HALO NOTES
St. Louis Catholic High School - Thurs. July 25, 2024
Words from Mr. Wyninger
“Faith and reason are like two wings on which the human spirit rises to the contemplation of truth” (John Paul II, Fides et Ratio).
I can remember my earlier years of teaching, especially during election years, and hearing my students talk about their favorite political candidate and their least favorite candidate, and wondering to myself, “Do they really believe these things, or is this just what they hear at home?”
It didn’t take much discussion to see that it was the latter rather than the former, which isn’t unique to political matters; it’s pretty consistent with all high school students no matter what the topic. Their truths are usually their parents’ truths... And rightly so!
Paragraph 2223 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church states clearly that “Parents have the first responsibility for the education of their children,” which is foundational especially as our high school students form their own identity as followers of Christ.
But in our crazy world, what are we doing to equip our young people so that they can think critically and objectively, especially about the truths that our Catholic Faith has to offer them?
With the pairing of our Theology classes and philosophy classes (Theology I/The Human Person, Theology II/Principles of Ethics, Theology III/Bioethics, and Theology IV or optional Dual Enrollment Religion 201/Philosophy 201), it is a great joy to see our students be presented with the truths of our Catholic faith, but also be given the tools to think them through, in the hopes that the faith that once belonged to their parents will now be their own. It is our hope that with a healthy balance of both faith (theology) and reason (philosophy), each and every one of our Saints will rise to the contemplation of Truth!

Back-to-School!
In transitioning to high school as a freshman or as a new St. Louis student, you might be wondering what items your student needs to bring on the first day of school. When starting high school we do not have the traditional school supply list that you had in K-8th grades, but once school starts your student's teachers will inform them of what items they will need during the year.
For the first day, make sure your child's backpack has a computer pocket or if the backpack does not have a padded pocket, get a computer sleeve for them to keep in their backpack. Students may bring a single notebook or loose leaf paper in case they want to take any notes and it is a good idea to have a few pencils or pens. Returning students will need to bring their computer charger with them to school.
We look forward to seeing all of our Saints on August 12!
