March 2025
A Note from our Principal
After a very cold February that was made even shorter due to snow days, it’s nice to see “March” on the calendar and welcome warm air! Spring Break will be here before we know it, but we’ve got some good things to share with you before we get there.
But first I want to celebrate all the new babies we’ve had had in the last few weeks. Nurse Emily Graber welcomed her son Max, and brother Henry and Colt celebrated with us here at school. Then 4th Grade teacher Holly Espinoza welcomed Juliette last week, and the next day 2nd Grade teacher Taylor Danielsen welcomed daughter Else. Her son Mads announced his new sister’s name, which was special. We’ve also had several students welcome new siblings in the last few weeks. We’re excited for all of these families and look forward to a new batch of CES students in a few years!
Now, onto March…… on March 11 we’ll have an Open House from 6:00-8:00 PM. We welcome all parents and guardians to come see what their child has been working on, studying, exploring, and making. This is a great chance to let your child show you their desk area and classroom, share about their day, give you a tour of the building, and point out their displayed work. Then, we’ll have a PTO meeting on March 13th at 7:00 in the library. After Spring Break, things really pick up with Kindergarten Preview Night and our Family Literacy Night happening in early April.
As the weather warms, please make sure your child has clothing for all the different temperatures. It may be chilly and 40 during morning recess, but 70 by the afternoon. We still have the heat on in the building, so warm days might mean stuffy classrooms for a bit longer. Luckily open windows will help, but please consider layers for your child.
We wish you a wonderful start to Spring and a fantastic Spring Break with your family!
With education at heart,
Dr. Michelle Adler

March Counselor Corner
In March, we will begin a focused discussion on anger management. I will introduce students to strategies that help them de-escalate when they feel out of control. Additionally, we will address self-esteem, an area where many students face challenges. Self-esteem is how we perceive and value ourselves.
Students in grades 3, 4, and 5 will participate in the Kansas State Assessments. Mrs. Faust will be sending home an informational letter detailing the state assessments. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to Mrs. Faust, Dr. Adler, or the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade teachers. This communication will help parents understand both the assessments and the academic expectations for our students. To ensure the best performance, please make sure your child is present each day during testing, has a healthy breakfast, and gets adequate rest. Testing will begin after Spring Break, so kindly remember to return the permission slips that I sent home. If you need another copy or have any questions, please let me know.
We are also participating in the Cereal Challenge this month. Information about this event has been sent home in a letter, and additional details are available on our Facebook page and the Cottonwood website.
On Monday, March 3rd, from 1:15–3:15 PM, the Middle School Counselors will visit the fifth-grade students to discuss middle school enrollment. As the transition to middle school approaches, some students may begin to feel anxious. If your child is experiencing any anxiety, please don’t hesitate to reach out. I am more than happy to offer additional support during this transition.
Please remember to send in money on Tuesdays for the school store. The Student Council (StuCo) uses the funds to benefit CES, and support various community service projects.
Lastly, if your child requires any additional support following the conclusion of the Banana Split program, please contact me, and I will assist in providing the necessary resources.

2024 COPY::::
Dear Cottonwood families,
The health office staff has completed this year's routine screening of hearing and vision for your child. If your child did not pass the screenings, you would have received a phone call and/or written notice to follow up with a physician. On 2/12/24 Grace Med came to Cottonwood and completed
our state required Dental Screenings. All students received a toothbrush, compliments of Grace Med, and all students were sent home with a dental report. If you did not receive a dental report and did not opt out of the screening, please contact the health office with any questions.
Reminder of school policy for illness:
If your child has been ill or sent home ill from school
● Wait until your child has gone 24 hours without vomiting or running a fever
(100 degrees or above) without the aid of medication, before sending them
back to school.
● If your student is being treated with antibiotics for a contagious disease
(such as strep throat), the student may return 24 hours after the initial dose
has been administered.
● If your child tests positive for Influenza or Covid, they will need to stay
home for five days following onset of symptoms and be fever free for 24
hours.
If you have questions, feel free to contact your school nurse. We appreciate your
cooperation and communication.
As you get ready for spring cleaning and clearing out closets, consider donating clothing to health office. The health office is always in need of clean gentle used clothing. We are currently needing pants/sweatpants for both girls and boys; sizes 5-10.
Thank you!
Denis Rebel, school nurse
Emily Graber, health clerk
