Taking Stock: July 2024 - Update
July 2024
Ms McIntosh's Update
We are nearing the end of the school year, and as I look back over the year, we have a lot to be proud of. Whether we are celebrating our inclusivity and diversity through the curriculum, or event days, skilling up parents through workshops, building our links with the wider community through trips and visits, or developing our own skills and knowledge, there is always something happening at Stockwell.
Last week, we met some of the runners from the Running Out of Time Climate Relay. The relay started in Ben Nevis, in Scotland and ended at Big Ben. We were one of the last stops along the way. The team met with the Eco Team to talk about the challenges of Climate Change and how children can help. The Eco Squad were keen to show off our Eco Refill Shop and share the products they sell.
The Year 4 team had loads of fun with the Nationwide Trash mob. They completed an activity with the Plastic Free School’s, Surfers Against Sewage team.
They went around the school collecting litter, learning that lots of this is washed up on the beaches.
A number of children have expressed concern about our pond and the litter that accumulates inside it. Please watch this space for an exciting update in the near future.
We took part in our cluster Spelling Bee, competing against a number of other local schools. Competition was fierce, but the Stockwell children held their own, coming in second overall. and were just 3 points from 1st.
Well done team!
It has been trips, trips and more trips! Everywhere I look, teachers are ensuring that the children of Stockwell are given great opportunities and make the most of the world around them. Seeing the curriculum in action, and making links with the real world, are huge parts of what we do. It is very important that the children understand the context of what they are learning, how it relates to the adult world and how it opens possibilities up for the future.
I would like to say a HUGE thank you to all of the staff that make these trips possible, but also to the parents and carers that give up their time to accompany the children.
Last week, despite the weather, Year 3 went off to London Zoo and Year 1 went all the way to Brighton.
The previous week, Year 5 visited the Black Cultural Archives and went on an Art walk through Brixton Market, before heading off to perform at the Southbank Centre just two days later.
Year 6 have been to Chessington and Go Ape, Year 4 visited the cinema and are going to the Southbank Centre this week and Year 2 are heading off for a trip on a River Boat!
Still to come, Year 4 are off on another trip to spend their hard won Enterprise profits, Year 3 are going to Brockwell Park and Reception are off to the farm.
We held our annual Caribbean celebration, in honour of Windrush Day. The afternoon began with the Year 5 Carnival assembly, in which the Year 5 children shared their learning about the Caribbean and the experiences of people that came to Britain as part of the Windrush Celebration. The children shared their learning from different parts of the curriculum. They had taken part in dance and patty making workshops in the run up to the event and continued to sell their Caribbean inspired 'Bag Juice' at the event.
We then followed the children round to the Play Zone, where the party continued. There was food in abundance, and parents, carers and friends got involved in drumming, in the playground.
It was a wonderful way to celebrate the school's Caribbean community and it was lovely to see people from across the school attending. Remember, everyone is welcome at all of our events.
Our Summer Fair is taking place on Friday 19th July. I hope to see lots of you there. Don't forget to come and have a look at the children's hard work at the Art, DT and Topic Exhibition on Friday 12th July.

We are once again taking part in the Lambeth Summer Reading Challenge.
This year’s Challenge is called Marvellous Makers and it’s all about creativity! From dance to drawing, junk modelling to music, there’s something for everyone. The Challenge starts on Saturday 6 July.
Have you used any of the services at Stockwell, Liz Atkinson or Jessop Children's Centre? If you have, we would love to get some feedback from you. Please complete the online Parent Satisfaction Survey, selecting the Brixton Stockwell Area and tell us what you think.
Don't forget to drop off your old, unwanted clothes. The donations will go to new homes that need them and we will raise money for the school.
Fill up a bag and pop it in.

