Notes from Dr. Zaragoza
Team Berkmar!
I hope you all had a relaxing Spring Break and have recharged for the last stretch of the school year! There is much to do in so little time, but you all are on it! Remember to focus on essentials and help our students take advantage of the remaining time left and make the most of the ABCs (Attendance, Behavior, and Course Performance)! I have copied reminders below with the term "(REPEAT)" so you all know what has already been shared. I look forward to continuing to learn more about each of you and helping make Berkmar get better each and every day to be a great place to LEARN and WORK!
-Gabe

Leave Procedures – GCPS Critical Days (REPEAT)
To be in alignment with GCPS Procedures, all GCPS Critical Days on the GCPS calendar will require doctor’s notes as Personal Leave is Not Allowed. After Spring Break, we will need to have copies of doctor’s notes (just the general note, no personal information included) for personnel files to accompany all Sick Leave Requests moving forward. Personal leave is not permitted on GCPS critical dates and will not be able to be approved.
Leave Approvers Update (REPEAT)
Starting after Spring Break, all staff should select their designated administrator to request leave. All administrators will be listed on the drop down menu. This will help support consistency of leave procedures and ensure your administrator is able to support your departments more quickly.
Duty Assignments Reminder (REPEAT)
For Safety & Security, please remember to be at your arrival, lunch, and/or dismissal duty on time. We are setting the standard and expectation to our students. Also, between class changes, please be at your door. Our Administrative team will also be monitoring all zones throughout the day and provide additional support. The more visibility we have, the more support we can provide students by being proactive.

We must demonstrate to our students our commitment to fulfilling our duties and provide accountability measures.
Dress Code Reminder (REPEAT)
Remember that Fridays are our Spirit Wear and Jeans Days! If you have stickers purchased through Relay for Life or other incentives, please be sure to use them before the end of the year! 📅SAVE THE DATE - Spring Assessment Training (April 15)📅
Due to the high volume of testing improprieties across the state, it has been suggested by the Assessment Office that we give a "refresher" training to all who will be involved with end of semester testing. In the next few weeks, we will begin the last set of assessments for 2nd semester: Milestones, AP Exams, Senior Exams, DAs - Spring Final Exams.
We will hold planning period meetings on Tuesday, April 15 in Screening Room A. ALL staff members who are associated with students taking assessments should be present (i.e. teachers, interpreters, paraprofessionals). You will be required to sign new documents to end this semester.
See you then!
📆SAVE THE DATES - Milestones Examiner Training (During CLTs)📆
Examiner training for Milestones core classes will take place during CLTs next week following the schedule below:

Please see the image below which is an excerpt from both the Faculty Handbook (page 21) and the Student Handbook (pages 13-14). This information can be found in the section titled "Spring 2025: Final Exam Schedule". This information will be posted to students' eClass pages to remind them of the expectations for exam exemption.
REMEMBER: Exam exemptions are a privilege, not a right.
Gifted and AP- Mr. Sava
Please use the link below if you would like to refer a student for gifted testing. There are four questions: student's name, ID, grade, and any additional pertinent information (which can be marked N/A). ***Note that we will no longer be accepting referrals for seniors.
24-25 Berkmar HS Student Referral for Gifted Testing
As you are considering students for gifted testing referral, please review the following characteristics of gifted learners from various student groups regarding MATURITY:
Traditional Gifted Learners may mature at different rates than their same-age peers.
Culturally/Linguistically Diverse Gifted Learners accept responsibilities in the home generally reserved for older children.
Low Socio-Economic (F/R) Gifted Learners often mature earlier than their same-age peers since they must accept responsibilities in the home, which are normally reserved for older children or adults; inexperience may make them appear socially immature.
Gifted Learners with Disabilities sometimes appear immature since they may use anger, crying, withdrawal, etc., to express feelings and to deal with difficulties.
Special Education Updates & Tips - Ms. Rodriguez
A tip for the week when supporting/collaborating with DHH students and staff: Sometimes when we are speaking with our students, we have something in our hands to demonstrate - a paper to complete, a picture to identify, or a manipulative to use - these items can interfere with your students' line of sight to your face (and comprehension).
How can you help? If you are simultaneously speaking and holding papers or texts (or other materials), keep them at lower chest level so that they do not obstruct students’ line of sight to your face.

Berkmar’s Unsung Hero!
Dr. McDonald is a fierce advocate for the students of Berkmar. She works hard to ensure students receive the support and accommodations that they need by working with teachers, parents, and specialists. Dr. McDonald's efforts and hard work often go unseen, but the impact can be seen in the classroom and in the lives of our students. On a personal note, Dr. McDonald is more than a colleague; she is a good friend who makes sure to check on m when life and work get busy and always texts to make sure I'm alright if I'm not in my office in the mornings.
