KEEC and Bike Week Coming Up!
From the Principal's Desk:
Dear Salisbury Families:
Certain weeks of the year just stand out, and the one coming up one of them for sure! This year KEEC and "Bike Week" happen at the same time. To be honest, this isn't totally ideal from my perspective, because it would be fun to have our 5th graders riding around with everyone else, but both KEEC and Local Motion (who provide the bike trailer) need to set their dates in response to a lot of things other than one small elementary school, so we understand, we roll with it, and we have a ton of fun no matter what! And we'll make sure 5th graders can do plenty of riding the following week, no doubt.
I wanted to use this space this week to share Bike Week logistics, and here they are:
If your child has a bike they would like to bring to school, please bring it on Monday (later is fine too, but they might miss some riding). At first we will park them on the racks (or near the racks) out front, but we will store them in our garage, which is locked and secure. Students will have a chance to ride during PE, recess, and any other times their classroom teachers decide to take them out.
You will notice that staff this week will not park in our parking lots, but instead along the entrance road. It's totally fine for parents to pull into the parking lot and park during drop-off, but we ask that visitors who come during the school day park where staff do, just in case a class goes out to ride.
The most important thing, however, is bike helmets: every student has to wear one while riding. If your child has a bike helmet, please have them bring it Monday. It is best if they are labelled, especially if your child is not used to their bike helmet and might forget it is theirs. If you have any bike helmets to lend to other kids for the week, please bring them in! We will label them so you do not lose them. It is ALWAYS helpful to have so extras, so we appreciate any extra ones that get brought in.
I will be at KEEC for most of the week, although I will come to school for a few meetings and "Walk-to-School Wednesday", so I may not respond to emails and the like as quickly as I normally try to, but I will try to stay up on all SCS business in a timely way.
A little less info in this week's newsletter (not a bad thing, last week's was probably too long), so enjoy reading, and have a great week!
Best,
Bjarki

Fun goings-on at SCS:
Thank you to FOSCS for Teacher Appreciation Week!
FOSCS is the BEST!
Friends of Salisbury Community School really outdid themselves this year for Teacher Appreciation Week! Kind notes, snacks, really cool SCS tote bags, coming in and covering lunch and recess on Wednesday so teachers and staff could enjoy a catered lunch together, and other things just let us know how much our parents and community appreciate our teachers and staff. Thank you so much for all you do, FOSCS!
Important News From SCS:
Literacy month: Author visits, Literacy Night, and a read-a-thon!
As described in the "Principal's Desk" section, we are going to have a whole month of celebrating literacy at Salisbury Community School. We have kicked off the Read-a-thon, where students find pledges that will sponsor their reading. The pledges usually are done by the minute (so 5 cents a minutes, for example, becomes $1.00 if the student reads for 20 minutes). The idea is to celebrate reading, to motivate students to read, to encourage communication about reading at home, all while raising funds for Friends of Salisbury Community School's (FOSCS) KEEC fund, an ongoing fund that FOSCS is starting that will help pay for KEEC in a sustainable way in the future. Pledge sheets and tracking forms went home last Friday, but let us know if we should send home more!
On Monday, May 6th, we were lucky enough to be joined by author Jan Reynolds, who has family ties to SCS and was gracious in her interest in coming and sharing her adventures, insights, and experiences with our students. Jan has had too many amazing experiences and honors to properly summarize here (but do check out here website for details!), except to say that she truly has been both a pioneer and a powerful force for good, particularly in her work highlighting cultures (especially threatened and vanishing ones) around the world. We were excited to welcome Jan to SCS.
And then, on Thursday, May 23rd (note the new date!) we will be holding Family Literacy Night.
Our featured guest this year is Matthew Dickerson.. Besides writing about hunting and fishing in the Addison Independent, Professor Dickerson (he also teaches at Middlebury College) writes for a wide variety of audiences and ages- including fiction and non-fiction. We are excited to have him come and share his experiences as an outdoorsperson and writer with our community members of all ages.
So please support the Read-a-thon, and consider coming to Family Literacy Night!
From Ms. T: Walk-To-School Wednesdays continue this week!
Walk to school Wednesdays back! During the month of May we are walking to school to reduce pollution and to encourage students to be active. This event is taking place on the Wednesdays of 5/8, 5/15, 5/22, and 5/29. During our event busses and drivers will drop students off at the intersection of Kelly Cross Road and Holman Road at the normal drop-off time of 7:30-7:40. SCS staff will wait for students and then we will all walk the remainder of the way to school as a large group. Participating in these events supports our school in receiving the Bike Trailer mid May where students will learn and practice how to bike safely!
Happy walking!

Dr. Rebecca Haslam brings Listening Circles to SCS:
On Wednesday Dr. Rebecca Eunmi Haslam came to listen to the perspective of SCS students as part of her confidential study called The Listening Circles Project
The goal of the Listening Circles Project is to hear directly from students and staff about what we can do to eliminate racial harm and ensure everyone feels safe and valued at school. Students, accompanied by several staff members, met with Dr. Haslam, and from all accounts had productive and thoughtful conversations.
As part of her work with secondary students and staff, Dr. Haslam is finalizing a report and recommendations for the ACSD administration. The elementary portion of this work will also result in a report and recommendations. We look forward to sharing the results with you when receive them!
Information about National Speech-Language Hearing Month!
May is National Speech-Language Hearing Month, a time to raise awareness about speech and language disorders and a time to help all students, no matter how they communicate, to feel included in their school community.
Please read the following letter from our ACSD Speech Language Counselors which contains important information and thinking points for parents and educators alike.

- Builds upon existing strengths
- Works on solutions with community partners
How to join the conversation:
- Please click to take the 10-minute online community survey: now available in 6 languages!
- Share this email with your friends and neighbors, aged 16 and older

ACSD and SCS' education around the eclipse is captured in the media!
Along with the excitement of the eclipse can the excitement of learning ABOUT the eclipse, and ACSD and SCS, particularly under the vision and leadership of teacher Amy Clapp, really embraced the eclipse as a wonderful opportunity to engage with science learning. We are VERY proud to share the following media stories about eclipse learning and ACSD. Amy's 3-4 class is heavily featured throughout.
