The Connection Week 9 Term 3
Huapai District School 22nd September 2022
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
I saw this meme many years ago and it struck a chord with me. It was perfect timing as it was not long after seeing this that my daughter asked to do some baking. I took a deep breath, said yes, then kissed goodbye to anything resembling a tidy kitchen! I think it took her nearly three and a half hours to make the cake and ice it. I felt like I answered 140 questions and there was more chocolate batter around her face and on the bench than in the tin.* However, the learning that took place was incredible. Now she can whip up a better cake than I can and the frustration of those early attempts now mean that I no longer have to fill the biscuit tins each week for school lunches.
Learning is seldom neat and easy. Sometimes the best learning comes from struggle, frustration and pure hard work (and mess). Your children have had a huge term! We are so proud of the efforts they’ve put in. Perhaps they could learn to bake you a cake to celebrate the term….
*Knowing when to step in and support as an adult is also key for success so we shared the cleaning up duties as there were nearly tears of exhaustion by the end of the baking session (not just from my daughter!)

Student Of The Week
Ziyad (Year 6) says: “It’s the people at Huapai that make it the best school ever. People aren’t rude here. I love hanging out with my friends. They are funny and enjoyable. I like to walk and talk with them during break times. We have lots of jokes. If someone was thinking about coming to Huapai School, I would say “Do it and don’t be shy!”
Queen Elizabeth II Memorial Day - School Closed
Monday 26th September
Remembrance day for Queen Elizabeth II. This has been identified as a national holiday here in New Zealand. School will not be open on this day. The sports camp planned for that week will proceed.
Flag At Half Mast
You may have noticed that our school flag was flying at half mast. This was to commemorate the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. It was raised early on Wednesday morning in accordance with custom.
School Photos
This year, our school photos will be held on the very first day of term 4. We are aiming to have our class photos taken outside this year. Please ensure any uniform orders are made in the next couple weeks to ensure everyone is looking sharp with their collared school shirt and correct shorts / skorts for the photo. Please note that the school office is closed over the school holidays, so if you are making an order and need items for day 1 of term 4, you will need to have it delivered directly to your house. The cut-off to have items delivered to the school is Sunday 25th September.
IMPORTANT: If you require a sibling photo, please fill in the form below. Close off for registrations is Friday 14th October.
Breakfast Club - We Need Your Help
We urgently require volunteers to put their hand up to operate the breakfast club next term. Without personnel, we are unable to continue with breakfast club. The times needed are 8:30am-9am. Duties would involve ticking names off a register, serving weetbix and milk then tidying up / doing the dishes afterwards. If you are able to donate your time on any day of the week, please contact stephanie.wale@hds.school.nz before the end of this week.
Yummy Sticker Collection
This year we collected a total of just over 8,000 stickers! Thank you to everyone for your help in collecting these. We have now sent these off to the Yummy Head Office where they will be exchanged for credit to be used on purchasing sports gear for our school. We will keep you updated with what we get.
If you do still have some yummy stickers, please hold on to these as we will collect them again next year.
