GHS Weekly Newsletter:

Week of January 13, 2025:
Parents of Freshmen and Juniors:
SIGNS OF SUICIDE Program:
January 14th and January 15th:
We will be participating in Signs of Suicide. The Signs of Suicide (SOS) program teaches students about mental health and how to seek help when they’re worried about themselves or a friend. SOS is one of the 4 suicide-prevention programs approved by the Ohio Department of Education, and it’s been used in thousands of schools over the past 20 years. Research studies have demonstrated that the SOS program effectively teaches students about depression and suicide while reducing students’ self-reported suicide attempts. In order to run the program, we will running a modified Warrior Up schedule in order to meet the requirements of the program.
Only FRESHMEN and JUNIORS will be participating. The other two grades will be using this time as an opportunity to complete missing work, an opportunity for grade checks, check emails, or as a study hall.
On January 14th, all counselors will be in Warrior Up FRESHMEN classes to facilitate the program.
On January 15th, counselors will be with JUNIORS in their Warrior Up classrooms. On those 2 days, we will be following the schedule below:
SOS- Warrior Up BELL: 7:30-8:10 am
Bell 1: 8:14-8:54 am
Bell 2: 8:58-9:38 am
Bell 3: 9:42-10:22 am
Bell 4: 10:26-11:06 am
Parents, if you would like your child to opt out of the program, please fill out this link and they will be pulled from the program and given an alternative place to complete missing work, an opportunity for grade checks, check emails, or as a study hall.
Now Available: 1st Semester/2nd Quarter Report Cards Viewable on Progressbook:
Report cards for 1st semester and 2nd quarter are now able to be viewed through your Progressbook account for your student(s). Please use the instructions below to access the most current report card at any time. Report cards at the end of each semester are the most important as you are able to see the full semester's worth of grades (1st quarter, 2nd quarter, and semester exam) as well as total credits earned for the semester. In order to earn credit for a class, students must have a FINAL semester grade, which is shown in the last column of the report card, of a "D" or higher. If the FINAL grade is a "F" then your student did not earn credit for this course and may be required to recover this credit during summer school. His/her school counselor will reach out to parents/guardians in May if summer school is required. In addition, the FINAL grade is also the grade that is reported on transcripts and what is used to calculate cumulative GPA. All students can access a copy of their unofficial transcript, which includes their cumulative GPA and grades for all courses taken during high school, via their SchooLinks accounts. These updated transcripts will be available in SchooLinks by mid-January which will allow students to view their updated GPA, class rank, and credit totals prior to making course selections for next school year during our scheduling process.

SENIOR IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
Financial Aid Information:
During our Warrior Up advisory bell on Wednesday, November 20th, seniors watched a presentation from our GHS guidance department to learn about financial aid. The presentation included an introduction to the FAFSA, the various types of financial aid, and information on how to access a large variety of scholarship opportunities. Students were also shown how to use SchooLinks, our College and Career Readiness program, to help manage this sometimes challenging process of finding ways to finance their after high school plans including college, career schools or training programs. The slideshow below was presented to students to help them begin understanding this important process. Please review the information in this slideshow with your senior student and reach out to Mrs. Mantz or Mrs. Royal, our GHS counselors, with any questions!
SENIORS: College Application Reminders:
Mrs. Mantz and Mrs. Royal wanted to send out a reminder about college applications as we have some quickly approaching deadlines. Although a large number of college applications are due by December 1st, there are some colleges, including The Ohio State, that have early action deadlines of November 1st. This means that if you are planning on applying to college and haven't started the process yet, it is definitely time to start NOW!
Below is the Applying to College 101 document that we have gone over with you all and sent out a few times. We have made some edits to the document and added in some additional helpful information and details including more links to video clips on using SchooLinks. We also added some information about financial aid, which we will cover in more detail in an upcoming Warrior Up bell. From our experience and through working with many of you so far this year, this program seems very user friendly and we feel strongly that using this program will be an easy part of your college application process!
Applying to College 101 - Steps and Information!
As always, please reach out to Mrs. Royal or Mrs. Mantz if you have any questions at all!
Please use the document linked below to view scholarship opportunities that students can take advantage of during senior year. The document has a complete list of local (Goshen students are the only applicants), regional (students from Clermont county/Greater Cincinnati can apply), and national (nationwide applicants plus scholarship search engines) scholarships for students to use. Each scholarship has a deadline listed, access and instructions for the application, and a description of the requirements and qualifications needed to apply. Please check this document WEEKLY as new scholarship opportunities are added throughout the school year!

Cell Phones: House Bill 250, which was signed into law by Governor DeWine, limits the use of cell phones and other wireless devices in our schools. Goshen Local Schools agrees with the research behind HB250 and with limiting the distractions that cell phone use creates for our students. With that in mind, below are the proposed changes to our cell phone practices and student handbook policies for the 2024-2025 school year, pending Board approval. Students are permitted to have cell phones on campus. Students are not permitted to use phones during class time or to take phones to the restroom. The expectation is for cell phones and wireless earbuds/headphones/AirPods to be put away and silenced in the classroom unless documented in IEP/504 or for documented health concerns. Students may access their devices before school, during lunch, and after school. To ensure compliance with these guidelines, the following consequences will be enforced:
Consequence for violating cellphone guidelines
1st offense (Classroom) - warning provided and parent contacted by teacher
2nd offense (Strike 1 in Office) - phone sent to office, parent contacted, and student can pick up phone from office at the end of the day
3rd offense (Strike 2 in Office) - phone sent to office, device must be picked up by the parent/guardian, and conversation is had about the repercussions if a student earns Strike 3.
4th offense (Strike 3 in Office) - phone sent to office, device must be picked up by the parent/guardian, and the device is not permitted to return to the school building for a designated amount of time up to and including the rest of the school year.
Chronic abuse of cell phone privileges will result in appropriate disciplinary measures up to and including suspension from school.