Hope
If you hope that something is true, or if you hope for something, you want it to be true or to happen, and you usually believe that it is possible or likely.
Hope is a feeling of wanting and believing that things will go well in the future.
Subject Spotlight
Computing
Computing at Stockwell Primary School provides students with a strong
foundation in digital literacy, coding, and computational thinking. Our curriculum is designed
to equip pupils with the necessary skills to navigate and contribute to the digital world
effectively.
Key Stages and Curriculum Structure
Key Stage 1 (Year 1 and 2)
- Basic Digital Literacy: Students learn essential computer skills and how to use technology safely.
- Simple Algorithms: Pupils begin to understand and create simple programs.
- Logical Reasoning: Students use logical reasoning to predict how programs will behave.
- Safe and Responsible Use: Emphasis on e-safety and protecting personal information.
Key Stage 2 (Years 3-6)
- Advanced Digital Literacy: Students create and manage digital content using various
- software tools.
- Programming and Algorithms: Pupils design, write, and debug more complex programs, incorporating sequences, selection, repetition, and variables.
- Understanding Computer Networks: Students learn about basic network concepts, including the internet and web services.
- Problem Solving and Computational Thinking: Developing problem-solving skills and understanding algorithms.
- E-Safety: Continuing to reinforce knowledge of e-safety and responsible online behaviour.
Teaching Methods
- Interactive Learning: Lessons include interactive activities, such as coding exercises with visual programming languages like Scratch, and unplugged activities that teach computational thinking without computers.
- Cross-Curricular Links: Computing is integrated into other subjects, allowing
- technology to support learning across the curriculum. For example, using spreadsheets in Maths or creating presentations for topic projects.
- Practical Application: Students are encouraged to apply their learning to real-world
- problems and projects, fostering creativity and critical thinking.
- Resources and Tools
- Educational Software: Programs like Scratch, Purple Mash, and other age-appropriate coding platforms.
- Hardware: Utilisation of tablets, laptops, desktops, and interactive whiteboards.
- Online Resources: A variety of online resources, including coding tutorials and interactive games, support the computing curriculum.
Assessment
Formative Assessment: Ongoing assessment through observation, classwork, and discussions to monitor student progress.
Computing at Stockwell Primary School aims to equip students with the skills and knowledge
needed to thrive in an increasingly digital world.

A Whole School Approach to Anti Bullying
Trolling is the act of making inflammatory comments or behaving in an abusive manner online to hurt the feelings of others or provoke a reaction from them It is estimated that in 2022, over a third (34%) of people in the UK who suffered online abuse were specifically victims of trolling. The repercussions of this type of online abuse can be severe, which is why it is imperative that parents and educators have the tools to mitigate the risk of harm to children and young people.
Check out this leaflet for information on how to to protect children and young people if they encounter it themselves, helping them minimise the impact of this hurtful behaviour.
Parent and Carer Support
Friends of Stockwell PTA
We have an active PTA, called Friends of Stockwell, who do a brilliant job of fundraising for the school and bringing the community together. Last year, every child was given a £5 donation to reduce the cost of trips; the PTA contributed to class Christmas presents; they also raised money for vulnerable families at Christmas.
It is great to see new faces getting involved. Every parent is a Friend of Stockwell. I ask that everyone gets involved. If you can spare an hour per term (that's three hours per year), your contribution would make a huge difference.
Please email friendsofstockwell@gmail.com to get involved.

Attendance
Central to raising standards in all schools and ensuring all pupils can fulfil their potential is the need for children to attend school regularly to benefit from their education.
There is a strong link between good learning, high achievement, rapid progress and developing good social skills with excellent attendance.
We want to take this opportunity to outline our expectations for school attendance this academic year.
If your child arrives at school from 9.02am they will be marked as LATE, if they arrive after 9.30am, they will be classed as “late after the register is closed” and their attendance is classed as absent for the morning session. As the registers would have already been returned to the Department for Education.
Regular poor punctuality can also have a negative effect on your child’s attendance as well as their academic learning. Being 6 minutes late each day equals 30 minutes of missed learning every week.
If your child’s attendance drops below 90%, we will need to share our concerns with the Local Authority Education Welfare Officer at Lambeth Council.
Attendance Winners
Our overall attendance last week was 95%. Let's see if we can maintain or improve on this as we approach the end of the school year.
EYFS Attendance Winners
RB - 99%
KS1 Attendance Winners
2B - 98%
LKS2 Attendance Winners
4H and 3T - 99%
UKS2 Attendance Winners
5P - 98%
School Uniform
School uniform should be worn throughout the school day. While we do not enforce that all school uniform should be branded, children should be wearing the correct colours (white t-shirt tops, navy trousers/ skirts/ pinafore dresses, sensible black shoes). Football boots/ coloured trainers are not school uniform and should not be worn.
Children should be changing into their PE kits for PE lessons (blue or black tracksuit bottoms, plain white t-shirt, trainers). We have made arrangements for girls and boys to be able to change separately, so the expectation is that all children change for PE.
While our supplier of school uniform is WearAbouts, we do have some items available for sale from the school office. Please check with us to see if we have what you need in stock.
Reporting a Concern
If you have a concern, please see your child's class teacher in the first instance. If they are unable to resolve the problem, please speak to your child's phase leader.
If they are unable to help, please see one of the school's Assistant Headteachers.
If you are still dissatisfied, please see the Acting Head of School.
