Community Newsletter
Message from Dr. Caroline Cota, Superintendent
October 2024
Dear families and community members,
Last month, we were informed that the State Board of Education intends to hear the 2015 Petition for the Reorganization of Greenfield Elementary School District at their November meeting. At the request of our county Superintendent, Dr. Deneen Guss, our Board unanimously agreed at last week's Board meeting to join the original petitioners, the Monterey County Committee on School District Organization, and the Greenfield Elementary School District in signing a joint request to delay the hearing of this agenda item until January 2025. The purpose of this delay is for all parties to update the relevant information that was last reviewed in 2018, when the county committee heard the petition, and to explore opportunities to resolve the issue locally.
We anticipate a decision from the State Board regarding our delay request sometime this week. If they deny the delay, this petition will be heard on November 13 or 14. We will provide an update to the community in our newsletter at the end of November and plan to provide timely information throughout the process, should the State Board determine that the petition for Greenfield unification has merit. It is important to note that school district re-organization is a process that takes years to accomplish. Thus, many of our current students will not be affected by any decision the State Board makes this year.
While we wait for a decision by the State Board, the entire staff of South Monterey County JUHSD remains committed to ensuring the success of all of our students in King City and Greenfield. We encourage you to vote in the upcoming election as there are decisions to be made that impact our Board of Education and facility needs. We also hope to see you at upcoming parent engagement opportunities through the District Advisory Committee (DAC) and the District English Learner Advisory Committee (DELAC). Thank you for your continued partnership in pursuing success for our entire community.
Sincerely,
Dr. Caroline Cota
Superintendent

Bond Information - Measure H and I
In order for a district to place bonds on any election, the Governing Board must approve a resolution, with at least a two-thirds (2/3) vote, authorizing it to do so. Additionally, the resolution must include a project list. As stated in the resolution:
"The proceeds of the sale of the bonds shall be used only for the purposes set forth in the ballot measure and not for any other purpose, including teacher or administrator salaries or other school operating expenditures."
If the voters approve the measure, the district can proceed with construction projects. We are required to conduct an annual, independent performance audit and establish an oversight committee. The oversight committee’s responsibility is to ensure that expenditures from the bond proceeds are appropriate and align with the language of the measure.
When voters approve the bonds, they agree to additional property taxes. The two bonds currently on the ballot are each set at $30 per $100,000 of assessed valuation. For example, a property with an assessed valuation of $450,000 will pay:
$450,000 / $100,000 = 4.5 x $30 = $135.00 per year ($270.00 if both bonds pass).
Facility Update
Greenfield High School received a $150,000 Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) grant. A committee, formed with the Monterey County Health Department and GHS administration, including students, decided to invest the funds in new library furniture. The furniture was installed this month.
The CTE Shade Structure at GHS was delivered last week. The contractor was onsite on October 14, 2024, to address punch list items, and the grading contractor completed compacting the base rock while adjusting the existing storm drain catch basin.
Installation of electrical lines for the lunch shelter at GHS also began this week.
We are still working on closing out old projects without DSA approval to move forward with the Training Room and Science Classroom projects at KCHS. Additionally, a small drainage project near the Library at KCHS has been completed.

Boost Parent Engagement
Donations and Prizes Needed!
To boost parent engagement in our schools, we are encouraging attendance at meetings with opportunities to win prizes that families can enjoy together. If you own a business or would like to donate gift cards, certificates, or other items that could benefit our parents and students, we invite you to drop off these contributions at the district office.
As a nonprofit organization, we will provide a donation acknowledgment letter for tax purposes. This is also a great chance to promote your business or organization as the holiday season approaches.
Our goal is to create a welcoming atmosphere for parents to learn about our district while enjoying the opportunity to win a prize. Thank you for supporting our efforts to strengthen family engagement!
