North Texas Adapted Physical Education Conference: Virtual Webinar Series
Region 10 Education Service Center is proud to sponsor the 2020 North Texas Adapted P.E. Conference in partnership with Texas Woman's University. The APE Conference is designed for Adapted PE teachers and Consultants, Adapted PE service providers (PE Teachers, Special Education Teachers, Instructional Aides, Therapists who deliver APE services), Partner PE Teachers, and anyone interested in knowing more about Adapted P.E.
For in Region 10 area participants, there is no registration fee to attend. For out-of-Region 10 area participants, there is a registration fee of $150.00. Participants will only register one time to access all of the sessions.
Zoom links will be sent to those who complete the registration process for the conference.

"Renaissance of A.P.E.": Improving your Adapted Physical Education Program
Description: Adapted Physical Education is an industry of evolution. As practitioners it is imperative to be reflective in order to make changes. We are constantly reflecting and making changes in the district to address specific areas of need (e.g., caseload, providing appropriate service, addressing specific needs of students, etc.) and we want to share ways to improve your A.P.E. program to better serve students. Specifically outlining; creating new program options such as Aquatics, early screening, partnerships with local recreation centers for students leaving the public school system, and athletic opportunities including Unified Champion Schools.

Universal Design to Enhance, Boost, and Advocate for All Students
Description: This presentation will introduce the Lieberman-Brian Inclusion Rating
Scale (LIRSPE) for inclusion in PE. The scale is used to determine which variables are most challenging and/or supportive for effective programming. The session will 1) offer participants the opportunity to utilize the scale by scoring themselves and/or their programs, and 2)
provide an opportunity to strategize implementing UDL components (engagement, representation and expression) to "boost" and "arm" teachers with necessary instructional skills.

Using Technology to Challenge Autism with Exercise
Presenters: David S. Geslak, ACSM EP-C, CSCS & Amber Pantaleo, LBS1
Description: The gymnasium is the most un-sensory friendly environment for those with autism and related disabilities, often leaving them wandering and wondering. Creating success begins by understanding special education teaching strategies. You will learn evidence-based strategies to better support those with autism. By integrating technology, (ExerciseBuddy), establishing a structured routine, and learning to “break down” exercises you will leave with more confidence and protocols that can be immediately implemented in-person or remotely.
Learner Objectives:
Outline, define, and use the evidence-based teaching practices critical to helping those with autism engage in exercise.
Apply technology-aided instruction (ExerciseBuddy) in a hybrid learning model to meet the IDEA mandate for physical education for those with an IEP.
Demonstrate and instruct 5 exercises to teach to those with autism in PE/APE that can also be used as sensory breaks in the classroom.

Collaborative Teaming & Routines-Based Instruction

Description: Improving instruction for students with multiple impairments through inclusion of routines and a collaborative team approach while serving students both in-person and virtually. A routine is an instructional strategy developed to increase the level of participation in activities for students who require consistency and repetition in order to learn. Students with severe disabilities rarely do every step of a routine independently, but they are afforded the dignity of doing everything that they are cognitively and physically capable of doing. An important tool when working with MIVI students is collaborative consultation regarding activity routines. A well-written routine will incorporate aspects relating to all disciplines working with the child: occupational therapist, physical therapist, adapted PE teacher, speech therapist, teacher of the visually impaired, teacher of the auditorily impaired, classroom teacher, parent.

- Increase understanding of routines including the necessary components of a routine
- Strategies for implementing a collaborative team approach successfully with our MIVI students

Oaksteps to Fitness: Immersed fitness for the Autism population

Description: What percentage of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are overweight? With the prevalence of electronics, how many children with ASD are receiving the appropriate amount of daily exercise? Why do children with ASD have difficulty with motor planning? The Oaksteps to Fitness program is a collaborative effort between occupational therapists, personal trainers, and physical educators to respond to these questions and provide an avenue for children and young adults with ASD to engage in fitness in a safe, routine environment. This course will develop a beginning knowledge of autism spectrum disorder and learn how to better assist the community within the fitness setting. You will explore various exercises and stretches to implement into an immersive group exercises program. You will learn behavioral management techniques to enable greater success and participation in fitness for clients. You will be able to develop a fitness program specifically designed for the needs of individuals with autism spectrum disorder. This program applies easy-to-use fitness cards for an hour long circuit based training program that includes a warm-up, exercises, and cool down.
Learner Objectives:
- Develop knowledge of autism spectrum disorder and learn how to better assist the community within the fitness setting.
- Explore various exercises and stretches to implement into an immersive group exercises program.
- Learn behavioral management techniques to enable greater success and participation in fitness for clients
