free of charge and occur after school and in the evenings.

You must be 15 years or older to attend a lifeguard screening at one of our indoor training pools. You must be 16 years or older to work as a lifeguard for the City of Philadelphia.
Lifeguard Screening:
You must be able to complete the following skills to pass the screening:
• Swim 300 yards non-stop. (12 laps of freestyle or breaststroke). This is not a timed swim, but you must continuously swim the 12 lengths and not stop or you will need to start over.
• Tread water for two minutes using only your legs with your hands.
• Retrieve a 10-pound brick from a deep well. Return to the surface and swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the brick, using only your legs. The brick must be held out of the water with both hands. You must complete this task within one minute and 40 seconds.
Once you have passed the screening you will be contacted to begin a Lifeguard Certification Class.
Lifeguard Skills Practice:
Register for time with our Water Safety Instructors to practice the skills needed to pass the screening test. This is optional and not required to advance in the lifeguard certification process. Skills practice is free of charge.
Lifeguard Certification Class:
Classes are conducted on a rolling basis. After successfully completing your screening we will contact you about the next Lifeguard Certification Class.
Lifeguards ages 16–24 who commit to and work at a Parks & Rec pool:
- Certification: FREE.
- Recertification: FREE.

Save the Date: Black Generational Wealth Series 2023 – Feb 25th
The Black Generational Wealth Series is part of the Mayor’s Office of Black Male Enagement’s My Brother’s Keeper (MBK) Action Academy. MBK Action Academy aims to close the opportunity divide for Black men and boys in Philadelphia. This day-long event will bring together government and community leaders to offer workshops, resources, and networking opportunities across the city that are relevant to Philadelphia’s Black men and boys.
While The Black Generational Wealth Series is targeted toward Black men, all residents are welcome to attend. All three events are free, and registration is available online.

What is Safe2Say Something?
Safe2Say Something is a youth violence prevention program run by the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General. The program teaches youth and adults how to recognize warning signs and signals, especially within social media, from individuals who may be a threat to themselves or others and to “say something” BEFORE it is too late. With 'Safe2Say Something', it’s easy and confidential to report safety concerns to help prevent violence and tragedies.
Here’s how it works:
- Submit an anonymous tip report through the Safe2SaySomething system
- The crisis center reviews and processes all submissions
- The crisis center sends all submissions to school administration and/or law enforcement for intervention
- If needed, the crisis center may contact the tipster anonymously through the app
