Reading Across RI 2019: What the Eyes Don't See
The Center for the Book and the Reading Across Rhode Island (RARI) committee have announced their 2019 selection: What the Eyes Don't See: A Story of Crisis, Resistance, and Hope in an American City by Mona Hanna-Attisha. This memoir follows Dr. Mona as she helps to uncover the water crisis in Flint, MI and brings that information to the public.
Tickets are available now for the Kickoff Event on Sunday, January 27 from 1 - 3 PM at the Pell Center for International Relations and Public Policy at Salve Regina University, which is the new home of the Center for the Book. This event will feature a preview performance by Living Literature and an expert panel moderated by Jim Ludes, Executive Director of the Pell Center. This year's RARI Honorary chair is Sheldon Whitehouse, who, in addition being a champion of the environment, led a landmark case against the makers of lead paint when he was RI's Attorney General.
If you would like to host a RARI discussion, contact Kate Lentz to reserve copies of the book!

Programs, Reading & Community Outreach
Netflix Original Program Streaming
Did you know that Netflix allows screenings of some of their original content for non-profit & library programming?
Many of their documentaries are available to non-profits to stream for free without even seeking permission; visit the Netflix Educational Screenings of Documentaries page for more information on that.
Also, if you visit the "Only on Netflix" Media Page, you can find information for how to contact Netflix about screening specific original content. One RI teen librarian was able to get permission for a no-charge showing of Netflix film Dumplin', for example, and it seems as though non-profits that are not charging admission are likely to be approved.
Cookbook Clubs & Anxiety Baking
Wow, Adult Services community! Your enthusiasm for and success with cookbook clubs is impressive. If you missed the discussion, you can read the thread over at the RI Adult Services Google Group. If you aren't a member of the group, now is a great time to join so you can connect with fellow adult services with your questions, concerns and successes.
A recent article in The Atlantic, "The Rise of Anxiety Baking," suggests that stressed Millennials may be seeking self-care through baking. This is nothing new - kitchen therapy and culinary therapy have been trendy for a few years, but if you are looking to add a new spin to your club or market to new audiences, cooking/baking as mindfulness and self-care may be an approach worth trying.
Meanwhile, consider bringing the info about Netflix streaming rights above to incorporate Netflix original programming to your Cookbook Club. From Cooked by Michael Pollan to Chef's Table to Great British Bake-off to Salt Fat Acid Heat, Netflix has an array of high-quality food-related original content that you might want to explore!

I’m Not a Lawyer or Doctor: Providing Patrons the Information They Need While Keeping Your Professional Integrity and Sanity
We all receive questions about medical and legal matters that go beyond our expertise and comfort level. However, we still want to help or point our patrons to the places where they can get the answers they need. And, that is where we often falter. This program aims to introduce law, special, academic, and public librarians to a variety of medical and legal research concepts and technologies available to best assist our patrons. By the end of this program, you will feel more confident in helping patrons to find the resources they need in order to successfully care for and represent themselves, find low/no cost legal aid, get second opinions and more information about personal health issues, while not putting yourself in legal or ethical dilemmas.

Adult Services Roundtable: Programming Favorites and Flops
Planning library programs for adults is an exciting but often unpredictable business! Join fellow adult services librarians to share some of your greatest hits and discuss what magic ingredients seem to go into your favorite, best-attended and most well-received programs. Acknowledging that we can learn as much from our failures as our successes, you are also encouraged to share a programming "flop" with the group so that we can use the collective wisdom of the group to imagine how that program might be reworked into a hit!
Please bring and be prepared to share a recent program that you felt was a great success as well a program that may have "flopped". If you would like your hit program shared on the Adult Services LibGuide, fill out the Program Model Template and email a link or attachment to nicolette.baffoni@olis.ri.gov

Adult Services Roundtable: Engaging Older Adults and their Caregivers Through Programs, Services and Partnerships
According to the 2016 RI Healthy Aging Data Report, the population of RI residents over the age of 65 is expected to rise to over 264,000 by 2040 - a 75% increase from 2010. Libraries already serve as vital centers of information, resources, and social opportunities & support for older adults and their caregivers, and as RI's population continues to age, these supports and programs will be more in demand than ever. This program will focus on library programs and services you are already providing for your aging populations and their caregivers, while also highlighting national and statewide resources, and potential community partners you may bring to this work. As part of this program, Tara Geraghty from Kindred Hospice will share about how libraries can work with her organization to educate the public on end-of-life decision making.
Please bring and be prepared to share any programs, partnerships, services or resources related to the topic that you have used/provided at your library.

This meeting will be an informal gathering at which you will have the opportunity to network and chat with other adult services librarians, share some food and plan for another great year of programs!
