What We're Reading: VPL Staff Book Chats
We tried something new this Spring and started a staff book club! We read "The Art of Gathering" by Priya Parker. This book was highly recommended by a speaker at this year's ILOC (Iowa Libraries Online Conference), and examines meetings, parties and events through the framework of building connections. I chose it for our first book since our mission is to provide a welcoming environment to grow and strengthen connections for everyone in our community. It was fun to discuss the book together at our staff meetings, and we'll plan on reading more books together in the future!

I recently finished "The Last Thing He Told Me" by Laura Dave. This novel tells the story of Hannah, a woman who receives a cryptic message from her husband following his sudden and mysterious disappearance. She follows every possible lead as she remains determined in her efforts to find her missing husband. Hannah's unexpected ally in her investigation is her 16-year-old stepdaughter, Bailey. What I enjoyed most about this book, beyond the page-turning suspense, was watching the relationship between Hannah and Bailey grow from a source of tension to a source of strength. This book is a Reese's Book Club pick, and currently has 3.84/5 stars on Goodreads. It has recently been adapted into a series starring Jennifer Garner on Apple TV.
Happy Reading!

This book, "Dragon Pearl" by Yoon Ha Lee, is highly recommended by Rick Riordan, and that's really all a young reader of fantasy needs to know! This is the first of a series of books about Thousand Worlds, where a young girl named Min dreams of going. Her family's planet, Jinju, is dusty and desperate, wasting away.
Min's family are fox spirits, which gives them special abilities, to space shift and to Charm. These are very useful, but Min's mother forbids the use of magic, fearing the consequences if their identity as foxes is discovered. By using Charm, Min can smell emotions on people, and in the first few pages, Min smells trouble. A stranger appears at their door, asking questions and demanding answers. The investigator has information; the Dragon Pearl, thought to be a legend, has resurfaced!
Min's brother Jun, who was overjoyed to be accepted into the Thousand Worlds' Space Forces as a cadet, has been accused of desertion. Because he and Min have talked about being cadets for many years, his family knows this is not true. Min yearns to join the Space Forces as well but is too young. At thirteen, she has two long years to wait until she is old enough to take the entrance exams.
Something must be done! Min decides to sneak away and clear the name of her brother and the family. In the words of author Rick Riordan, "Dragon Pearl will be like nothing you've ever read: a zesty mix of Korean folklore, magic, and science fiction that will leave you longing for more adventures in the Thousand Worlds!"

"Rest and Be Thankful" by Emma Glass is a harrowing novella by a talented young writer with a distinct writing style that I thoroughly enjoyed! Laura is a nurse in the pediatric unit and between 12-hour shifts of caring for sick and dying infants and a relationship unraveling: she is on the brink of something dark and disastrous. This is a short dark read that teeters on the edge of Horror in that we don't always know our limits until it's too late. I recommend this to anyone in the health care industry.
Happy reading, friends!

Fletcher, a 15-year-old blacksmiths apprentice, acquires a strange book from a traveling soldier. It contains instructions on summoning a demon from another world. Fletcher finds he is able to summon a salamander demon accidentally one night in a cemetery. His unusual power sends him to Vocans Academy where he will be trained as a battlemage. A war ravages the land, one between orcs and humankind. Every summoner the kingdom can find is on the fast track to the front lines. Fletcher meets many strange friends (and makes a few enemies) along the way. Loved this book! It reminds me a bit of Harry Potter if you mixed it with Pokémon. 10/10 would recommend!
